      @@captaingreenhat EverQuest is absolutely worth getting back into. I have deeply loved this game since I started as a young Mage in 2003, and it continues to touch me in ways nothing else ever has. It can be hard at times, but it's absolutely worth playing still! :)

      I'm still amazed at the longevity of some MMOs. Everquest, Eve Online, WoW and more. I worked at a mom and pop computer store back in the late 90's and still remember helping customers build new computers just to play EQ. I never got into EQ but I still respect the game, yes WoW was my first MMO I really played and now I play Eve Online, that being said I still look for a modern EQ type MMO to come out, maybe I should give EQ a try.

      @@captaingreenhat PoP ruined it for me, in a way. The portals kind of removed the adventure part of eq, although most games now have that element in one way or another anyways. Im thinking of going back myself. Did you go back and play since your post here? If so, was it worth going back and are you still on?

      Absolutely agreed. This is the type of "review" that tells you it's not just a spreadsheet comparison of numbers. It's a passion.
      UO was indeed my first MMORPG also after playing Gemstone 3 MUD. This video and this "review" hit home so close to my heart. Love this video. I'm an EQer off and on since 1999. Was a guide on Xegony back in the day. Norrath burned itself straight into my very soul and bones. Strange that a game can do that, bit it did. I love this world.
      Thanks for this video.

    I came back to EQ recently after having left around Planes of Power and I’m kind of blown away by how good it is. Granted, I am playing on a timelocked progression server, but I was surprised that the nostalgia actually held up and provided a really fun experience I thought could never be captured again since EQ was my first MMO.

      Yeah, nothing can ever match that feel EQ gave you. And no game will ever be able to create the community that EQ created. MMORPG games nowadays make it to easy to just solo your way through the entire game. EQforced you to interact and depend on others to do almost everything

    I’ve played this game since I was seven years old and snuck on and made a character on my dads account... been hooked ever since. Been off and on as my life moved forward, been part of some of the largest most productive raid guilds, family style guilds, and then made alts just to join some friends I try to corrupt to eq lifestyle... I have so many great and some sad memories with this game the sad ones mostly relate to when one of the guilds I was in disbanded because the player base was just declining .... this game brings those you play with together fantastically... the age groups this game can hit are insurmountable... I have played with 70 year olds and I have played with other people my age and somehow the groups almost always mix well cause that’s the effect this game has on people it brings everyone together when you get down to the root of it... I’m now 22years old played this game while I was in the Marine Corps and got a few people to play the game while there... once you start the game tends to stick to you and I love that...

    Thank god I found this video. I'm a 39 year old guy, toying w/ the idea of playing EQ for the first time in 2021. I've been only finding class guides, private server guides, all kinds of random stuff... nothing just... explaining what it's like to play the game in modern times. I'm only 10 minutes in so far... but I had to shoot down to the comments to express my happiness. I just want a HUGE mmo that feels like a natural world... with deep, deep systems. Really excited to see what EQ has to offer. I've been playing Project: Gorgon, and while I love it... it feels a bit empty still.

  • @tropictom5996
    @tropictom5996 5 лет назад +4

    Quick note to the curious:
    Many types of games have sim vs arcade variants. For example: Tiger Woods Golf/Mario Golf, MS Flight Simulator/Ace Combat etc.
    Everquest is on the sim side of the scale in terms of depth, degree of difficulty, true mental engagement. For some, this may sound daunting but there is a tremendous reward associated with this. In EQ, your skill matters. Your depth of knowledge, your tactics, your mastery of your player, combat mechanics, crafting... all of these things allow YOU to make a name for yourself. In nearly all other MMO’s it’s mostly just a matter of time served.
    EQ will give you a sense of discovery and pride in accomplishment like no other. It is still the gold standard in this regard. In a way it’s almost like the Shakespeare of this genre. It is the base for all else that followed. Give it a go, you will be glad you did.

