Changing Rear Brake Light Bulb/Lamp Hyundai Sonata 2011 And Newer
Changing Rear Brake Light Bulb/Lamp Hyundai Sonata Авто/Мото
Thanks for this video. It showed all the essential information without any rambling or wasted time. Great job on that, plus narrating clearly, and filming clearly. Exactly what i needed to know without any delay. Thanks again.
zanitzeuken Sorry I lost your comment. But you can use a pair of needle nosed pliers to pull the metal casings out. You may have to bend the edges to get a grip on them. Remember to push down and turn to remove them. Thanks.
Thank you for this video. I'm a single girl, and if I would have taken my car to the dealership, I'm sure I would have been seriously over charged.
+Neema Liggins You are most welcome. I am glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Same!!
Much love for anyone who can put up a tutorial that doesn't waste time and does exactly what it says, thanks!
Thank you so much for such a simplified instruction lesson. We just bought a new "used" 2016 and realized that one of the brake lights was out driving it home and were able to take care of this immediately!
You are most welcome. Glad I could help. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Dealership wanted to charge me 100 to do both of them. What a scam.
I can't thank you enough for all the times you've helped me out maintaining my 2011 Sonata, including this one. Your videos are the best!!
You are most welcome. I am so glad I could help you service it right. Thank you for watching and the kind comments.
Great video! It was super simple. You've now saved me twice from having to take my car in for service. Thanks!
You are most welcome. Thank your very much for commenting, watching and the kind words. All the best.
I really appreciate the video! They charge $55 at my local dealership for this and you did it in 2 minutes.
You are welcome. Wow! They really need to pay the bills at your dealership. Crazy price for changing bulbs. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary Lee mine wanted to charge me 100
Richard Lloyd thank you for the video. You saved me 100 dollars that the dealership wanted to charge me.
Thank you for this video. Total cost $6.99 and a trip to the parts store.
Thank you Richard you are the BEST!!!....I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata, I drive 60 miles a day, it's my first tail light that I change in this car......again you are the BEST !!!
You are most welcome. Thank you very much for watching and the kind comments.
Thank you!! I've never remotely fixed anything on a car myself until now. Big help.
+PD You are most welcome. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
You're video saved me time and a little frustration, I'm sure. Thank you, Richard.
You are most welcome. Glad I could help. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Thank you so much, saved time and money. Always been scared to mess with things on my car
Thanks for being so descriptive. your directions worked like a charm!!!!!!!!!!
You are most welcome. All the best.
Thanks RUclips dad. Saved me a lot of money
I love it when you find literally the perfect video on how to do something! I couldn't criticize this if I tried, thanks man!
Much thanks!
Wow. A maintenance job that's actually easier than I recall from cars from the Sixties and Seventies... no screwdriver required!
You are welcome. One of the many reasons I buy Hyundai vehicles.
Richard Lloyd Do you have any idea if the process is somewhat similar for say a 2007 Hyundai Sonata?
***** I don't own 2007 so I can't comment directly. The lens has changed significantly from 2007 to 2011 but the mechanics of the procedure have not. Take a look in your trunk they will probably come out the same way. Make sure you only take one out at a time and replace them with the same type of bulb. Thanks.
Very straight forward and easy to understand. Thank you!
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
fiddled with the pulling the bulb out, until I realized you had to actually turn and pull, not push. HA. but smooth sailing after that. thanks a bunch for the video.
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. All the best.
Thanks for this! Took me 2 minutes. Got two of them for $5.00.
You are most welcome. Glad I helped you save some $$$$. Thanks for watching.
Thank you 🙏🏽 You saves this single mom about 100 bucks ☺️

thank you so much. Happy new year!
+Brian Lee You are most welcome. Happy new year and thank you for watching.
Hi. Thanks for your video. Idk if I missed the part where you mentioned that the nub locks are different heights and you have to get the bulbs in on the right side, but for anyone struggling to get the bulb back in, yeah, um, there is a right side and a wrong side. Thanks!!
