I was holding my breath when you maneuvered the pear tree branches, 💕 the bamboo trellises with toppers are a great idea , Laura from how’s it growing puts them on top of her Dahlia supports ,so cute and inexpensive
Erin, you cracked me up with, 'last year was a total pea bust, for me! We all have some gardening failures. In my case, quite a few, but it's the love of growing things that makes us keep on trying! I've been trying for almost 50 years now, and I still love the feeling of accomplishment when I can check things off my gardening to-do list! ~Margie
You know it just occurred to me that telling my husband “I had to buy this one, I found out the other thing won’t bloom unless I have this as well”....for everything I buy from now on is genius. I wonder how long I can get away with it 😂
I love peas and was always told plant by st Patrick’s day😊 and I usually miss that time completely every year... now I’ve got it marked on 2022s calendar and we’ll see it that even happens but sweet peas take first place for me love all you do Erin your yard and gardens are lovely...my house just sold in 10 hours and we are moving out of state to a new growing zone, and starting over at 67! I think I’ll go small with charm in my next garden adventure....I just want to say though as much as I’m happy about the move my heart is breaking to have to leave all the plantings behind🥲 I hope my buyer puts as much care and love into as I have through the years it’s like I’m leaving a piece of my heart behind You will be my JOY this summer and fall to watch 💜
Wow. I'm in the same boat. Moving at 65 and house sold quickly as well. While I'm still here I visit my plantings each morning. Feels a little silly sometimes, but they're kind of like old friends. Best of luck with new home! ✌🌞 Maybe cottage style will work at next place.
I really admire gardeners in the upper Midwest - Yáll go through so much to get a garden growing for a much shorter season than those of us in the south! (Remind me that I said this when we have 90% humidity in June, July and August!). Enjoy your channel Erin - and am now growing dahlias for the first time due to you! CC
New follower here after months of watching Garden Answer. I love that you are in Wisconsin too! It’s been so helpful knowing when to plant since you are just about an hour away.
Wow, your sweet-peas look so good. Mine are at a stage with the second sets of leaves just starting to show upon stems that are 4 to 5” high. This is the second time ever planting them. Hopefully I have something at the end. Your a great inspiration. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Last year I did nothing. Nothing in the garden. We locked down in March and everything was closed and I hadn't planned ahead and I had no seeds to plant. Plus I just couldn't get out there I had surgery and I sat on the sofa and binged watched shows. This year I planned and am making up for last year. Thanks for your videos and all your great info
We were told over 40 years ago to my a hole, then make a good sized ball of dirt ( approximately 12" in diameter and high) SPREAD THE ROOTS (that you have already soaked in liquid fertilized water ) OF THE PLANT OUT COVERING THIS IN THE GROUND NEW ROOT BALL, and fill the whole in with your dirt and compost, make a well around the plant and soak it. We had the most beautiful roses year after year, full and immensely fragrant and my neighbor loved seeing them as she looked out her kitchen window which was set kitty- corner to our yard and house. It was great advice and we've used it ever since
Always nice to see when people can plant their plants, I am still about a month from planting. So I am living vicariously through you right now. Also, I tried you way of sowing poppies and I have tons pf them popping up everywhere. Thanks so much for the tip I will be sowing them like this from now on. Happy planting!
Those clips are nifty. I've watched your tool collection video many times, it's great! My new favorite tool is my flat potting trowel. I got that idea from you and Monty Don 👍
Love the idea of putting the little pots at the top of your cane obelisk. I think Laura from How's it Growing does the same. I didn't realize how simple it is....
Same here. Last year I grew them indoors and they looked great. Once I transplanted them they suffered . So this year I pre-soaked them and into the garden soil they went. It’s been 2 weeks and no sign of life. 🤷🏻♀️ I thought by now I would plant a second crop but I guess not.
Thank you so much for sharing the way you make the sweet pea teepee! I have never grown sweet peas before and a friend gave me 6 pots of seedlings. I am in the south, so I am a little worried about how the plants will handle our hot summers. Such a cute idea! I love you videos.
Planting my sweet peas this week (Western MA). I'll have to put in a good two foot chicken wire fence around the to hopefully deter the chippies and rabbits. Great video!!!
Loving your channel, found you through wine and weeds with Laura, Love that segment! I am very interested in beautifying my veggie garden, absolutely love the chive hedge, keep it coming, I’m watching!