    • @divinemortus
      @divinemortus 5 лет назад +3

      Nice post but poor analogy. EQ has never required much skill mechanically, in that regard it is very simple. I can't think of another MMO where you could play multiple characters at a high level of efficiency. Otherwise, you hit the nail on the head: an encyclopedia of knowledge built over 20 years, attachment to your character built by the vast amount of time the game demand and the friendships that you formed, now that the game has been mostly past massive grinds for several years, sheer dedication
      Whilst I left the game in CoTF - not quitting, just a change of location putting me far from my guild and server's timezone, raiding was still fun, I remember beating the VoA boss (love it or hate it) and getting that sense of pride, but for a while, I'd hated how items in the game had just become bland tiers until BIS and improving them felt more like a chore than a reward. This happened when they began making group gear that surpassed the power of the previous top raid items. This completely killed the mid-tier raiding scene - which previously was very active and a nice community, for example in TSS, you had guilds a bit lower still working on raids in DPoB and PoR, with maybe some of the lower TSS stuff you saw people wearing a complete mismatch of the best gear they could from here... but I heavily digress.
      One thing I hate about modern MMOs is the "grouping" experience. You are matched in a dungeon with a bunch of random people. No one talks, it ends and you never see them again - they might not even have been on the same server. In EQ the community matters - and your reputation on the server! That is such a great thing that most modern MMOs seem to shun for single play. (and also spawned some of the best drama ever on server forum boards).

    • @tropictom5996
      @tropictom5996 5 лет назад +2

      tdawe : I quit a long time ago probably just after Planes of Power or the one after that. Not sure if the game watered down after that. I could effectively run several high levels, that part is true. I think that what I was trying to get at was, every single person in a raid had some very specific do’s and dont’s. Pullers had to be skilled. Healers has to have their timing synced with other healers, DPS had to meter their output. These are examples of the Do’s. In terms of dont’s, there was less tolerance for errors than other MMO’s. Single afk’s, standing in the wrong spot etc. were often wipe level errors as opposed to the minor nuisance in other MMO’s. This sort of “non-casual” threat often separated the known skilled guilds/players from the highly questionable :). In other MMO’s the penalty for sub par play was not so bad.

    I played from launch for about 10 years or so. Still remember getting my first SoW from a passing druid in the Butcherblock Mountains hehe. I ran so fast. =D
    Also, I was camping hill giants for plat when a system wide message went out that there was 100.000 players online for the first time ever. Good times.
    It's been a good while since I played, though. I think 80 was the cap when I stopped. Well, it didn't so much stop as kinda peter out. Friends were logging in less and less and eventually so did I. I had a good run, though, and loved every minute of it.

    Hello! I stopped watching at 8:00 because I'm planning on trying out Everquest and I didn't want to spoil much lol. But my question to YOU is which version of Everquest do you recommend me starting on?
    (back story time! You can skip this if you're not interested in reading. I have always wanted to play Everquest so long ago when I heard about it in the 6th grade [that's 16 years ago] My computer at the time couldn't handle what was then an immense hardcore graphics! So I had a hole in my heart, not knowing the great big world of adventures striving my curiosity of what this game without borders or linear pathways was. I think I only had a taste of it when I tried the demo when it came out on the ps2 which didn't last a few days due to restrictions. Eventually forgotten Everquest and went on to other games and found WoW eventually and have matured with responsibilities now... I have always wondered what my life and experiences would have been if I had started with Everquest before any other MMO. Would I have thought that every other game after Everquest would feel too easy. Here is my chance, now that Everquest is in front of me again, I can't help but regain that curiosity i once had, and this time in a new world I have never seen before.)

When ever I do jump in, I always get a nostalgia feel anyhow, knowing that I am walking through areas that fans have enjoyed for 20 years. I love that this game has lasted so long, even if I was not a part of it's history.

    I still remember vanilla EQ when I was 15. Corpse drags, weekend Bazaars near Freeport, mob trains, and the dreaded hell levels every five levels starting 25 at or 30, if I remember correctly. The Hill and Sand giants always scared the shit out of me any time I saw one too. I also recollect how the game wasn't made for soloing at that time, and much of my experience was lost getting jumped by random mobs while meditating. I still remember camping for the 4 rings for the Paw of Opalla quest, for over 3 damn days. I had to quit once my sound cut out, and my computer didn't have enough space for the Ruins of Kunark expansion :/.