Thank you! Easy enough, I'll hit the auto supply store tomorrow.
You are welcome. Thank you for watching.
Super easy and fast. Thank you . It worked for my 2013 sonata
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
What website did u get the assembly brake Amazon or Ebay because my brake light on the driver side the lights bulb metal part had melted and dealership want to charger $220.00
Thank you! My dealer gave me an estimate that shows $94 to replace and install these bulbs. What a rip off! I'm heading out to do it myself.
+LadyofRoyalty You are welcome. Glad I could help you save some money. Thanks for watching.
Thanks ... could we use the same way with backlight ?
Thank you! Very helpful!
Richard Lloyd. I TOTALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP AND SUCH AN INFORMATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL VIDEO. You really helped save the day for me. I have subscribed to your channel and support you all the way my friend. Thank you again!!

I agree with other folks, thanks for the video and not a lot of fluff. Where it's located, which way turn it and folks should be off to the races. What I did was prop up my smart phone and recorded the bad bulb not working and new one working. Thanks
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Omg! It’s crazy how easy this is. My dealer was trying to charge me $50 including parts and labor. It’s shocking and so infuriating!!!!
Easy money if you can get it. LOL Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I am happy to know you get value from my content. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Richard, Thanks for all your teaching about sonata hyundai 2011
Qhestion do I have to do because my break light is not coming on when pressing the brak, I changed bolb for new one but still no lighting on the break filament.
Thanks a lot
You may have two bad bulbs. Test the bulbs by trying them in the other side. Is the car still under warranty?
This was super helpful thank youu
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
thank you! i changed my bulb for the first time, lol I feel happy that i didn't need to ask someone now realizing how easy this is

I ended up mashing up the silver metal casing for the bulb something fierce with pliers trying to get it out. I was able to get it out finally, and able to get the new bulb in OK. But getting the whole apparatus back in was still difficult.
Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Thank you saved me money
You're most welcome. Comments like this make my DAY! 😁️ I'm glad to know I could help you and that you got value from my work here. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Thanks for the video, next question is what to do if the bulb melted in place and can't be removed, can I just replace that little plastic part you remove the bulb from ?
You can buy the socket separately here at Amazon: amzn.to/2vvisHW or Ebay: goo.gl/pBaoyT Thanks.
Whats the reason why they melt in place? I keep getting this light dying on me due to one of the two connector points melting...
Thanks man.
I have the same issue with my 2012 sonata with the bulbs being stuck in the socket. Yes I pushed down and twisted both of the bulbs spun off without the metal piece budging. (Not a good project to start when it gets dark so early) After doing research there is supposedly a theory that the bulbs give off a high heat output that after some time they melt together with the plastic. An amazing theory but it literally feels as if they super glued the bulbs in there so idk what to believe. Now I have to disconnect the battery (safety) and pry out the metal pieces. Awesome videos though working on replacing most bulbs with leds.
You are most welcome. I have heard of people stating that they were melted in. If you have a hard time getting them out I have a video on how to take the whole lens out here: ruclips.net/video/DaWsinxh50s/видео.html Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. All the best.
Thank you!!
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Thank you sir!
You are welcome.
Thanks Richard, I tried another one and did not light up the break filament when pressing the break, unfortunately it is not under the warranty. There is any like fuse for these light bulb that I may check ?
Try one you know is working. Take the one out that is working on the other side and put it on the side that does not work. Here is a link to the service manual www.hsguide.net/rear_combination_lamp_repair_procedures-628.html.
Thanks for the video... Quick question: do i need to wear gloves to avoid finger prints on the bulb like halogen bulb?
The tail lights don't get as hot as the headlights so it's not an issue. I have never had a problem with the glass breaking on a tail light and I don't use gloves.
Richard Lloyd Thank you. Installed the bulb in 5 mins thanks to this video. Subscribed!
