+Culture Goblin That's pretty much how Carrie reacted while she was editing the video. ;) Hook-dissing is now a contentious issue within the Extra Credits team.
+Gamehatter Well. A hook is a curved object (usually metal) used to grab and pull something closer. Or in literature sense; the component to make the viewer interested. The movie, Hook, is a Robin Williams comedy about Peter Pan leaving neverland, growing up, and returning; to 1) save his kids; 2) remember that he is Peter Pan. Sort of as a ham-fisted metaphor for finding the child inside. It's named after Captain Hook, the arch-villain to Peter Pan, played by Dustin Hoffman
For the Call of Duty movie idea that he pitched, the movie Hardcore Henry is a great example of how great first person movies can be created. Just sayin.
The downside of such a movie type, is the overly used shaky camera "found footage" problem so many other movies have experienced. "Cloverfield" failed because it actually put people in the hospital with nausea and seizures. And that result is probably why no one has done such a thing with a war based video game.
Soldier4USA2005 better technology ,trick and technique might be able to solve that problem so yea it would be nice if theres more or some decent 1st person movie
Soldier4USA2005 well, Hardcore Henry isn't a found footage film. It's a first person movie so how about using the same techniques game developers use to avoid simulation sickness. Also, "put people in hospital with seizures" is a bit exaggerated. Nausea? Maybe, the same way VR and 3D films do it. Seizures? Well no.
+Thanatos2k Yea Heavy Rain was a FUCKING MASTER PIECE where in order to put in the great twist, the game just lies to you. WHAT A MASTER CRAFT. (this is sarcasm). ruclips.net/video/mOiINQczwZs/видео.html
You know how Nintendo has a mantra of always making a game center around one core mechanic? Essentially, the act of jumping is the theme of Mario; sucking up and spitting out stuff is the theme of Kirby, etc.Well, what if one took the mechanical themes of a game and adapted that into the story theme of a movie? For example, Mario is about jumping, and so it’s movie should be about jumping; both literal jumping technique and the mentality required in parkour, but also emotional jumping; “leaps of faith” so to speak. Mario has to grapple with his reservations, and learn to take risks and trust his abilities in order to save his friend from her ex.Another example being Halo CE, which is centered around the concept of a one-man-army who is truly alone against overwhelming death. So the movie is about him having to accept that he will never be normal, will never be part of a crowd, that for better or worse, he is The OP Badass, and he’ll have to forsake the army he so respects in order to do what needs to get done. Both cases more or less write themselves when viewed in this mindset.
+Aegix Drakan I thought the same thing when they mentioned movies based off board games and had freaking Battleship up there. Would have yelled at the monitor "WHAT ABOUT CLUE!" but then my office mates would have looked at me funny.
+Aegix Drakan Cluedo is a wonderful comedy detective film, yes. ...Just don't go near the British game show adaptation. Actually, do, it's a fascinating beast, just don't expect to enjoy what you see there. And speaking of board game movies - The film rights to Settlers of Catan have been acquired. No, I don't get it either.