For those obelisks/tuteurs, the secret is to stick the bamboo sticks straight into the ground so they stand up straight and you have tension at the top.
I used older inoculant on my green beans and that did OK. Thanks for sharing the information. I hope your new pear is a great pollinator for the other pear and you get a nice expected harvest! Your vegetable garden is really attractive and will be productive!
I was just at TSC yesterday. Now I have to go back to get some of those clips. Much nicer looking that the stretchy green tape I've been using. LOVE the teepees with their little terra cotta hats.
Tree is so cute! Shape looks like it was begging to be espaliered! I wonder if coiling padded wire around the branch to bend like bonsai would work. Sweet pea trellis looks adorable, can’t wait to see them grow!
They look very cute, love that idea. Also thanks for mentioning Sweet Peas being heavy feeders, this is my first yr growing those. Really looking forward to seeing the Belgian espalier this yr. too.
I got about 3 weeks behind schedule about a month ago, but recently have gotten caught back up. I am greatly increasing the size of my vegetable garden and I'm planting a brand new 750 sq. Ft. cut flower garden, AND I have a lot of landscaping landscaping to do,, (we just bought our house) and I did NOT want to get behind and overwhelmed. Since I have a 2 year-old I knew that was a HUGE possibility!, so I spent all Winter planning out exactly what I'm going to plant, how many of each, exactly where it will go, when I will seed it, when I will transplant it, EVERYTHING! 😆 I started to get a Little bit behind because of all the time I was spending potting up. I started a lot of things in 128 cells because I thought that I would not have Room under my grow lights if I started things in 50 or 72 cells) But they needed potted up soooo quickly! So I got enough grow lights for 2 now shelves b/c I'd rather start them in larger cells & they be able to stay there longer. It takes me entirely too long to pot up into bigger size cell trays! But I finally got caught back up!
I know so many of the seeds this year suggested soaking the seeds first. A change in thought processes going on. My peas are doing quite well for doing this; well maybe, Those clips are awesome and have used them for several years. I did it with my apple tree.
We really like the Patterson onions as they store all winter! I usually plant my onions two inches apart and then thin them by using them as green onions or baby onions. Love your raised beds !😄
Sweet little pots, looks great! I haven’t tried a bareroot tree- bareroot rose, sure, but never a tree, definitely going to try that next Spring. Looking forward to updates on all the things!
I am so jealous of your garlic harvest! Mine never did come up. I dug down and only found a couple bulbs. We have a problem with moles. Wondering if they could have eaten my bulbs. Enjoy your garlic!! Enjoy your videos, Erin. Thanks for sharing.
I never soak my peas (I’m honestly worried I’d accidentally mush them flat when planting them), but I definitely always plant them with an innoculant. I don’t know if it’s my soil or what, but there’s just not enough myco for them to pull in enough N to get above 4” all by themselves. This has been the most satisfying pea related planting trick I’ve found and they’re so stinking happy that they seem to live longer than a usual season.
Guys. You're not going to believe it. I'm watching my garden show, & I'm thinking these old hips & back could use a strong young person to help me. So I head outside to battle the climbing rose, & hear a noise & look up to see TWO sturdy young boys shoving & arguing & pushing a lawnmower & carrying an edger. The oldest of the two says very politely, "Hello ma'am, would you like any yard help?" No kidding. Like someone was listening lol!! I just met two young enterprising, ambitious entrepreneurs.
Great idea with the Wakefield pots. I just got all of my sweet peas planted this weekend too, split between 8 bamboo trellis' (wish I would've thought of the pot idea!) lining my fence. I'm hoping to create a little bit of a privacy screen with my sweet peas. It does feel so good to start checking off those lists in the garden. :)
Wow, I was surprised when you said your tulips weren't blooming yet. I'm a zone behind you (4) and mine are up and blooming away. Such a strange, warm, dry spring were having. Most of the song birds are here early, too.
Great video! Looks like a good choice for a Pear tree. I just put in 5 bare root trees last weekend. So much easier to work with. This is my 2nd season trying out Jung. I have been very happy with their seeds and plants so far. So happy its Spring! :)
I love having some height in the garden. I too am using the pots for some whimsy. Have you ever had wasps or other critter make them their home? Your veggie pea story from last year was ripped from my experience last year too LOL Happy gardening.