Sohail Ali You are welcome. Thanks for watching and the sub.
finally i found out what part number to buy now
Clay Davis Great! Thanks for watching.
i was able to change the bulb but im not able to reseat it back into its socket, any tips?
thank you
+Caramel S You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
How did you get the bulb out. I found the bulb in my wife's 2011 Hyundai Sonata to be bigger than the hole slot. I was able to get the bulb loosen but the plastic base would not fit back into the slot no matter how hard I push it or twist it. With the bulb not on contact I found out that you can not set the cruse control. Thank you for the video.
Mine as you saw in the video came out and went back in fairly easily, the trick and I may not have put it in the video, if it does not want to lock after you insert it, take it out of the socket and rotate it 180 degrees and reinsert the bulb and try it again. If you look at the bulb you will see two posts protruding from the sides, one of them is higher than the other and can only go in one way. Thank you for watching, commenting, the valuable feedback and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. I am happy to know I could help. All the best.👍😀
How do you take it out if the bulb is broken off and the metal is left in
I have a video on how remove the lens here: ruclips.net/video/DaWsinxh50s/видео.html this may help you get the material out. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
hey thanks for this
You are most welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hey Richard, I have a cracked light and I need to replace the whole passenger rear tail light assembly. Any chance you could upload a video or let me know how it comes off and goes back on? Thanks in advance!
I can do that for you. Hopefully I can shoot the video tomorrow. You actually have to take the assembly off to change one of the indicator lights. I will show you that as well. Thanks for asking
Here is the video you requested on removing and reinstalling the taillight assembly: ruclips.net/video/DaWsinxh50s/видео.html
Everywhere I go they tell me that the light buld is to big to take out of the hole. How do I get it out with out breaking it
Okay, so I unscrewed the bulb holder, got bulb out on both sides, replaced the bulbs, but when I go to put the bulb holder back in the slot, it will NOT go back in correctly, everything seems to line up, but its just not fitting in smoothly, I have them both back in now but they arent flush, will this be an issue? It doesnt seem like they will fall out, but they definitely arent in like they were originally
I am having this exact same issue in my 2011 Sonata on my right side break light. Did you ever find a solution? Right now mine is just duck taped but I'd love to fix it correctly and feel stupid taking it to a dealership.
How are those Sylvania long life bulbs you used for the brake lights? I am looking to buy the same ones but just want to make sure if they are good quality. Are they just as bright as the stock bulbs?
+Jenahaian Kamalanathan Yes they are still working and every bit as good as the originals in brightness. Thanks.
Not the same as a 2012 Hybrid. How do you do that?
Thanks for the video man, very helpful
You are welcome. I will be posting a video soon on replacing these lights with LED bulbs. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching.
I can not get the plastic assembly to screw back in. I have tried lining up the holes, pushing as hard as I can, and a hammer. Someone please help before I kill someone. You make it look so easy in the video.
Thanks so easy .
+Donetra Jones You are most welcome. Thanks for watching.
Help! There is an additional brake light that I can't figure out how to remove. Right underneath the turn signal light there is another bulb. When you are looking at the tail light, it lights up the lower corner. When you are inside the trunk and looking at the access, it is located in the lower left. (If on driver's side.) I was scared of breaking anything. Could you do a how-to on how to access that light?
pushing down but not twisting was same when I took other one out will it not work if not twisted
It does require to be twisted to lock it down and unlock it. Thanks.
Will LED bulbs work in place of the incandescent, and will I have to buy any special wiring kits for them?
The LED's will work for the brake lights (at least they did for me) See this video ruclips.net/video/zbn-Fk2Sed4/видео.html but the turn signals will require resistors to be installed as well to stop them from hyper flashing. Like these CUTEQUEEN TRADING 4pcs 50W 6Ohm LED Load Resistors for LED Turn Signal Lights or LED License Plate Lights At Amazon: amzn.to/2b8BtTc
have you done a video on changing out the center brake light? It looks to be difficult.
