Love this song.
Curt is a beast on the base on this song...is one of my fave TFF songs. Im in Los Angeles and was in 6th grade when the Hurting came out...half of all USA sells of the Hurting came from Los Angeles...I heard Roland in an interview say that. We couldn't get enough of TFF from The Hurting they were the darlings of KROQ at the time. I had such a huge crush on Roland but I was not aware he sang at the time. I thought he was the Andrew Ridgely (Wham)of TFF. Boy was I so silly lol

Total layman as I am at playing instruments, I feel Curt exquisitely weaving sort of 'sorrows & hurt feelings smouldering within himself into the song in a restricted way unlike his favorite bands, Metallica, Blue Oyster Cult, etc..:)

And as you insightfully pointed out, all these 4 members were one of the best acts in 80's. The spiritual light hidden in this 'suffered' sound is something only hurt-minded geniuses can create.