Some games put a lot of focus on building a fictional universe, like the two big modern Bioware titles: Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Those universes may have been created for the games, but we can explore them in novels and movies as well because those settings are just so compelling. I don't think a Mass Effect movie following Shepard would be good, but I can easily imagine a movie series set in the Mass Effect universe.
Phlebas I know I’m late but imagine a movie based off the Krogan rebellions based off the Krogan viewpoint and the aftermath of the genophage being released
Valve have done great work with TF2's short films like Expiration Date. I sure as hell would love to watch a full length feature film made like those ones.
I'd say....a tf2 animated movie on MvM...or maybe a storyline from one team's perspective, made to be a fight throu many many sets of maps to reach Saxton, or Gray man, or whoever to solve any given problem.
I think the Mortal Kombat film, the first one, is the closest we've come to a great video game film. It's no oscar candidate, but it takes both the mythos and story of the MK games and the primary reasons anyone cares about them (karate fights with fantastical elements) and weaves them into a coherent and dramatically satisfying experience. Lots can be learned from how straightforward it is about its source material.
+Lurdiak Fortunately they only ever made one MK film, a very good MK film that knew exactly what it was. Two people beat the living snot out of each other until one of them isn't moving anymore. Add a very 90's soundtrack and very basic CG, hey presto you have recreated the early Mortal Kombat games in movie format, true to source material. Get out the popcorn and shout "FINISH HIM!"
+sanityismadness I'm just too curious about how it'll play out, honestly. XD Extra Credits' usually great audience VS the internet's self-perpetuating desire to devolve into flamwars. I'm bringing popcorn. I mean, the guy DOES know his movies, but... >_> There's a lot of other baggage that's liable to start a flamewar.
+Aegix Drakan He doesn't even say anything controversial in this video! You can agree with some things a person says without agreeing with ALL of them! But I guess that's too nuanced for the internet. I think Bob's thoughts on religion and politics are mostly bullshit, and I still love hearing his opinions on movies, games, and other media.
sanityismadness I honestly didn't mind him showing up in this video, honestly, as he DOES know his movies (and covered it pretty well in this video IMO, especially mentioning Clue). I'm just worried about how the rest of the comments brigade will react. As you said, the internet doesn't do nuance so well. And of course I know I can enjoy a person's work if I disagree with everything they say. I disagree with a lot of stuff Razorfist says, but I still find him hilarious as hell most of the time. That said, ever since Bob defended Other M, I've had a LOT of trouble taking him seriously when it comes to video game discussion. XD
+sanityismadness _NO HE AND I DISAGREE ABOUT SOMETHING I HAVE TO HATE HIM AND EVERYTHING HE EVER TOUCHES BECAUSE INTERNET_ But seriously, it''s kinda hilarious how many people can't handle something like that. "Welp, he had a hand in this very interesting and relevant video made by a team whose content I have regularly enjoyed, better skip this one, but not before insulting him in the comments."
I liked Hook! WTF do people think that was a bad movie? Also who is moviebob and is the Internet's hatred of him rational? Because usually when the internet gets angry its not rational and I can ignore.
+Warp Scanner He vocally reminds gamers that women are people. Back in 2014 that would REALLY piss a lot of people off, and since they are the sort of people who aren't productive members of society the same haters basically just spew hate over and over. Real sad waste.
And then five or six years later, Arcane was released and ended up being not just by far the best game adaption I've ever seen, but one of the absolute best works of fiction I've ever seen in any medium ever.
I swear; it seems like some people comment on RUclips videos just to say how much they don't like MovieBob. I'm reminded of Eleanor Roosevelt's quote: "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."
I'm not seeing comment after comment of "Bob has this idea, and I disagree with it because...." I'm seeing comment after comment of "I dislike Bob, so I'm not watching this video (but I am taking time out of my day to tell you I'm not watching it)". So............................. :P :P :P
+Robby Simpson You're right, I didn't. But I still gave them a click for content I didn't want. I don't care for Bob or his ideas, I would have much rather heard their opinions, even if they aren't experts. They've done it before.
Sweet! Moviebob's great on explaining the mechanics of film to us nerds who aren't necessarily film buffs. His old Big Picture history of Hollywood explains self-censorship and the Hays Code better than just about any source I've seen.
You can't really call detective Pikachu a video game movie since Pokemon has had many successful movies and TV series, pokemon is really more like a franchise which has video games than a video game which has movies.
@@SMon42 Detective Pikachu video game, released 02/2016. Pokemon animated series, 1997 Card game, 1996 I'm sure there are other content even before then but those dates are what I could easily find with three simple searches.
+Cool Ace Attorney really isn't a good example because the games were effectively "interactive anime" to begin with. All Takashi Miike really had to do was use the game as the script + storyboard and then cut out the parts that don't relate to the overarching plot. I literally cannot think of another game which would be easier to adapt, aside from other VNs. (Also, I'd say it was *good* but not truly *great.* Although that probably still puts it in the top-five game-->movie adaptations.)
I know this is probably referring to Hollywood adaptations, but I'm suprised there was no mention of Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. That's probably my favorite video game movie, since it told a story that felt in line with the games while not adapting them(it's even canon to the games),It had the same feel with many game staff working on it,and it's accessible both to newcomers to get them into the series, and old fans due to all the little Easter eggs. The Clue movie is awesome too,go watch that guys.
Well it's more because Professor Layton was made more like a movie adaption from the beginning. Layton is basically a mystery movie with every single conflict playing out as a puzzle.
There's another reason. Usually movies based on games are not that interested in being a stand-alone piece of art, but rather strive to exploit the audience of pre-existing fans purely for monetary profit. It's especially true the other way around, for games based on movies.
Oh, I agree, it has all sorts of flaws, I just personally love it lol. This was more of a toungue-in-cheek response I guess. Biased rose-tinted love for that movie :P
+Paradox Acres It CAN be limiting and headache inducing since there's no easy way to transition between scenes. It's part of the reason why the stories in CoD are ultimately pointless; transitioning from one blank character to another. There are exceptions to the POV rule, like Cloverfield and maybe The Blair Witch, but for action, I dunno. At least half the action will end up off-screen because POV can't cover it all without resorting to shaky cam.
dragonknightleader1 Exactly. Also, some of the BEST scenes in Movie history involve the *facial expressions* that actors make during intense or emotional scenes. Video games don't have to worry much about that (as it's _interactive_ in nature), but..can Movie Audiences actually care about a protagonist whose face is barely seen throughout a First Person Movie?
+0utta S1TE Yes, that _was_ a legitimately troubling tweet. But can you honestly say that MOST people don't feel that way deep down..? Food for thought, I guess. Personally, I think the _"No bad tactics"_ philosophy _sounds_ nice and "practical", but...not many people (Bob included) could actually go ahead with that because the *guilt* would destroy them. People _say_ that sorta thing a lot but it's only ever the sociopaths (small percentage of society) who actually go through with that way of doing things. But that's just my opinion. Also..yes, MovieBob is an _excellent_ Film Critic. Out of touch when it comes to Video Games, but very good when it comes to Movies :)
+0utta S1TE To be fair, this is what he said before that tweet: "I'm not sure how many ways I can explain that supporting a negative cause is STILL bad even if you're "nice" about it." Basically, 'weapons are weapons but pointing even the most mild of them at an innocent person is still wrong'.
