The class discusses Gregory's Oration 2 (In Defense of Flight) -- where we focus on his courage, honesty, and humility) and his Five Theological Orations (Oration 27 through 31).
In discussing his Five Theological Orations, we discuss:
His view of the attributes necessary for a theologian.
His constant emphasis that the theologian not draw theological conclusions that are beyond his abilities and understanding.
His focus on the incomprehensibility and ineffability of God.
His argument for the Holy Trinity.
His argument that the revelation of God is progressive and gradual throughout salvation history.
His use of the Bible, and especially his understanding of descriptions of Jesus as applying to Jesus as man and Jesus as divine.
