This week for The Art Discourse Kyle and I were asked “How do multidisciplinary artists avoid being put in a box, but still manage to define their practice to others in a clear way?”
We get it, saying that you’re a multidisciplinary artist can sometimes feel lacking because it means that you do a lot of really cool things to create your work. In this episode Kyle and I talk about how we manage this dilemma in our own practice.

    👍 ABOUT ART DISCOURSE:
Over the past 12 years Kyle and I have amassed a large number of questions from artists. Literally we’re sitting on a 70+ page Google document full of them. We often used them when planning our guest lectures for universities and colleges, but as you all know we haven’t really been doing as many of those talks recently. Which is a bummer because it’s a part of our job we really love. Sharing information is a valuable part of what Spark Box is to us, so, with that in mind, we decided to create another series for RUclips - The Art Discourse! We’ve broken the questions down into six categories and each month we’ll roll a dice to find out what the focus of the month will be. Our first dice roll was “funding/pricing/applications”

This was a great question! I actually just discovered the term 'Multidisciplinary Artist' and felt an immense relief at its existence. Our culture has the tendency, especially with social media, to niche down people into definitive boxes. As someone who loves photography, illustration, graphic design, and ceramics - this is a perfect term that I think should be looked upon with pride 🌻✨🌈🙏😊

Couldn't agree more! That awesome that you are working in such a range of materials. The great thing is that each area supports and adds to the next. ⭐️

Yes! I also relate to this! I love painting, writing, and music. I have felt so much stress trying to pick just one field. And learning that I can create my own unique path is such a relief.

This may be helpful for somebody. I'm 35 years old and have been feeling psychologically stuck for a while now. I stopped producing creative work about six months ago to try to identify what's holding me back.
In the past, I've dabbled in a variety of creative activities, such as making music (vocals, guitar, production), photography (products, artists, live events, portraits), video production (music videos, short films), and graphic design (album covers, identities, promotional posters). I taught myself all of these skills and have earned money doing them, despite living in a conservative country like Turkey.
To try to solve my problem, I'm planning to create a personal project on RUclips that combines all my creative skills. This project needs many hours so firstly i'm going to post everything in my drives on instagram under the concept "My life's archive". I understand that not everyone will fully comprehend my pursuits, so I'm going to showcase my abilities and allow my audience to decide what they like. I hope this project will help me get unstuck and identify what direction I should take next.
My advice is do your own thing. Let them define you. This is the way humanity works i guess.

We can totally relate to wearing a lot of different creative hats and trying to find a path that best suits our creative interests. It sounds like finding an authentic space for sharing your journey and passions is a great stepping stone to reconnecting with what fulfills you. ✨😀✨

Can I grow on Instagram if I am multidisciplinary..for example I am a fine artist, illustrator and embroidery artist as well. I would like to keep a single account for all my work. Will that help me grow on Instagram or other social media?

Hi! This is the boat we are in - we run a business, create prints, create public art, create murals, etc. and all of it is shown under one IG account. If we're being honest we debate creating different accounts to showcase these different aspects of our practice because we're curious if that would benefit us overall. But, we also don't want to put more time and energy into social media when we really just want to be creating work and videos. For us growing slowly and staying connected online is our goal with social media and so far it's worked out really well. We don't have a huge following but we have a really engaged group of folks. If we wanted IG to earn us an influencer type income we would probably try breaking the different parts of our career up to see if that created a different type of traction but it isn't really why we're on social media so it hasn't felt worth the time investment to make that change. I guess it really depends on what your goals are with social media. Also what these different elements of your practice look and feel like (ie do they compliment each other or conflict). And do you have the capacity to manage multiple pages. It sounds like you are working primarily with visual arts. If they have similar themes, colours, styles you can definitely find a way to create a cohesive account that allows you to grow and showcase all of your work in one place.

@@sparkboxstudio Thanks for your response! I think what you say makes sense 😊 I am gonna keep a single account for now atleast and see where it goes.