+0utta S1TE As I said: many people talk the talk but they can't walk the walk. People like to talk tuff but they never go through with it because the guilt would destroy them.
i AM SO happy you brought up clue the movie, I watched it back in 2005 and ever since it stuck with me as a great movie in memory, they build the story in such a way all endings are possible and already explained while maintaining the appearance of flow
+Extra Credits I dunno, I loved wreck-it-ralph. not an exact video game movie, but one about them and it did pretty well! We also have a couple others coming out like ratchet & clank and sly cooper....oh yeah, and angry birds, but I got a feeling that was just a cash grab by hollywood... I'm definitely going to go see them all though (except angry birds) because even if they are just mediocre, it would be wonderful to see epic silver screen cinematics of our favorite games and not in-game engine cutscenes or a 4 minute intro/trailer/outro in the game, and if they do well, maybe more companies would be up for going for it. WHO KNOWS, maybe this will be the next big bang of movies like superheroes were!!
you guys forgot the mention the ratchet and clank movie coming out in April, that accualy has Devs from insomniac work in king with the movie studio to make the film
Game Theory is terrible, but they're not entirely wrong on that point. Specifically, Uwe Boll abuses government grants to pump out movies with cheap licenses for an amount of money disproportionate to the amount of effort involved.
"...and that's where I left him. To this day, he's probably still in that corner, agonizing over the impossible decision of which conformation of two mines those four little squares actually are... knowing in his gut that whichever way he picks, it's going to be wrong."
Maybe a movie on a soldier stuck in the middle of a minefield, trying to get out with only marking items with him...nothing that could help him to dig, resulting in him needing to try and get out to return to his platoon.
This might be a bit late but the TV show MASH actually did do a first person episode of a soldier being injured and then going through the mash unit from injury to recovery. It was a pretty good attempt
No idea who is Movie Bob and why so many people who post comments seem to hate him but I must say... DAMN. You guys managed to make me like the idea of something related to Call of Duty - never thought it could happen.
Moviebob is a former escapist employee who makes good movie reviews and analysis videos, decent gaming analysis videos, but has a reputation for being an ass on Twitter.
+Icicle Jr could you give some examples of his actions that contribute to his bad rep? I haven't heard of him and want to know what all the fuss is about :3
Well, Warcraft was acted out by nerds and you could tell. And the writing wasn't that great (honestly, the whole thing being CGI would've made it better. Like the opening cut scenes when you start up an expansion). But the AC movie was bad???!! D8"
never watched ac movie but warcraft was good but the only reason i SLIGHTLY knew what was going on was because i was a veteran player also late as frick again
Honestly, the Warcraft movie had no option but to suck for a majority of viewers. There's such an overwhelming amount of lore in the Warcraft universe, that there were only two major paths to take: explain things and bore the audience, or not explain and confuse the (casual) audience. :/
Hunter Kenchov Certainly, but that is a core part of the gaming experience. Its something that no game movie has attempted, let alone done as well as a film like EoT
The CoD idea sounds good on paper, but probably wouldn’t pan out well realistically considering the franchise’s established place in the military-entertainment complex. A more anti-war series like Metal Gear would probably work tho. Also Clue is a banging film.
MrRoMaGi I guess I can see that, since the movies have characters from the anime that aren't in the game, but still they're both in the pokemon universe that started with the games, and I think that should be enough to count as a video game movie
+Aman Miah Wreck it Ralph _was_ a nice love letter to video games (or rather arcade games), but it was not a movie _adaption_ of a video game. Like the Tomb Raider movies, and the Prince of Persia one. And of course the Super Mario Movie That Shall Not Be Named.
+Aman Miah I want to go with you on this one but the movie is not really about the video game itself, take away the rest of the arcane universe and a movie about the two guys from the game becomes much harder to make.
Extra Credits, I recently saw a trailer for Hardcore which is an action film from the first person perspective. I also watched an independent film exclusively done from the first person perspective as well. It's an incredible perspective, and that new camera rig enables this sort of immersion.
Arjac still thought it was worth pointing out. And first person really doesn't translate well to movies. In games it helps immersion, because you control the character and see from his perspective so it allows players to see the character as themselves. And it is also perfect for pointing guns and shooting. In movies though, it would mostly be distracting and may even make some people nauseous. Also we are passive viewers and we can't directly control that character so we don't get the immersion as if *I am on a battlefield*. It helps to illustrate what main character goes through, but we are also robbed of acting from our main character. For example. While it's not exactly the kind of movie he was talking about, I just have watched bridge of spies recently and it's on my mind. Imagine if you were to watch bridge of spies from first person? You would gain nothing because camera closely follows Tom Hanks throughout the movie and we are never shown something that he doesn't see in that scene, so we have a pretty clear idea of what exactly he is going through without first person. I would argue that first person would make it worse because we would be robbed of Tom Hanks's incredible performance and facial expressions. Again he was talking about a different kind of movie with that perspective, I am just telling why only very specific types of scenes would benefit from it, while the rest of the movie would suffer. Hardcore worked, because (this is gonna be pretty ironic) we basically see a perspective of video game character. I only seen YMS quickie about it, but from what I remember from his video and the trailer, we follow an indestructable cyborg silent protagonist who goes around beating shit out of everyone he sees. And it's awesome!
+jorgenhb I don't think that the opening 15 minutes of first-person+ 2 hours of ghosty floating = first-person movie. Ghost circumvents most of the problems. And while the movie was visually interesting, the fucking acting was terrible, it's way longer than it needed to be, goes on a philosophical diatribe for 5 minutes at the beginning that you're made to think will be important, but that the director has said is total bullshit without properly using the movie to satire it, uses sex for no reason other than BOOBIES! etc. Not a good example at all.
I love this. I'm an old gamer and software engineer so I appreciate your analysis on games and concepts. I'm trying to develop my first game, so these are helpful.
Hey EC crew! I just saw a scene in the movie The Brothers Grimsby that reminded me of this video! In it the agent/soldier puts in a contact lense, and the camera shifts to his perspective for a chase sequence. Quite fascinating and it looks to be the first step to something like your CoD idea. Have a good one!
'Why there are no good videogame movies?'. Oh, I don't know, probably because of a crazy movie director who invites critics into a boxing ground, simply because his films received negative critical reception?
For some reason, I absolutely love the image of the film reel and video game chilling out on a bench, watching the sunset over the ocean. Makes me laugh and have mild cases of the feels simultaneously. Dang interweb magic.
hey think you reached someone with that call of duty movie idea because now we got that hardcore henry coming out now thats is a pure first person veiw movie so i like to think you kind of inspired that
Ok, I have to ask, what's everybody in the comments section's deal with MovieBob? I'm only reading bits of stories. I watch some of his reviews and think some of his insights are quite interesting, so what gives?
Ah that'll be why I'm unaware then, I remember Gamergate being a huge, incomprehensible mess of rage and death threats and didn't even bother reading into it.