After watching you for a while now I am beginning to think I NEED one of those little shovels you use! Can you share the information about the shovel you used to dig the hole for the tree please? I know you have shared it in previous videos, but am not sure if I can find it. Thank you!
Erin where do you get the root trainer seed starters for the sweet peas? I live in Canada, can I get them on Amazon? What are they called? I looked up root trainers and just got the regular seed starting pots showing up. Thanks Frances

I missed out on sweet peas this year. I soak them for 3 days, then nick them, then plant them in fall. They come up with the daffodils in early march. Already too hot here for them.
Wondering if the mulch will rot out the slip? I planted my slips too deep and they did not like it. I saw a tube video that said to "spoon" the onion - remove the dirt around the growing bulb. It helped the a lot! They look much happier and the bulbs are growing better.
I am organized & the weather isn’t cooperating. We had 5” of rain in 2 days last week now we’re having high winds for 4 days & tonight the rain coming back. I did sow zinnias, cleome, dill, amaranth, rocket & parsley. Several weeks ago. I only see maybe a dozen starts. 😳. So - if I weren’t organized, the weather would be perfect. I’m certain.
Just wondering towards the end of your video when you plant the peas, why did you plant the rose on an angle rather than straight across? Just asking for a beginner veggie gardener! My husband is currently building an elevated raised planter for our veggie garden. He just finished the smaller one for our herbs and I planted everything yesterday. Crossing my fingers!
I just like to get a little creative with my planting so planting them at an angle is me getting wild and crazy. It’s totally a personal preference especially when you planting in raised beds where rows aren’t really important like they can be for large in-ground planting.
It DEFINITELY takes just as much time to gather all the crap you need. Then you get all the way out there and you have to go back because you forgot something....the things we do....
I just love the casual feel of this video! going out to the veggie garden now!
You’re going to the veggie garden and I’m going to watch your latest video!! 😊
Clever idea putting the terra cotta pots at the tip of the bamboo trellis. I’m liking that look!
I was holding my breath when you maneuvered the pear tree branches, 💕 the bamboo trellises with toppers are a great idea , Laura from how’s it growing puts them on top of her Dahlia supports ,so cute and inexpensive
That pear branch bending was nail biting! Tough love, man.
I agree but I have never tried to do trees like that. I want to try it though. They look so pretty
Vampire dibber 😂 You’re Belgian fence is looking great!

Hi Erin you’re the best teacher ever! Now I know how to plant sweet pea from start to finish! Love this video! Thanks Erin for the inspiration!
Last year I had to duck tape two old bamboo canes together to make longer ones. The luxury of having 100 super long ones makes my jaw drop!
This space is going to be filled with so much yummy and beautiful things, I can’t wait to see it later in the season. 🤩
Love the trellises you made - easy peasy. No pun :)
You know it just occurred to me that telling my husband “I had to buy this one, I found out the other thing won’t bloom unless I have this as well”....for everything I buy from now on is genius. I wonder how long I can get away with it 😂

I soaked my sweet peas and snap peas both for the first time this year. It works really well and definitely recommend.
love that bamboo idea - looks so pretty and I'm all about trying to have things functional and pretty at the same time. thanks

I did the same thing, do to an illness, didn't get out in the garden until late June.
Very cute sweet pea trellis idea!!!!

“A pea bust” 😂 I can relate. Last year was just weird in so many ways, I also missed the window on planting some things.

Received someone those clips as a gift last year , I love them.

