Phenylalanine is an amino acid, not a sweetener. They have to label it as an ingredient for people who have phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder which prevents proper metabolism of this amino acid.

I'm the president of the PKU Organization of Illinois and Allied Disorders and very few people get why that warning is on the can! I wonder how many people will google phenylalanine after watching this episode? :)

Danae Bartke Thank you, I never knew anyone with this disorder but I remember hearing about it in high school or college biology many years ago! And now every time I read a can of soda I think about that. Hopefully someone else will learn something important today!

Let's get this cleared up, because it's a common misconception: phenylalanine is not a sweetener. It's an amino acid, which are the natural parts of proteins. ALL protein you eat has phenylalanine. It is not harmful in any way. So why do we need to declare it? Most artificial sweeteners have it, and why is it not printed on anything with protein?
People who have the disease PKU (one of the things they test for when they stab newborn baby heels) cannot process phenylalanine. If they eat phenylalanine, it builds up in their brains and they experience extreme mental delay and emotional instability. So they eat no protein. However artificial sweeteners do not have enough protein that they need to declare it. So it says 0 grams of protein, but there is some protein. If they used artificial sweeteners, but it's not enough to put protein in the nutritional facts, they, by law, must put that it contains phenylalanine. Notice, it actually says: "Phenylketonurics: contains phenylalanine." The warning is just for phenylketonurics, people who have PKU (phenylketonuria).

Dude, do your research on Aspartame and the effects it has in the human body. Its only safe if you drink 1 serving a day, more than that and you get side effects, it's poison.

L-phenylalanine, the natural form found in proteins
D-phenylalanine (a mirror image of L-phenylalanine that is made in a laboratory)
DL-phenylalanine, a combination of the 2 forms
anyway I read your comment again, and there really isn't anything to debate. but your statement made it seem like the substitute is safe, and that's a bold statement.
Aspartame has much more phenylalanin than other proteins. Also to many people who are allergic to this stuff eat certain kinds of meat but soda is NOT an obvious place for th is stuff.

Nathan Davidson When I had to take medicine I washed it down with Dr.Pepper and after that it tasted like medicine. It tastes regular now but it didn't for about a month.

Phenolphthalein (what Link call phenylalanine) is a detector of a basic solution. By itself, it is clear, but when put in a solution that is more basic (above a pH of around 7, which is neutral), it will turn a bright pink. Phenolphthalein is mainly used in acid base titrations.

Just to clarify for anyone watching around 3:00, phenylalanine is not a sweetener. It's an amino acid that occurs in most foods. People with a specific genetic condition (phenylketonuria) cannot process it and require a special diet free of phenylalanine. It's not toxic to anyone else.

Also, Pepsi True and Coke Life both use the stevia plant extract, which is a natural noncaloric sweetener. The companies are going for an "all natural" reduced-calorie product, by using cane sugar and stevia extract. Since stevia extract has a peculiar flavor profile, they aren't able to use it as the only sweetener.

Its not always about the calories is about what nutrition do they give, how many would u have to drink to get some type of nutrition.