+CrispeeChips Believe it or not, they are still around, being a pointless movement that will inevitably die out. Which is a bit sad because a lot of people who describe themselves as such only really care about keeping backroom deals and censorship out of game reporting, though a majority of them are total assholes on the side.
no mention of Use Boll and those tax break loopholes that meant they didn't want the movies to do well? also isn't that an opinion, I liked Hitman, and Tomb Raider and Street Fighter the animated movie is awesome!
+Bob Dent Almost all the animated movies that were based on video games are great. Halo, Mass Effect and Resident Evil. However the live Hitman and Tom Raider were done right.
+Bob Dent I can certainly concur with that, but I forgive this video because it means that in a more general way, with the history of decisions made by top execs and so forth. Still I think it could have been much more in depth, but I liked this vid all the same.
+linkeffect82 true but he did a lot to cause problems, way more than most. most of the other company's that did bad movies often went through his company in some way..
Bryon Yamada movies yes... but saturday morning cartoons... *shudder* Zelda "well excuuuuse me, princess!" or the Mario one, the sonic one was not great either but the shining exception was Earth Worm Jim, that was an awesome cartoon. lol
Also, Sonic the Hedgehog oddly enough has been VERY successful in movies and TV shows. Sure, there's been a few bad ones, but there's been a surprising number of good ones.
Smart connection, its a good point that the video game generation is new, and then to relate it to how the super hero movies had to wait for the generation that was actually interested in order to make good movies. Gives me hope for future video game movies.
There have been some good movies. Wreck-it Ralph is a great example despite not being teathered to a specific game (though it's clearly Mario). A good, direct, example would be the third Pokemon movie; though that was more of a fluke in terms of quality. Also, if you think the Assassin's Creed movie will be actually good instead of a cash-in, I feel almost guarenteed in saying you're wrong.
+Snowthree I think when people mean "video game movie" they mean one produced by a major Hollywood studio with a budget to match and usually but not always live action. Wreck-it-Ralph doesn't truly count because its more of a commentary on being trapped in your own life, one that you might not have even asked for. Also the Pokemon movies are 90 minute episodes done to promote the games and series, not any different from any of the other thousand movies based on an already existing anime. Pokemon is probably the one out liar because it had a successful anime show. Still none of their movie's really "count" per say.
The trailer for Hardcore Henry played before watching this video. Absolutely perfect coupling. I was so intrigued by that even before watching through this.
+Christopher OBrien What are you bothered about? Even if it's the worst movie ever made, it can't do any more damage to the franchise than the past decade worth of games has already done.
I don't mind really im just worried about HOW are they gonna make the story like will it be serious and a little dark like in the classic and adventure series or will it be just a action comedy like in the recents?
+stevethepocket It's just... it will either pander to the fan fiction, or piss off the fan fiction into overdrive... and either one of those options is terrifying. Also Sonic was better when he didn't have a voice actor, and if you JUST have them talking, Zelda CDI was enough nightmare fuel for one lifetime of the universe.
There are a lot of questions, particularly rhetorical questions in this episode that I would love to see you follow up on. Heck, just pitching a few more ideas like that Call of Duty one would be fascinating.
You guys normally do great work, but this analysis is so deeply flawed that it should probably be re-approached. Hollywood already knew superhero movies could drive phenomenal revenue a decade before Batman hit in 1989. Why? Because Batman's Metropolis counterpart, Superman, had banked nearly a billion (in 2015 dollars, of course!) in revenue across 3 movies between 1978 and 1983. Outpacing the Iron Man and first X-Men trilogies and closing in on the Nolan Batmans and the first two Avengers. So, Hollywood knew the score before Burton came along. By 88, comic book movies were in a bad spot. The last movie to hit big was Superman III in 83. Superman IV had been savaged critically and financially in 87 and Howard the Duck had stank up theaters in 86. Warner wanted to revive the genre and get another bankable franchise to tent poll their summers. Enter Batman and Tim Burton. Where were Spider-Man and the Captain you may ask? Well, that's the part you're missing. Cont.
Making a movie from an extant intellectual property is all about who owns the option: the right to make a film. In the early 80s, Marvel sold the right to make films from their IPs to a bunch of small time randos. (Fun fact: there's a Yugoslavian produced Captain America movie that only saw theatrical release in the UK). Without the rights to make a Spider-Man or X-Men movie, the big studios could only make films from less popular characters, like Dick Tracy (which, incidentally, made over $200 mil). When rights reverted to Marvel in the early 90s, they made better decisions. I'd posit that Vidya poses an entirely different problem: video games are already a screen based medium and the ones that would make good movies (great world, story, characters, etc) essentially attempt to BE playable films. So the problem becomes one of translation. In other words, what does an adaptation of Mass Effect look like? Isn't it just the cut scenes sans interactivity?
+mdnickens01 I think the video has already implied that a possible answer is not to simply borrow plot and characters, but to bring over what makes the source material special, or uniquely good. For Mass Effect I don't think the story is that special... but people do love the crewmembers and interacting with them. Therefore my guess for a successful Mass Effect film would have a big focus on an ensemble cast and their relationships with each other - so, kind of like Serenity but with bigger plot stakes. In my opinion you wouldn't even need to make it about Reapers.
I just saw Kyle Kallgren's video "Gerry... Redux" from 2014, and it floored me how much of the same ground he covered, but especially because of how much he showed that elements had already cross pollinated.
I'm part of the very small percent who plays Call of Duty mainly or only for the story. Its been a long time since of been on multiplayer, but recently ive played through the MW series, still love it.
+Minngarm Halnhammer Actually so did I, at least for the first Black Ops which sort of went the reverse rout to this and paid homage to the Deer Hunter, the Manchurian Candidate, and Platoon.
Dogsled Shepherd I always found that to be a tad incongruous though, I mean the characters in the zombie part aren't professional soldiers, they're the usual ragtag group of survivors. That's not bad but if it's "Call of Duty: with zombies" shouldn't the setup be Soap or Mason fighting the undead?
Anthony Clay Well, bringing to the table is a new set of characters, with a change, plus it wouldn't fit with all the craziness that goes on, but that would be a cool thing, but I prefer the Nazi, Soviet, Japanese, American combo, good to see enemies and allies sorta getting along, makes for great potential and characters that can at least argue with each other, creating a contrast of ideas.
How about game companies releasing their own movies? I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone in thinking that most of the cut-scenes in a majority of popular games (StarCraft, HALO, etc) could make for great movies -- in and of themselves! Why not cut out the middle man (producers and their ilk) and do your own thing? We're already seeing Netflix take this idea and run with it when they started producing their own series for online consumption. What is there to stop a company like Blizzard or [insert name here] from doing something similar with their own IP? They've got the animators, programmers, and voice actors all on hand -- just extend those series of 2-5 minute clips into a real movie (call it in at 45 minutes to an hour, since as long as the story is coherent and the animation well done, most people don't care; longer movies are not necessarily better movies after all).
+Infinight Moon They also have a massive hand in making it too. They are also making it part of the canon for the AC story, so I'm curious to see how they do that. I'm excited for it.
+ObsidianWolf From a different entry point, yes. However, just because someone does something similar before doesn't mean that others can't do it again with a different perspective or twist.