Great job Erin Can’t wait to see the sweet peas and great Idea on the ends of the bamboo poles😊❤️
Thank you for reminding me on the clay pot toppers. Wish you success on the pear tree. I will be looking into the forget about it.

I've been using those clips for several years now and love them more and more. You can also get them in a larger size, also. No fuss; no muss.
Never thought about putting clay pots on top of the bamboo for the trellis at first I thought it was a clippy you were using

I always learn and enjoy your videos🙂🧡
Love your garden!

They look very cute, love that idea. Also thanks for mentioning Sweet Peas being heavy feeders, this is my first yr growing those. Really looking forward to seeing the Belgian espalier this yr. too.
Planning to get in the Flower Beds today. Supposed to get to 80's today which is CRAZY for Iowa Zone 5 on May 1st. 😊

@@eileenmc8808 Yes I have 🤣
I have always soaked my peas over night before planting. I don't know if it actually helps but that is what my parents did so I do too.
I know so many of the seeds this year suggested soaking the seeds first. A change in thought processes going on. My peas are doing quite well for doing this; well maybe, Those clips are awesome and have used them for several years. I did it with my apple tree.
Love the pots🥰
Love those clips! Found them at my local TSC! also, I found and planted a Chicago Hardy Fig there, which I know you mentioned in a winter video!
Good point about going bare root as opposed to the heavy potted plants! I'm not even 50 anymore!
Love your attitude gardening is supposed to be enjoyable. Not oh crap I need to do this.
Same.. i have an early gold and a parker.... Blossoming at different times. Will look into ubeline.

I loved this video!!! Your relaxed attitude is so refreshing and so different from the competitiveness that is out there.
Great video and trellis! What is the length of your bamboo stakes?
BTW - great chat with Claus Dalby! Very enjoyable! 😊
Love the bamboo with the pots. So cute. Terri from Idaho🥔
I love your whimsical approach! 🌹
Great idea with the Wakefield pots. I just got all of my sweet peas planted this weekend too, split between 8 bamboo trellis' (wish I would've thought of the pot idea!) lining my fence. Wow, I was surprised when you said your tulips weren't blooming yet. I'm a zone behind you (4) and mine are up and blooming away. Such a strange, warm, dry spring were having. Most of the song birds are here early, too.
I overnight soaked and planted Cascadia snap peas also. They all sprouted quickly.

I love having some height in the garden. I too am using the pots for some whimsy. Have you ever had wasps or other critter make them their home?
Your veggie pea story from last year was ripped from my experience last year too LOL Happy gardening.
I never thought of that but I think that could definitely happen. The wasps loved making a home in our bell by the back door last year.
Where can someone buy Peter Jackson pots? Thank you for your videos!
We soaked our sugar snap peas before we planted in February. Still took forever for them to germinate.
I've never seen onions like that before, and I'm so intrigued. Where did you get them? Also (okay yes, I'm a newbie) I loved the tip of planting the onions around the garlic. I will definitely be doing that. I so appreciate you, love your sense of humor.

Where did you purchase the "root trainers" you called them, the sweet pea seedlings were in them....
Erin where do you get the root trainer seed starters for the sweet peas? I live in Canada, can I get them on Amazon? What are they called? I looked up root trainers and just got the regular seed starting pots showing up.
Thanks
Frances
Oh shoot, meant to put a link in. I did get them on Amazon. They have been sold out for awhile but I’ll include the link anyway because you might be able to find them elsewhere.
Love the bamboo pole trellises. What diameter pole do you use?
A new shovel to replace the last one that gave up the ghost? 😁
Did you paint or stain your raised beds? If you did, what did you use? Wanting to paint my raised beds.
I missed out on sweet peas this year. I soak them for 3 days, then nick them, then plant them in fall. They come up with the daffodils in early march. Already too hot here for them.
But my dahlias are humming right along !!!!!
Wondering if the mulch will rot out the slip? I planted my slips too deep and they did not like it. I saw a tube video that said to "spoon" the onion - remove the dirt around the growing bulb. It helped the a lot! They look much happier and the bulbs are growing better.
I am getting bare root seedling trees. Can I start them out in pots for like a year before putting them in the ground