Bob Diamond No I have not done it but it does look involved to say the least. I found the service manual here www.hsguide.net/hyundai_sonata_yf_2011_year_service_manual-6.html and this is where they show you how to get at it. www.hsguide.net/high_mounted_stop_lamp_repair_procedures-627.html
Richard Lloyd Thanks for the info! The service manual information is a bit cryptic to say the least. It appears that you have to unplug the connector from inside the trunk, lay the rear seat backs down, remove the plastic trim piece holding the front edge of the package tray, remove the package tray (I am guessing it slides out after removing the trim piece) and then remove the center light assembly from the package tray. What do you think?
Richard Lloyd
I think I'm wrong about the connector. I have no idea where the connector is for the center brake light.
Bob Diamond They say you have to remove the rear seat but I don't see why? I think you have it right as far as the procedure. There really is only one way to find out. Get the screwdriver out. Tell us what you find. Thanks.
How do you change the mini bulbs (2) below the turn signal
Lori Rod Ohmart Here is a video I made on changing them to LED but the procedure is the same for the stock lights. Thanks ruclips.net/video/zbn-Fk2Sed4/видео.html
Are you secretly Norm McDonald?
I have been asked that before.... Thanks.
My rear passenger tail light that should be on when I turn my lights on doesn't light up, but when the brake is pressed, that same bulb lights up.... Do you know why that could be? Doesn't make sense to me that the bulb doesn't light up when lights are turned on, but does when brake is pressed. So I'm assuming it's not the bulb that's the problem? Please help, thank you!
+Shane Scott The brake light is a dual filament light. This means it is two lights in one bulb. One filament is the regular marker light (the one that turns on when you turn on your lights) and the brake light which is turn on when you apply your brakes. It sounds like the marker light filament in your bulb is burnt out but not the brake filament. Replacing the bulb should fix your problem. Here is the link to the bulb at Amazon: amzn.to/1ht6BZt thanks.
+Richard Lloyd Okay, that makes sense. Appreciate the help!
+Shane Scott You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
+Richard Lloyd thanks this comment answered my question above!
I just changed those but they both stay on constant. I know that they are the brake lights, I'm not contesting that, I'm wondering what is happening. If it's a fuse. They are acting as my running lights would. I got hit on the back right side but haven't had body work done yet. Turn signals work but no brake lights. I can't drive this for now.
I can only guess on this but I suspect you have a problem with your brake light switch. This is found "usually" under the dash near the brake pedal. I would have a trained professional "mechanic" have a look at it. Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
What is that Brown piece called that the light bulb goes into? Mine is broke so the light bulb will no longer twist in & stay into place. Do you happen to know where I have to go to get another one?
Elizabeth Anne Please note that the socket is key and will only hold the bulb when the bulb is inserted in the correct way. I show that on the video at the 1:19 mark. If it is really broken your local Hyundai dealership would be a place to get the socket. I believe they would have to sell you the whole wiring harness. If you are handy you can replace the socket it's self by getting it on Amazon amzn.to/1HkEXAL and using quick splice connectors amzn.to/1HkyPbD. You may have to break/cut one of the tabs on the new socket as I see the replacement sockets all have four tabs and the original Hyundai socket only has three. Thanks
okay so the bulb was not tightened all the way and fell into the red case do you by any chance know how to get the bulb back out?!?
+scarlett augafa Here is a video on how to take the tail light lens out you should be able to shake it out after that ruclips.net/video/DaWsinxh50s/видео.html
I’m having trouble getting the rear break light bulb back into the assembly.
Which assembly? Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Got the metal part stuck. Tried using pliers to twist it out and made it worse. Not it's stuck and bent on the metal part that holds the bulb 😔
Did you push down on it before you twisted it? Thanks.
I'm trying to change the bulb, but I think it's rusted or something. I don't want to put too much pressure on it and break the bulb. what should I do?
+Geekish If you think it's rusted I would try spraying the socket with WD-40 or some type of penetrating oil. Let it penetrate for 30 minutes and try it again. Remember to push down on the bulb and turn it counter clockwise and to be safe I would wear some work gloves or some type of hand protection in case the bulb breaks as you are twisting it. Thanks.
may sound like a stupid question, but is the break light and tail light the same thing? my tail light is out.