The movie, Hook, is a Robin Williams comedy about Peter Pan leaving neverland, growing up, and returning; to 1) save his kids; 2) remember that he is Peter Pan. Sort of as a ham-fisted metaphor for finding the child inside.

It got a series. About how it was made.

GUYS DAN KNEW ABOUT THE SONIC MOVIE AND WAS TRYING TO WARN US.
Dear god
Mama Mia, I Heard There Were A Actually A Plan Of A Mario Game Movie Soon... And They Already Made Detective Pikachu, So Yeah....
Whelp, It's acctually not bad, so uhh...
I laughed so hard at that part
2:01 He saw Detective Pikachu coming, too!
Soldier4USA2005 better technology ,trick and technique might be able to solve that problem
so yea it would be nice if theres more or some decent 1st person movie
MeowAlien にゃあエイリアン
It's wasn't bad technology. It's was simply how they shook the camera for the "found footage" affect.
Lara Croft came for this comment.
Seizures? Well no.
"Stranger Things have happened"
Caleb Paul 😂😂The lego movie😂😂
they missed a good visual joke
Boi that one flew right over my head
Casey Paul Yeah... This didn’t age well. Lol
What are you talking about? There's already a good video game movie!
Metal Gear Solid 4.
*(ba dum tss)*
+GammaWALLE that's more like a movie video game
+GammaWALLE someone edited together all the cutscenes of MGS2, and it's actually a good movie. 4 hours long, though.
If they made medal gear solid 4 into a movie, then that would be a video game movie. Mgs 4 is just a movie.
+Thanatos2k Yea Heavy Rain was a FUCKING MASTER PIECE where in order to put in the great twist, the game just lies to you. WHAT A MASTER CRAFT. (this is sarcasm). ruclips.net/video/mOiINQczwZs/видео.html
first person Call of Duty = found footage Saving Private Ryan
+Yuzuru A i would watch the SHIT out of that.
The movie had a lot of first person perspective shots to begin with. Almost every combat scene had at least one.
+Nastrael Rowe Yeah, first person perspective is hardly unique to games.
+Yuzuru A modern day set 84 Charlie Mopic.
That would be the best thing since ambien.
Both cases more or less write themselves when viewed in this mindset.
mario: the movie. Luigi dies
Mind blowing. I like this concept.
I take it everyone is just quietly ignoring the Pokémon movies and the professor Layton movie
cfdj43 Pokemon movies are trash, and I didn’t even know they made layton movies.
The animated or real? Real is very bad.

