    I love the color scheme. It's vibrant. I grew up with these cards. It's such a shame that Topps didn't put many good guys in here. The 89 draft had Bagwell, Klesko, Mo Vaughan, & Thome. They doubled up on Avery rookie cards, they should've threw in The Big Hurt there too.

    Because I'm an avid Cleveland Indians collector, I like this set because of the Justice, Fryman and Baerga rookies and Sandy Alomar Jr.'s first Indians card.

    These cards may not be worth much, but man do they bring me back to collecting! I used to have a lot of these, because they were affordable! I no longer have them. Long story, but that's why I quit collecting, so it's nice to see them! Nostalgia.

    My favorite worst sets
    1989 Score
    1981 Donruss
    1988 Donruss (virtually IMPOSSIBLE to find perfectly centered cards)
    1992 Fleer (oh God, so much yellow!!)
    And #1.....1990 ProSet anything. Any sport. Hockey, football, anything. They cranked out so much junk wax (remember all the Bill and Ted excellent adventure sets?) that you could keep your house warm all winter by using it all in your fireplace and still have enough for the next decade.

      @davidjury79 5 лет назад +1

      In fairness, Olerud might seriously be the most underrated player of the last 30 years. High AVG/OBP hitter and an excellent fielder; just didn't have the HR power people expect from a first baseman (especially for the steroid era). Basically he was Keith Hernandez after Keith Hernandez. (Incidentally Keith's final card is also in this set, though I don't recall seeing it come up in any of these packs.)

    This set still has a special place for me. I’m a Reds fan and this set had the first cards in a Cincinnati uniform of key people that would help the Reds win the World Series. Piniella, Hal Morris,Randy Myers, Glen Braggs, and Billy Hatcher.

  • @JStried35

    Are those from the same wax box? Seems weird some wrappers had clear plastic and some had no clear plastic?

  • @deronsworld1783
    @deronsworld1783 5 лет назад +1

    The factory set cards (were printed on white cardstock by Topps' plant in Ireland), the wax pack cards were produced domestically and printed on graystock. The set was supposed to be much different than it turned out for the first year of traded wax. In the end of it all I would keep the wax but ditch the factory set.

    I actually didn't mind the looks of this set growing up, I mean its definitely 80's and 90's vibrant colors. By today's standards, yeah it's ugly. 1990 Donruss I thought was much much worse in design. One thing I did appreciate about junk wax era Topps compared to Fleer and Donruss was they always had a thicker card stock.

    Ben McDonald was not as bad as some of the prospects that didn't pan out. He did pitch in 9 seasons and have a WAR over 20 (using baseball reference).

    • @SladetoBlack
      @SladetoBlack 5 лет назад +1

      Every time Jabs pulls a Ben McDonald he talks about how big of a bust he was and I get so irritated because he was a good pitcher. Career ERA under 4.00, which was impressive in that era. Threw a bunch of complete games. Shame he got bit by the injury bug.

    Note the wax pack cards and the complete set cards are printed on different card stock. Wax packs printed on the same stock as normal 1990's topps. The factory sets printed on the white stock. Set collectors might go for the wax packs to hand complete the "variation".

    Hi Erik, love your vids content having been a card dealer(mostly BB) myself 86-91. My favorite set of recent history was 1984 Donruss, beautiful bright colors and sharp pictures. I still have over 100,000 cards, some from the 50's and 60's most from the 70's and early 80's( my own collection), becoming a dealer in 86. I don't do anything with the cards, they sit around the house. I don't have a venue through which to sale them, just waiting for them to make a come back HA-HA...……..

    I was surprised Topps decided to put this 1990 Traded year in packs. I bought some that year but also didn't care for the design plus the rookie crop was poor. The card stock is the traditional cardboard but also the thicker white paper stock as in years past.

    I like this set becauss the price is so low. I bought a bunch of set for almost no money and put together somr sets of all Dead Nuts Centered cards. Try doing that - it's lots of fun. Ended up seling all the other cards by grouping them in Team Lots and Rookie Lots. Tripled my money and kept 3 perfectly centered Sets. You can do that for many other late 80's and 90's Sets. So don't knock what you call ugly sets.

    • @supprr

      @@bowmanbrent419 yes all those years had just the last name on the front, or stats, or the names in weird fonts. 1999 donruss and fleer are ugly. I think all those late 90s early 2000s are forgotten because most of us stopped collecting. I stopped around 1994.
