    Still my favorite game of ALL time. EQ "stole" 3-4 years of my life from 99-03 but I wouldn't give it up for the world. So many fun memories and relationships. (Veeshan server, Ashlain)

      Agreed, the fun of the game was the fact that it had no direction on it all. It was sink or swim, and it was scary as hell to die. You could lose all that precious nerd time leveling up to a decayed corpse!

      I was on Veeshan too, during that era, oh the joy of getting spawn jumped by FoH, lol. I was in a guild called Guardians of Veeshan. Your name sounds familiar. I was kinda shocked they merged Veeshan into Luclin/Rathe server, and dropped the server name. Veeshan was the shit. Actually, I just re-started playing, just for fun and nostalgia. It's a trip for sure. I otherwise play ESO and GW2 these days

    Back when this came out, my daughter began playing as did I. E.Q. used rather large words in dialog and dialog was written and you replied in writing! You also got farther by working with others and knowing your role in a team. So I wasn't completely surprised when my daughter's teacher told me that my daughter had the best typing skills of anyone she's ever seen at her age, that her vocabulary was better than many college student's (She was in middle school) and her spelling ability was close to perfect. In short, E.Q. back in the day was a true educational tool.

    Started way back in 1999. Still love the game. But I guess im an old schooler. Not used to soloing so much. What made EQ1 great back in the day as the grouping and making friends and such. I cant get back into it because of this.

      It was kind of lame how that made it to where you could pay like 30ish bucks and start a character at level 80. What's the fun in that? WoW did it, so I guess they felt obliged to compete with that.

    Excellent video Nerd Navigator. I've reentered the game and am enjoying it just as much as I did when Ruins of Kunark came out. I request maybe doing a video going over trade skilling in the revamped Everquest as well as Achievements. It has changed a lot since 1999, and this would provide a huge value to EQ gamers. Thanks for all you do.

    I played when PoP first came out, and if you remember Riftseekers Sanctum off of Muramite Proving Grounds, I actually used to box dps and healer for the group. So, when I was making a group and a guild tank wasn't available, I'd have to ask the LFG tank how much HP and AC they had before inviting them. It really was like night or day to either heal a raid geared guild tank, as opposed to healing a causal LFG tank.

    I played a grand total of ~20 minutes of EverQuest aroudn 2003. I haven't followed it closely since then besides being aware of Project 1999. I almost exclusively make World of Warcraft videos, but your video was recommended for me, and I'm glad I watched it - really insightful stuff. This is one of the best reviews I've ever seen of an MMORPG and actually has left me pretty interested in trying EQ.

    My husband and I used to play EQ all the time when we were dating - 13 years ago. I loved the game and still do. Now we don't have too much time to play - sadly. But my mom-in-law still plays and goes on raids with her guild each week :). This year I downloaded the game again and I'm amazed at the upgrades. I still can't believe that my mom-in-law kept the guild I created back when I was 16 or 17 going (she is awesome). Seeing my old guild really made my day. Great family game that will run on a laptop and keep you busy for hours on end. :) It might be an old-school game, but it is a great game.

    I don't know why, but I'm always drawn to 'old school' 3D graphics. I could care less about some modern realistic, super flashy stuff which new games do, not to mention constantly having to fret about if my PC can run it, should i spend money to upgrade parts etc... I'm sure nostalgia plays huge role in this for me, but I truly feel more comfortable with graphics as in EQ, including WoW and its first expansions. The graphics back then were easy on our systems, still looked nice and bright. Not counting EQ2, which graphics I adore, but couldn't be run on almost any PC properly when it released and even to this day, due to its CPU requirements is unplayable at full graphics smoothly, even at more modern PCs.

      i played wow for a long time but wow sucks dick now it's a gamble loot system without any real reward system for good players anymore it's meant to be played by casual players who are coming for one addon and leaving after it that's why i don't play any games of blizz anymore i hate them for destroying every game i once loved d1/d2(those 2 games where so dark .... d3 is like a kid friendly version of d1 and d2....) wc2/wc3 RoC/TfT (they killed my favorite RTS game for a MMORPG) WoW classic/Bc/wotlk/legion was good but the gambling loot system was crap and more things but yeah one thing is for me clear now i will never go back for a blizzard game anymore at least not with this kind of view of making games i hope someday they will wake up and see that money wasn't the right choice

