I find it very touching to see how she subtly helps him along throughout the interview, keeping things moving, correcting his memory, picking up his ever falling sheets of notes and how gracefully she accepts being put on the spot to deliver any speech that he requests…their friendship obviously goes back a long way and the fact that Clint Eastwood suggested a direction, which she appreciates gives me no end of pleasure.
I am just a few years younger than Judi Dench, and I really sympathize with her when she can't remember some simple thing that she KNOWS, it's just it won't come to mind right then. You would think in an audience like that someone would give her the next word! I enjoyed hearing her comments and opinions and memories very much.
What an incredibly snobbish and exhausting display from ND. Shakespeare is for the people and his words are for everyone. FINALLY Judi Dench gets to speak after an insane display of, it needs to be said, bullshit by the ND staff. It's almost childlike in their understanding of Shakespeare and having someone like Judi Dench speak there. Sucking up to someone that is clearly baffled by the introductions. What a strange video.
Dame Judi was wonderful as ever, however I can't help feeling increasingly irked that Sir Stanley kept asking her to recite chunks of dialogue. I mean she clearly has an insane memory, but the whole 'dance monkey dance' aspect got very wearing. Judi handled it with style and grace but as a consummate professional I'm sure she would have preferred to have time to prepare or at least a script handy to prompt her rather than being put on the spot like that, particularly in front of an audience. I know she was asked to and she *could* have said no, but having grown up in a theatrical and operatic environment myself performers feel immense pressure to not let down an audience by saying no. Even Noel Coward and Judy Garland talked about this.
Good Lord Why is it that introductions are so tiresomely long these days? These people simply love to have themselves be heard as much as the illustrious personages that they are presenting. How tiresome.