    I lefy Everquest in 2006 for Wow. As a mainly solo player Wow offered so much more gain for time invested. However, I came back to Everquest a few years back as wow started to make classes less individual and more cookie cutter. Everquest now offers a good solo experience, I have got my SK to 110 solo and for a paid account getting to 70 is easy and due to mercs and not too difficukt for a non paid account. Love Everquests lore, skill (it still whacks you hard if you make mistakes). I love helping out people by buffing them with my clerics enchanters etc especially in the newbie modes. The players in Everquest are by and large extremely friendly and more mature than wow (was a huge shock when i switched to wow just how awful the chat could be, especially Barrens chat)
    I love Everquest and when I visit old zones, I still get that lovely feeling of nostalgia and really enjoy going back to places where i used to group.
    I will start to group more once ive hit 115 with some of my lower toon but getting to 115 solo/molo is a challenge i have set myself.
    Everquest is still a great game and this review is a tremendous way to understand the world and its populace.

    Really enjoyed this video and I was there on day one of the original launch and I agree with you that eq is not perfect but a dam good game. I also tried many other mmorpgs and like you I was on UO beforehand but I have NEVER had a gaming experience like I did with eq. And your right, all the initial downtime (remember casters had to look at their spell books for most of combat back then) was sort of a blessing. People started conversations, I met all types of different people snd both nice ones and ninja looters (before that got fixed heh). Eq had something beyond just power leveling and getting the best gear etc (easy for me to say since I never got to max level). All the crafting, trading, helping ppl with quests or sending a mob train on them etc. I would spend hours at the bank (before the bazaar) and yes I saw the first accounts sold on eBay and the both of two boxing. I watch people take advantage of exploits until they were patched but there was so much to do, so many zones, mobs, NPCs, factions, items on and on. And I was aware that each expansion expanded the length of the stick with the carrot on the end but I didn’t mind because eq was still fun. There is a dark side to spending 12 (or more) hours a day grinding and on one hand ppl would brag being top dog for their class but on the other hand that meant they had not much of a life in the real world. I remember getting butterflies in my stomach when I would be up on the it’d tower and looked down. The chance of falling and loosing hours of exp had a real affect and having consequences was a good thing. You needed to ask for help often and that lead to adventures, sometimes things went well and other times it was one wipe after another and corpse recovery etc. I also remember a buddy literally staying in line for 30+ hours for his jboots! He did not want to give up after all that time invested. Then the next dude in line got his jboots on the next spawn. I still need to explore your channel but wonder if you have made a video that goes over interesting events either in the main history (back in the day different guilds would compete who had the fastest kills, who is furthest in the current game etc) but also just interesting stories like when the GM lost his mind and started randomly gating ppl in a dangerous zone.
    I had a friend who decided to quit and bound himself in lava and went for a walk. His max level (was 50 back then) dropped 20 or 30 levels and of course he changed his mind and somehow knew a friend who knew a GM who restored all his exp back (but he had to go around and repurchase his high level spells. Oh the memories...
    I am blown away the current team of 5 running the game and expansions etc.
    Edit: man when I heard the eq music it brought me back. I also think eq had awesome sound effects for spells too.

    I returned to EQ last October after a 7 year break and /testcopy to Test server. I got from level 90-110 in around a week of casual play. I got into the one and only raiding guild on Test and everyone has been so helpful. I love EQ and am so happy to come back to a great relaxed atmosphere!!!

    I have been playing WoW Classic lately and really enjoying it but I have always been interested in trying out Everquest. Do you guys still think that it is worth getting into in 2020? I don't mind a learning curve and absolutely hate the hand holding ridiculousness that most mmorpg's give you now. I enjoy having to actually having to figure things out myself. Is their still people playing this game and would it be worth it to get into now? I will probably go ahead and get a subscription, or whatever it is called, to start off on a progression server. Does anybody know which progressiin or server would be best for new player to start on?

    I am a current EQ player on the bertox. server I run a cleric, bard, and druid 3 box team with a tank and two dps mercs (I know i love support and healing classes). I left games like WoW for a more immersive game. I am literally never ever bored in this game there is so much to see and do. The community is far less toxic them many that I have seen mostly due the the reliance of grouping and servers are standalone ergo the assholes are identified, put on ignore, and the transfer or leave after not getting a group due to their reputation. No matter where I go for games I always find my way back to EQ ever single time.

