Chocolate Babka Recipe | The Great Barry Bake Off

- A babka is a braided loaf recipe that was recently on the Great British Bake Off... and as i've been attempting a few recipes recently Mrs Barry put this right to the top of the list - and it's quite a fun challenge! Braiding the dough was tricky, but the taste, particularly with the homemade roasted hazelnuts and chocolate spread, was out of this World! It did not last long! I'm not sure how accurate this is to an authentic Babka, but I enjoyed taking on the challenge...Good luck if you try it :)

I come from a Polish family and a Polish church community. My grandmother would make dozens and dozens of babka, not all chocolate though chocolate is my favorite. All year long everyone in the family (and close friends) would save their coffee cans to use for baking. Thanks for the memories of my Nana today! 💖💖💖
Greeting from Poland! Babka is a well known cake here and we make it mostly for Easter!
I followed the exact same recipe as Barry over the weekend. His looked better than mine (I didn't let the chocolate sauce cool enough and it ran everywhere when I cut) and I cannot recommend this enough. The taste of the soft gooey bread with the rich chocolate sauce in the middle but then crunchy on the outside, it was sublime. My family polished the entire thing off in 2 days and I'm the only one of us who really likes chocolate. Next weekend I'm going to try a baked apple, cinnamon and raisin version.
Let me know how that works out. I love to make one but have the same issue with being the only one in the household who eats chocolate.
As a Pole, I have seen this done with a variety of fillings and it's always gorgeous. Apple/cinnamon/caramel works nice. In the north-eastern region we often do this with poppy seed filling. Although I gotta say, watching this makes me crave nutella...

@@ConjuredUndead lol no, a Pole is an actual English word for Polish people but we also support all athletes who dance on the other kind of poles- apparently it takes a lot of strength and craft so good for them! ;)

I love when people make Jewish food on RUclips too! All your food looks delicious and there aren't that many Jewish people in the uk (at least in my area) it seems in comparison to the us so there aren't really any places I can buy it so it's great to see recipes.

I'm a Jewish American. I'm always surprised to see people not know what Babka is but I'm glad you loved it! It's really the best! There's a whole Seinfeld episode about it.
They sell them in normal supermarkets in Russia and Ukraine. The poppy seed ones are good too :)
Hi how are you? My name is Noy and I am from Israel. I really like your videos and was very excited to see this cake. The truth is that in Israel we call it yeast cake.
This is the cake we make at home almost every week for Shabbat. But we make it a little different, before rolling we let the dough double in volume and then roll it out and put on a spread (next time I recommend putting Nutella, kinder fingers, and Oreo very naughty 🤭) Roll and before we cut the cake we give it 10 min in the freezer to make it easier to cut and the shape to be clearer.
As for the sugar syrup, next time try to put more syrup because the cake the next day dries out and the sugar syrup should get into the cake as well.
More than that there are full of stunning shapes that can be made with the dough and put into the mold, my favorite is to cut into circles and arrange them in the mold when the side of the chocolate is turned upside down. Hope i helped loveee your video’s!!!!!!!!
i'm pretty sure a couple of years ago they tackled clangers, a sort of pastry thing that has a savoury filling one side and a sweet filling the other... that might be fun

Aside from the filling this dough and method are similar to how I make Swedish cinnamon buns. Might have to try that in the bread pan this way, could be epic!
Bubka is great! My grandma made the best Babka. We also eat an even better version called rugaleh, which is like tiny versions. You should try it!

Id recommend covering your board with clean film before hand colouring dough/fontant/ready to roll icing as ive stain loads of boards
Also don't put it on your parents counter. It will stain and they won't be happy. I learned this as a child the first time I worked with food colouring.

How old are the pugs? The coolness maybe making her ache. My older boston terrier ached when he got older. There is cbd for dogs. It helps so very much in older dogs. Its soothing to their joints. There is also supplements you can be to alao help her not to loose the stuff in her joints to keep her more comfortable as she ages. This looks So good!!
Prinsesstårta! Swedish princess cake! They tried it on TGBB a while back, and as a Swede it's one of my alltime favourite cakes. Marzipan, vanilla custard, jam and a ton of whipped cream.
My hubby had to make puff pastry from scratch last year for our potluck Thanksgiving dinner. We legit forgot to buy it when we did our normal grocery shopping the week before, so the night before Thanksgiving he ran to the store to try and get some. But they were completely sold out. So he went with his only other option and made it from scratch.
It took hours, and he messed up a couple times, but at the end, he got what he needed, and the sausage rolls it was made for were devoured by the entire family the next day. Now they beg for them any time we get together lol

For getting food dye off ur hands try dawn dish soap. I have a 5y/o and she got into the food dye after we made playdo cuz she wanted to change the color. Got it all over herself, the fridge, the hand towel, and the counter. Dawn worked a dream at getting it off most everything. Took a few washes but it cut thru

Oh Barry! You rolled it the wrong way! I thought Mrs. B caught you but you just used the opposite side which was long as well! You roll up the shorter side and it will fit the pan and it will puff up over the top and be big and fluffy... for the next time Mrs. B has a craving lol! Still tastes amazing either way...

Barry, you should definitely make your own puff pastry if you have the time. It's actually very easy to make, it just takes a while for it to come together.

You should have Mrs B give you a "technical challenge" where just like the contestants you get all the measurements, but a very simplified recipe with directions like "make the dough" or "let rise" or "bake, until golden" (no time or temp). Then at the end she could give you the full recipe after to compare.
While not a bakeoff recipe. Would love to see you try your hand on Tula Gingerbread. It's miles above your average gingerbread recipe.

Not an authentic recipe but glad to see you trying it! Jews (in the UK) tend to pronounce it as “bubka”.

Barry please do homemade puff pastry as i tried once and failed at miserably. Its considered tough and tedious and temperamental( three ts) because of the butter layering
cinnamon > chocolate when comes to babka is what I heard. also after you have cut it in half if you put it in the freezer for 15min the braiding will be easier