    Interesting Video. I played EQ from Dec. 1999 - 2004 ish give or take.. I was on the Xegony server,.. Primary character was "Velocity" a top level Raid Guild Paladin at the 'peak' of EQ imho.. there was a time, for me, where the game was in its pinnacle form, I believe it probably had the most people, and no end was in sight. I still believe Planes of Power was ultimately the best overall expansion through and through. Raiding in PoP was exceptionally fun.. especially when they released one more expansion PAST PoP where you could gear up to supplement your limited PoP dragon gear and not get crushed in raids as you acquired a majority of actual Raid gear that .. if you recall.. generally went on DKP and to "Select" members before others (oh the drama).
    Being a Paladin I always had to fight the "Paladins can't tank.. or heal.. or DPS.. " lol.. So I had to essentially be the best Paladin on the server (If there were any better , it was few).. And I had the gear, AA points, and 'ability' to pull targets, stun lock targets while tanking them and healing myself and the GROUP .. things other pure tanks couldn't do. So I remember in pick up groups.. the initial hesitancy to add me as their tank (for good reason) and then after several mobs the group remarking on how they didn't think it was possible for a Pally to do what I did. Hybrid classes got a lot of abilities.. but jack of trades master of none sort of deal that you had to really fill in the deficits with ability, gear, and Alternate Advancement points (in the many thousands) for those uber abilities others didn't have.
    Still for straight raiding .. I'd tank 'off mobs' .. the REAL dragons / primary targets would be tanked by a proper tank.. ie: Warrior. The PUG's in the planes were so much fun.. from Plane of Fear to Po(whatever) .. I still remember starting in freeport and seeing a level 50 Paladin with a soulfire in awe.. to running through plane of fear with screaming banshee's , wraiths, and god knows what chasing me (and summoning me back to them lol).
    Eventually I went back and so many expansions had occurred the game just felt bloated and I wasn't into it any longer. I'll never go back to EQ but in it's time.. it was beyond addicting and took up WAAAY too much time. ;)

    • @NerdNavigator
      @NerdNavigator  7 лет назад

      If you are starting from scratch on a new server at lvl 1? I'd say I could be raid ready in about a month with about 3 hours a night of playing (and a few more hours on the weekend) Thanks to catch up mechanics like autogrant AA and knowing how to cheese the early levels, like using a Tank mercenary until lvl 55ish. Now if you have never played the game? Will probably take a bit longer as you find the right zones to level in, learn the mechanics of your class and how to most effectively farm plat to purchase upgrades through the leveling process. Might double the time and take 2 months. Things like finding a good guild or players to help would speed up this process. It is possible to powerlevel a character from 1 - 85ish in a day if someone with that ability was helping. There are guilds that do legacy raiding which you could get into starting out with as they would be more likely to take you in the soonest rather than the competitive "hard core" raiding guilds.

    I tried to go back to this just a couple months ago. I reactivated my account and bought a lvl up package since my main was only in his 70's and I had not played in so many expansions. It was a month long event of trying to find a group, let alone a guild. I tried several servers and had absolutely no luck even finding a group. I was pretty pissed off after spending money on several lvl up packages to check different servers. The few replies I even garnered were full of derision and questions of if I even knew how to play my character.
    Admittedly I have not played in a raid guild since the Plane of Time era, however I WAS in a guild that had Quarm on farm and farmed crystalline weapons prior to a rival guild releasing Kerafyrm and ending farm mode. I know how to play. The game may still be around, but there is no community at all. The game, for all intents and purposes, is dead.

      I mainly play 1 character myself but would be lieing if I said I didn't have any boxes as one point in time I did try to. I had a buddy that loved to Duo box, Its not a bad way to go, I feel like with 6 boxing you have to divide your attention way to much unless you can get clever with some classes and using ISBoxer (which is what I did, but hate the sub model they had) But 2 characters, Its like the goldielocks zone for efficiency and boxing.

    If they could take EQ's gameplay and tack it on to a graphics engine like TESOs...I'd love it. Basically, just take all the dialog, lore, quests, classes, etc. lifted from EQ and inserted into a 2017 engine.