    Edit: Looked into the game a bit more. So how MUCH of Norrath can I explore? Like the underworld, sky realm, polar areas, and etc.

    I really cant thank you enough for sharing this. I dont think I will play EQ as the super casual style of play is what allows me to dip my toes into MMO's with a burden of responsibilities. However I dont think I have ever seen such a detailed and entertaining outline of an MMO many of us had cultural exposure to growing up (even if we didn't play the game). We all knew what Everquest was, and comparing your words with my own experience to "my" MMO was super entertaining. I'm sad I missed out on it. But glad I got to log in, hear the music as a kid, and even played a bit of EQ Online Adventures for my PS2.

    I started 6 days before PoP, the "trilogy" that I had purchased was almost dead, so I soloed a ton up to like 30. Did not purchase Luclin for close to a year later and pop another 6 months after that when I believe LoY came out, maybe it was LDON and I got all before it. Still couldn't really do anything in the pop expansion due to my computer being not very good, I finally managed to mostly solo my way as a monk up to close to max level and got a new computer that I could play pop zones on. Finally stated raiding, and it was a grand Ole time. Many years later, I finally dedicated time to a TLP to experience the older content I had not previously, although waiting until Kunark and leveling an Iksar Monk as my main, set me pretty far behind and that's a whole other thing. I had planned on riding this server out until mercs came to the game at least because that's about when I had quit playing on live (not because of mercs though). I'd still like to play live, by at the same time, some of the expansions I missed that included the expansion with the clockworks, seeds of destruction and house of Thule seem like they would be fun too, but I don't think TLPs go that far before being merged or shut down.

I played EQ2 quite a bit from early 2014 through 2016 but I stepped back from it gradually in 2016, partially thanks to Daybreak being ridiculous and cancelling EQN. However, I'd absolutely love to truly get into this game, I just don't have the time or the patience to do so when I already don't have time for the MMOs I'm active on these days such as RuneScape and ESO lol. Neither, I'd say just hop back in first before either depending when you last played, what server it was on, you might have a better time starting over on Bristlebane or Firiona Vie relearning the game from level 1 (the early levels fly by unlike the days of old) If you are into it, grab a sub as you swing past the 50's and 60's, don't need the newest expansion unless you are nearing 105 range.

    Not gonna lie man; this video hit me right in the nostalgia feels. I've been keeping EQ and EQ2 updated, but I haven't played either in about a year. I mainly went back to EQ1 for the progression servers and even started a BST on live once my sub ran out. I originally played EQ1 up until the end of PoP, but I remember getting my epic weapon on my cleric and being a rezzing god to all my friends and guildies. It was great fun, but after WoW came out - a lot of my online friends jumped ship, leaving me with no one to play with. Regardless of that, I still love the franchise with EQ2 being my favorite of the two. Still, with the 20 yr anniversary coming up, I might just log back in and check out what's new! I still have a free 85 frog monk they gave out a few years back, but never did anything with.

    Really cool video. I played on P99 for a little while but lost interest after hearing about the corruption behind the people who run it (manipulating things in the game for friends, guild favoritism, "mysterious" disconnects for people who go against them, etc). EQ was my first MMO and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Currently play The Al'Kabor Project and also currently help testing for another project called EQClassic, but this video so far has gotten me interested in giving the live game a try again. My big question is though, if I were to be a FTP player (being unemployed sucks) is there still a meaningful experience to be had for a player who hadn't been there for a decade and a half?

    • @NerdNavigator
      @NerdNavigator  5 лет назад +1

      I don't believe FTP exists in Everquest. I mentioned in the video, its more like free to try but eventually for a meaningful experience a subscription is required.
      There is the test server which is free.... but it is a shell of a population, the lowest of pretty much any server and I don't believe shares the same experience as a high populated server.
      An emulated server is likely the best option if a subscription is out of ones means. If you are looking for a new experience an alternative might be shardsofdalaya.com/ they have a lot of custom content which is pretty cool.

      @@NerdNavigator Thanks for the quick response. Admittedly I was a little quick in asking that question, should have waited until the full video was over, hehe. Kind of dumb on my part. I do appreciate your honesty in either case. :)