Clue? a good movie?

@@sz_b_zstechnix7523 good point.
+Matthew Cool mini Siries
+Matthew Cool not a movie.
+Matthew Cool heh fair call. I was all of 12 when it came out so those rose tinted glasses put Elton John to shame ;)
Anime isn't film.
Oh crap, Moviebob? I'm staying the hell out of the comments on this one...
XD
+sanityismadness I was bracing myself for it honestly, but I was pleasantly surprised at how the discourse turned out. So hooray I suppose.
+sanityismadness _NO HE AND I DISAGREE ABOUT SOMETHING I HAVE TO HATE HIM AND EVERYTHING HE EVER TOUCHES BECAUSE INTERNET_

I liked Hook! WTF do people think that was a bad movie?
Also who is moviebob and is the Internet's hatred of him rational? Because usually when the internet gets angry its not rational and I can ignore.
+Warp Scanner OK so yeah Internet's hatred for him is due to dumb Internet drama, bruised egos, and factionalism.
I'm not seeing comment after comment of "Bob has this idea, and I disagree with it because...."
I'm seeing comment after comment of "I dislike Bob, so I'm not watching this video (but I am taking time out of my day to tell you I'm not watching it)".

No great video game movies?
Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva and the live action Ace Attorney calls bullshit.
You're right, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva is a great movie!
+Cool Let me rephrase this: No Great video game movies that were made outside Japan.
+Cool Oh my god! Thank you so much for being the reason that I now know of the existence of a live action Phoenix Wright film!
+Toonrick12 OBJECTION! An English dub of Eternal Diva was released in the US on November 8, 2011.
(Also, I'd say it was *good* but not truly *great.* Although that probably still puts it in the top-five game-->movie adaptations.)
every time I watch an episode I'm reminding how great this channel is. I love it so much. Thank you guys for all the hard work!
1:41
Hahahaha...ha...
*cries in the corner*
There's another reason. Usually movies based on games are not that interested in being a stand-alone piece of art, but rather strive to exploit the audience of pre-existing fans purely for monetary profit. It's especially true the other way around, for games based on movies.
Hey now, HOOK is a good movie! WTH?
side note: glad to see moviebob.
The movie was VERY poorly executed in my eyes. It's okay because of the cast and ideas but it turned out poor.
Oh, I agree, it has all sorts of flaws, I just personally love it lol. This was more of a toungue-in-cheek response I guess. Biased rose-tinted love for that movie :P
That is the fault of the audience for raising their expectations too high
that's... debatable.
1:43 "Yo, what is that?" Just a game movie adaptation that needed to be remaded because of Sonic's appearances and turned out to be great
Isn't the first person scene from the Doom film like, you know, really good?
It was alright, I guess.
Personally, I think the First Person Perspective doesn't work well for Films. But that's just me.
+Nathanial Dusk To me its the only good part of that movie but it is excellent.
+dragonknightleader1 Chronicle has a lot of good combat scenes without shaky cam. Plus the characters in CoD aren't blank because of PoV.
*Yay, MovieBob!*
(Sure, he's a wee bit out of touch when it comes to Video Games..but Movies? He's _amazing_ at that)
+0utta S1TE Yes, that _was_ a legitimately troubling tweet.
+0utta S1TE To be fair, this is what he said before that tweet: "I'm not sure how many ways I can explain that supporting a negative cause is STILL bad even if you're "nice" about it."
Basically, 'weapons are weapons but pointing even the most mild of them at an innocent person is still wrong'.
+0utta S1TE As I said: many people talk the talk but they can't walk the walk. People like to talk tuff but they never go through with it because the guilt would destroy them.
+0utta S1TE "If we remove all context this says something different than what it actually says, and that's worrying."
+0utta S1TE It's not wrong tho, burning everything to the ground is ok, if by everything you mean hitler.
i AM SO happy you brought up clue the movie, I watched it back in 2005 and ever since it stuck with me as a great movie in memory, they build the story in such a way all endings are possible and already explained while maintaining the appearance of flow
But seriously, though: why are there no good video game movies?