The brake light is also a tail light but there are many other "tail lights" on your car (turn signals, marker lights etc.)
+Richard Lloyd oh ok..well maybe you can point me In the right direction. I went to auto zone and to say the least they didn't really help me. I ended up buying the wrong bulb. I bought the 194 bulbs(which I did need) however it wasn't the right bulbs to fix the problem. heres the thing, my breaks lights work, my turning signals work..but my "parking lights" or the lights in the rear that stays on is not working. could it be that I just need to replace my break lights? I'm so confused sorry if I'm making this sound more complex than it actually is.
+Richard Lloyd and also, is the "marker light" the light that stays on? if so, is that different from the break light?
Get a friend and have them sit in the drivers seat then stand behind the car and have them test the brakes and turn signals. Also make sure that your headlights are on when when you are testing so that you can see all the parking and marker lights. BTW the brake lights are also parking/marker lights. They have a dual filament which means that one could burn out (marker or brake) and the other could function at the same time. Here are all my videos on these lights. ruclips.net/p/PLnxXRLSlmSVM1wqxT5-Ln8NbJLuAbmOGn And here are all my video's on the Sonata ruclips.net/p/PLnxXRLSlmSVOzAAWI72TisPeEQ2YJOr-V Thanks
+Richard Lloyd ok this makes sense! thank you so much for replying and your patience with my questions!
I installed the lights and they both work on my2013 sonata but now I can't get the grey piece back into the pocket lol.
+Bronya Samuel It only goes in one way. Make sure you have the tabs oriented in the correct fashion. Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd You may have the same problem I encountered -- the plastic housing of the tail light on both sides has melted! The tail lights burned out, fused to the housing, and appear to have melted the plastic where the socket inserts. No way to get it to go back in.
+Joe Rose Sorry to hear that. Did both parts melt (male and female socket) ? Sounds like a short of some type. Any idea why?
which one is the red one
Not sure what you are referring to. Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
so it doesnt matter if it the left or right brake light? my left one is out..
It's the same procedure on either side. Thanks.
Oh ok....my cousin just dropped the bulb inside..we are probably going to have to take the whole thing apart now.
He didnt have the bulb screwed all the way in....lol...I got the second bulb in.....a womans work is never done..lol
Thank you..helpful video...the dealer was going to charge 35.00 i spent 5 for 2 bulbs
Great! Here is a video I made showing you how to remove the lens if you need to recover the bulb ruclips.net/video/DaWsinxh50s/видео.html Thanks. All the best.
All you are the best!!
Can someone plzzz help when i untwisted the light bulb the metal peice got stuck..how do i get it out ?
+Khalea Saviour You can use a pair of needle nose pliers to get it out. Thanks.
what if it's both my break lights?
Replace them both. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Can I use 2057 instead of 2357?
I would use the manufacturers recommended bulb. Thanks.
anyone changed the 3rd brake light? trying to find the steps as it doesn't appear the bulb is accessible from the trunk
I no longer own the car or I would make a video on it. It is a bit more involved to do the change here is the instructions from the instruction manual www.hsguide.net/high_mounted_stop_lamp_repair_procedures-627.html Thanks
Awesome, thank you. the online manual is convenient. Saves me from pulling mine out of the car.
You are welcome. All the best.
Nice video, unfortunately in my house if it seems easy to do, then it will be impossible. I pushed the bulb in and turned it counter clockwise to remove the bulb from the socket and it won’t turn. I hate my car!! Why can’t things just go as planned for once? Just one time!! &$@#*!
I feel your pain Sir. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
My old light bulbs will not come out Its not Its stuck in there or something
+Shawn Presley Make sure you push down and turn it counter clockwise please wear protective gloves as the bulbs can break and the broken glass is sharp. Safety first. Thanks.
Shoot I didnt know I was supposed to turn the light bulb as well inside the socket.. Hopefully that will fix the bulb keep sliding out of the socket thats making my light turn off
You sound like Norm MacDonald lol
