Fred is such a nice guy. I used to had him on facebook, and even though this is a man who has almost flown everything that's out there, he was always eager to answer us in a very kind and polite manner. A true professional. Nice review BTW
What a beautiful ship... absolutely gorgeous!! The last GS I was in was a IV, back in the 80s. I was invited by my dad's old copilot on a flight to Houston, returning that evening. What a thrill!! I can’t imagine what flying in the 650 is like.
I dont understand people complaining it has too much range and needs to be faster. Not many jets go above the speed of sound and they are generally not allowed to under 60 000 feet. Generally jets can't get up to 60 000 feet. If it had less range people would complain about that. Its a very fast jet that can go far. I won't complain if someone gives me one. The planes I flew generally could not go over 700 miles and I am in helicopters now. 110 knots and 300 miles. Would love to be up and above the crappy weather at mach 0.9 going to Manila in the cold weather. Stop whining over silly things in areas you have no expertise. Good job Gulfstream. Remember me at Christmas, Thanks.

true. if it were to go faster than mach 1, it would be a far more complex aircraft, variable exhaust nozzles and such. but i'm sure a supersonic business jet would have huge demand in the billionaire world.

Hi. It is a very technical video but very nice to watch if you are interested in knowing more about the G650. It is amazing how the humans can produce something like that. This aircraft deserves (like the G550 or the Falcon 7X) a superb pilot. Please make more videos of this wonderful bird. Even if it lasts for one hour, I'll watch it. Best wishes to all.
Hmmm... I thought LPV stood for Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance. I don't recall ever hearing Lateral Precision with Vertical Guidance. What's the difference?
Ok . great job with the video on the gulfstream g650. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I am not a pilot but I am an aviation enthusiasts and did mr george say 7000 mile range? is not the correct answer supposed to be 7000 nautical miles.
I don't normally write comments about corrections but.. Hey AviationWeek I expected you guys/galls to be sharper on this. Saying and writing V2 decision speed 108 @ 1:28 was a mistake. The definition of LPV was also incorrect, should be Localizer Performance.. I know I'm not the first to recognize it and we all make mistakes, just wanted to help and point those out. Cool video otherwise!
it really bothers me that the synthetic view in PFD (plus the background music) while taking off at rwy 19 7:00 is not on the centerline. Anyway, magnificent bird and delightful video!
4:38 - lucky those throttles aren't 'really' connected to the engines directly but via a FADEC system, otherwise those engines would be telling the pilot to 'F*ck off!'
Do you think a G650 will be on display at Oshkosh? We pack up in a Cessna 172 and ate flying to Oshkosh tomorrow. You think they will have one on display and potentially open to go inside?
and I have studied it in detail, and have found some areas that could be useful in making the G650's successor even better. I have enclosed a list of improvements I hope you and Gulfstrem will fine both interesting and helpful. Make sure the list contains zero BS, and is factual and intelligently put together in words an engineer will understand and appreciate. Remember these guys are professional plane designers and builders, so they will smell BS from a mile off. Good luck.
Nice video but it would have been a lot more interesting if there were an embedded image from a chase plane perspective so viewers can see what each pilot maneuver caused the plane to do.
The guy on the left seat didn’t even have his hands on the yoke even we’ll after adding TO Thrust and Auto throttle took over. The Gulfstream test pilot had to remind him for him to put his hands on the yoke. Not good. For stall recovery, the same guy still holds the yoke full aft while adding Max thrust.
I've experienced several rides in Gulfstream aircraft but never in the pilot's seat. I'm struck by how fixated this left-seater was on the HUD. Never a glance out the window to his left! Yes the HUD is helpful but also stay aware of potentially conflicting traffic in lateral airspace.
all aircrafts do have the potential, V1 starts from VMCG all the way to VMBE , and most jets on dry mass has the potential to fly below VMCG but not practiced ;)
I'm typed on the 650 and my comments were included in major discussions in class. I just don't understand where Gulfstream comes up with the phrase, "advanced features". The Gulfstream Advisory Group was lacking in their 'outside' knowledge when designing the systems in this jet.
Nice Video, however for your voice over work, you need to sound proof the room in which your doing your read. I am jealous by the way that I'm not flying this bird
LOL. A380 engines have nothing to do with these engines, and control yoke is a better solution to flight control than multiple side sticks for various reasons. Check out an AF447 documentary if you want to know more.
LOL RedRider, obviously the A380 engines are different than the smaller ones on the G650, BUT the hapless, shoddy workmanship and design can be attributed to the same Company! I am aware of AF447 and the right seat pilot's side stick over riding the left seat guy trying to correct the stall. That being said, why is Gulfstream claiming that side sticks are such a wonderful solution for their G500/600? In any event, referring to the G650, why the need for that little bit of extra speed?..and what is the significant offsetting cost of attaining that performance
Edited... Good question about the sidestick on the G500/600. I can only guess that with the G500/600 coming out later they decided to change to the sidestick configuration. It does give the pilots more room for meals especially. (I originally wrote the G650 came out later). As for that little bit of extra speed, keep in mind buyers of the G650 are going to be the richest people in the world. It can be a di*k size contest for some of them while others can actually take advantage of the speed and justify the extra expense. They can buy a perfectly good, new, biz jet for $10M or less but the G650 is selling starting ay $64.5M so a few extra dollars in gas isn't going to bother them. And I agree that RR reputation has suffered and for quite a while. They also cost Lockheed L-1011 sales years ago when the UK government had to bail them out. MD sold many more DC-10 jets and many of them crashed. You could say RR poor management indirectly caused many of those deaths. And then of course the A380 engine failure where the crew did a spectacular job of bringing that super jumbo home in one piece. As the British say, cheers!

It has a yoke because other than the FBW, they wanted it to be as close to a G550 as possible hoping the FAA would go for adding it to the common GV type rating. It's pretty much G550 (systems) in a new body. Same cockpit as a G550/450. The FAA said nope, new type; so they moved forward & junked the yoke and 550/450 cockpit when building the 500/600, abandoning complete commonality knowing the FAA would make it be a new type also.