I'm definitely going to go see them all though (except angry birds) because even if they are just mediocre, it would be wonderful to see epic silver screen cinematics of our favorite games and not in-game engine cutscenes or a 4 minute intro/trailer/outro in the game, and if they do well, maybe more companies would be up for going for it. +Ridley some are but not most there where a few movies that where made in europe that are portentously bad
+Ridley They were mostly talking about Uwe Boll, who hates humanity.
Pattyobrien3
You are correct, which is why I say he hates humanity. Also, he also loves getting into boxing matches with film critics.
Game Theory is terrible, but they're not entirely wrong on that point. Specifically, Uwe Boll abuses government grants to pump out movies with cheap licenses for an amount of money disproportionate to the amount of effort involved.
I wanna see Minesweeper the movie.

"...and that's where I left him. To this day, he's probably still in that corner, agonizing over the impossible decision of which conformation of two mines those four little squares actually are... knowing in his gut that whichever way he picks, it's going to be wrong."

The Hurt Locker
Maybe a movie on a soldier stuck in the middle of a minefield, trying to get out with only marking items with him...nothing that could help him to dig, resulting in him needing to try and get out to return to his platoon.
This might be a bit late but the TV show MASH actually did do a first person episode of a soldier being injured and then going through the mash unit from injury to recovery. It was a pretty good attempt

anddddd...warcraft and ac movie sucked
Well, Warcraft was acted out by nerds and you could tell. And the writing wasn't that great (honestly, the whole thing being CGI would've made it better. Like the opening cut scenes when you start up an expansion).
But the AC movie was bad???!! D8"
MythicGirl2210 actually i saw the ratings of AC i throught it was bad but when i watched i was amazed how good it was

i thought warcraft was ok but ac was imo really boring. they stayed way too much time in the present day
never watched ac movie but warcraft was good but the only reason i SLIGHTLY knew what was going on was because i was a veteran player
also late as frick again
Honestly, the Warcraft movie had no option but to suck for a majority of viewers. There's such an overwhelming amount of lore in the Warcraft universe, that there were only two major paths to take: explain things and bore the audience, or not explain and confuse the (casual) audience. :/
The part about Clue was brilliant. Never quite thought about it that way, but you're totally right.
"Moviebob"

+LittleNorwegians Uwe Boll, we're all done.
Edge of Tomorrow is probably the best video game movie that isn't based on a particular franchise.
ck Tam
Should clarify then. An existing video game franchise.
Hunter Kenchov
Should clarify then. An existing video game franchise. Sorry for the confusion.
Edge of Tomorrow IS based off of something. It's based off of the Japanese light novel "All You Need is Kill."
+Thisshitisfuckedup Yup. It recreates the repetition and improvement aspects of a video game more closely than any film based on a video game property
"why are there no good video game movies?" yo have you ever seen a pokemon movie?
We mean good video game movie.
+danerang Those movies are based on the anime side of Pokemon, so i don't think it's right to call them video game movies.
MrRoMaGi but the anime is based off the game isn't it? so, in turn, the movies are also based off of the game
danerang Yeah, but it feels...indirect?
If that makes sense?
MrRoMaGi I guess I can see that, since the movies have characters from the anime that aren't in the game, but still they're both in the pokemon universe that started with the games, and I think that should be enough to count as a video game movie
what about Wreck it Ralph? That was a great video game movie.
+Aman Miah Not... really? The games were created because of the movie, rather than the other way around...
+Aman Miah more of a movie based around games.
+Raizin Oh yeah! I completely forgot the Prince of Persia movie. That was actually really good.
There is already a first person movie called "hardcore".
The name is appropriate...
+Leonid Chernyshov yes, but A) it isn't out yet IIRC and B) it's a very different movie from what they're suggesting
+Leonid Chernyshov Actually, they recently changed the name to "Hardcore Harry."
+Aurum Pyrrhon Hardcore Henry, but it's an honest mistake.
Sonic movie: Imma ruin this video whole career
I love this. I'm an old gamer and software engineer so I appreciate your analysis on games and concepts. I'm trying to develop my first game, so these are helpful.
KittenKoder Keep going.
Regardless, 1994's "The Shadow" was the shit. I adore that movie.
EC: There are no good video game movies
Detective Pikachu: Am I a joke to you?
Hey EC crew! I just saw a scene in the movie The Brothers Grimsby that reminded me of this video! In it the agent/soldier puts in a contact lense, and the camera shifts to his perspective for a chase sequence. Quite fascinating and it looks to be the first step to something like your CoD idea. Have a good one!
'Why there are no good videogame movies?'. Oh, I don't know, probably because of a crazy movie director who invites critics into a boxing ground, simply because his films received negative critical reception?
Isn't Movie Bob that guy who has no idea why relevant characters are getting Amiibos as opposed to his obscure favorites?
For some reason, I absolutely love the image of the film reel and video game chilling out on a bench, watching the sunset over the ocean. Makes me laugh and have mild cases of the feels simultaneously. Dang interweb magic.
Wreck-It Ralph may have been a mediocre (at best) game, but they made a darn good movie about it.
hey think you reached someone with that call of duty movie idea because now we got that hardcore henry coming out now thats is a pure first person veiw movie so i like to think you kind of inspired that
I have seen many videos on this subject but I think you did it best.
Ok, I have to ask, what's everybody in the comments section's deal with MovieBob? I'm only reading bits of stories. I watch some of his reviews and think some of his insights are quite interesting, so what gives?
+CrispeeChips simplest answer: he got on the bad side of GamerGaters, the internet-equivalent of the Tea Party.