    I stopped playing EQ somewhere just around the release of Shadows of Luclin. I'm somewhat surprised it's still even active, but that's really cool! I was on a PvP server and in the early days PKs could even steal any non-No Drop item you had equipped anywhere on your person outside of your weapon slots and there was not a lot of No Drop gear back then. It was such a dynamic world though, that I remember when my character outgrew his little newbie areas and I had to go run through perilous zones filled with nasty MOBs and PKs and what not to seek my next hunting ground. The run from Qeynos to Highpass through the Keranos plains was like 25 minutes long, and that was if you could find a kindly Druid or Shaman to give you a Spirit of the Wolf buff and God help you if you died somewhere on the way.

    I started playing with the release of Rise of Kunark. This game litterally got me into PC Gaming. I'm currently taking a break from PC Gaming but I remember my time with EQ1 and then later EQ2 often and fondly. I was genuinely disappointed when they canceled Everquest Next. Hopefully in the next decade we can get an EQ3 that takes the best of the franchise and helps bring it into the modern spotlight. Until that happens I'll gladly go back to EQ1 & 2 to relive my memories.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EverQuest
      EverQuest is a 3D fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released on March 16, 1999.[1] It was the second commercially viable MMORPG to be released, after Ultima Online, and the first *commercially successful* MMORPG to employ a three-dimensional game engine.

    • @Ironbuket
      @Ironbuket 7 лет назад

      I didnt realise that Meridian 59 was not considered successful. 12000 people paying a subscription seems pretty good. EQ and OU had more but does that make Meridian a failure or just them more successful? A quick web search returns info that implies Meridian 59 was still a commercial venture until 2009. If we steer away from wikipedia for a second and look at other sources, we find things like this: (from mmorpg.com) 'Meridian 59 was, in fact, the first commercial 3d MMORPG.'

      There are still a few servers with a good sized population, I'm going to do a video about it this weekend actually. However there are servers that are in desperate need of being merged with other low populated servers. A trick some people do is play on the Test server as it gives you access as if you had a subscription so you could try it out.
      If you do find you like it you can continue there or I'd suggest the Firiona Vie server which has a high population, and a fun rule set different from most of Everquest were almost all items are tradeable allowing for upgrades to be passed around and some fun weapons at low levels which with were never intended to be in the hands of lvl 1's.

    I kept scrolling through comments for the Time-Lock Progression Severs and saw no one mentioned them. those are a fun way to revisit the game and new servers starting from vanilla seem to pop up frequently! I was afforded the opportunity to play an Ogre Warrior for a few months before real life required more attention just last year. I raided with a fun guild through the original zones, Kunark, Scars of Velious, and some of the Shadows of Luclin, from that point I had to quit, but the guild is going through Planes of Power and awaiting Gates of Discord. A subscription is required but, there are ways to continue for free to keep playing the TLP servers. Lots of fun!

    i started with eq2 and all the eq1 veteran stories would push me away from it, plus i felt like the mechanics would be too retro for my taste. started playing last year just to give it a shot and found the most well refined mmo experience ive ever had. what it lacks in graphics, it makes up for in refinement. there's such a great level of care taken in the creation of this game and you can tell it every second from reading the loading screens or talking to NPCs. i wish i had more time to sink into eq1 or atleast found it back when i was getting into MMOs because it really is a great experience

    The graphics in this video make the game and characters look much better than they do on mine. It seems very bright, sharp, and the shadow setting almost look like cell-shaded art designs.
    Is it just that new zones and armor look good, or are you using some specific settings?

    • @NerdNavigator
      @NerdNavigator  7 лет назад

      I have shadows turned on, I assume most people turn them off, that's what gives it the cell shaded look. at 4:55 in the video I turned them off because they were doing weird things to the dragon, but you can see the cell shady-ness on my back goes away compared to 4:44.

    I would like to ask if you know of any recent or upcoming MMOs that absolutely requires grouping, punishes the hell out of you if you make a mistake, doesn't' have any instancing, isn't a theme park, and is in the fantasy or steampunk genre? Yes I know EVE and P1999 check almost all of my boxes and I do like both. However I would really like to find something recent in the listed genres. While the Instancing and theme park nature are not as important the grouping and punishing nature are must haves for me.