*Uwe Boll
*shudder* Zelda "well excuuuuse me, princess!" or the Mario one, the sonic one was not great either but the shining exception was Earth Worm Jim, that was an awesome cartoon. lol
Hi there-
I work as a game localizer in Japan, and I would LOVE to see a video on localization. Always love your stuff!
ayyy moviebob! good to see a colab
How does Detective Pikachu reflects to these days?
4 years later there's Pokemon Detective Pikachu and the sonic movie. (With Sonic 2 coming in 2021)
Also, Sonic the Hedgehog oddly enough has been VERY successful in movies and TV shows. Sure, there's been a few bad ones, but there's been a surprising number of good ones.
Sonic X was good
2 years later...
0:52 HOOK WAS GREAT!
Blizzard needs to make an overwatch movie
Imran Shitta-Bey Heck! They should make a TV series. They definitely have the resources.
Imran Shitta-Bey no.
@@Blorxian-hater yes. But only if they learned their mistakes from Warcraft and what other decent movies like Sonic and DP got right.
That COD movie you described... I would watch that. and I've never played COD!
what about why there is no good movie video game?
I want a live action fallout 1 tv show
I think the only not bad, not good, but not bad, video game movie I’ve ever seen was the Hitman 2007 movie, but it was REALLY forgettable.
Wreck-It-Ralph must count for something
spiderman 2 on the ps2
okay, goodbye
(͠≖ ͜ʖ͠≖)BecauseICan( ͡º ͜ʖ ͡º) or fricken spider man3 on ps3
Dat font tho
The trailer for Hardcore Henry played before watching this video. Absolutely perfect coupling. I was so intrigued by that even before watching through this.
And there is going to be a sonic movie
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
+Hexidecimark Hence, total terror at just the thought of a movie
Metal Gear Solid movie c:
+XxFLORESxX Movie of a movie? Redundant much?
+Bendthedick Cuminbitch its a game tho
+XxFLORESxX There's a bunch of them by a guy called Kojima.
+XxFLORESxX HAHAHA, imagine the length of that one, considering the cutscenes in the games.
+nosedigger Thinking about it again though, I realize you'd kinda need to go all-in with the CGI characters.
At least the Professor Layton and Animal Crossing movies are still great.
Yep, and it's actually really good.
I don't think Japanese animated movies count.
I just saw Kyle Kallgren's video "Gerry... Redux" from 2014, and it floored me how much of the same ground he covered, but especially because of how much he showed that elements had already cross pollinated.
Did someone say Detective Pikachu?
moviebob? done with the video
+Kat Reynolds lol hes not even in the video.
anything that um actuallying clown touches is not worth reading/listening to
k.
I'm part of the very small percent who plays Call of Duty mainly or only for the story. Its been a long time since of been on multiplayer, but recently ive played through the MW series, still love it.
1:41 You guys are prophets, they are actually making that now.
גיל דרוז'ץ yes
I only liked CoD for the campaign....
+Minngarm Halnhammer Actually so did I, at least for the first Black Ops which sort of went the reverse rout to this and paid homage to the Deer Hunter, the Manchurian Candidate, and Platoon.
Anthony Clay IMO CoD has a rather poor multiplayer for a FPS but it is a console game.
I liked COD for the zombie story line... the ORIGINAL one
"Flames! Flames on the side of my face!!"
Clue....such a deep cut.
One thing that gives me some amount of hope for the Assassin's Creed movie is that Ubisoft started their own studio for it.
+Infinight Moon They also have a massive hand in making it too. They are also making it part of the canon for the AC story, so I'm curious to see how they do that. I'm excited for it.
didn't Matpat already MAKE this video?
Pretty sure mat pat isn't the first person to make a video related to the topic. This has been questioned for a long time
+ObsidianWolf From a different entry point, yes. However, just because someone does something similar before doesn't mean that others can't do it again with a different perspective or twist.
I'm not sure that he counts as a person?