    I played this from 2001 - 2008 almost non-stop! I remember being 12 years old when I started playing and man was I hooked! I've been on and off since then, but man the feeling the game gives you is unreal compared to any other game I've ever played. This game will always be my top favorite game despite the animations and graphics being a bit outdated compared to other rich colorful games. It still has the most content and enough things to keep you occupied no other game compares to it. Also what's funny about this video right off the bat I remember the guy Telkiney I was good friends with him, and I think he still plays. I see Knights Of Infinity running around Firiona Vie server still. If anyone watches this and still plays look me up because I'm going to be playing again very soon. I used to be on the Luclin server back when Township Rebellion and Cestus Dei were around and were the top guilds for their time. I now play on the Firiona Vie server and I main a rogue named Doomshank. Hit me up anytime you see me on and I will help you with whatever you need.

    I played EQ back in the day, and I went back a few time and play a few hours, I don't want to pay 20 to skip to lev 65, but I wish they had a poition, that gave you 1000 percent ex till lev 40, so you could drink it and go up 5 lev in like 2 hours, till lev 40, so that way you still feel like you lev your self, instead of skiping, or spending 300 hours just to get to a higher lev.

    Played from 99-06. I cant even describe the first couple years of EverQuest because it was so amazing in so many ways. The co-dependency of others forced the communities to grow together, and apart(raid rotations anyone?), in ways you just don't see in games today. I feel lucky to have played it as I don't think the first couple years are something that can be recreated due to all the factors that came together to create that magic.

    So is it just the dungeons and raids that aren't solo friendly, or is the whole game this way?

    • @NerdNavigator
      @NerdNavigator  7 лет назад

      They added Mercenaries that allow pretty much anyone to solo or as the coined term goes if you use a Merc: "Molo" as its like having your own personal healer. Some classes don't really need a merc, such as pet classes. And at lower levels with really good gear one doesn't completely need a group. But groups are really good for more efficent killing, and you receive an xp bonus while in one. Generally you can play how you want to, just there are benefits to being in a group.
      Its a bit unlike games such as World of Warcraft where most people almost exclusively solo for leveling and then only group for the loot in dungeons and raids. Encounters as a solo player if its just 1 mob can be fine, but if you get an add or something, you are likely in trouble unless you have a merc or group
      Can you do that in EQ? yes. But its more efficient with a group (haha I feel like I'm just repeating the same statements now so I'll end it here)

    Nice video! I gave the game up after Call of the Forsaken launched and it was so shallow for an expansion. So it has been a few years since I played. I wish Daybreak would sell off the franchise to a company that really wanted to use the brand to make EQ3, true to the original roots.

  • @DwightStifler09
    @DwightStifler09 7 лет назад

    Great review! In my opinion, the reason EQ has lasted (coming from a player since 1999) is because of the game play style. No other game has the same battle system, the same feel to it that nothing else provides. I've played many games and still to this day go back to EQ for that reason. Nostalgia is one of the greatest things while in game, as well as experiencing the new content. A real old school EQ player can start a new character and know how to play the game the way it was intended.
    You can always get that old hardcore feel if you know what you're doing. That, for me, is why EQ is one of the greatest games ever.

Met some really cool people and had a good raiding guild. I remember keying for Plane of Time and that first Quarm kill. Then there were like 2 more expansions and I remember killing this dragon in a cave.
    Fun times were raiding that giant castle and killing the giants, the third expansion (Scars of Velious?). The one giant was super tough, but dropped excellent gear.

    What I loved about EQ was that you didn't do Quests to level up, you fought mobs and interacted with people in groups killing to get EXP... you did quests to get items. Unlike most MMOs now where you have to pray to the RNG gods to get your desired items.

    I still have my beta 1 cd-rom with a handwritten label done in marker pen, probably by Brad McQuaid because he was handling the beta program I think. I played over 10 years of retail, and my guild did everything but Sleeper which got done before we had the ability. We had never seen anything like Norrath before, to us the graphics were incredible. Fast forward to 2020. My Enchanter still exists on Drinal, but I haven't logged in since 2018, and then only to say hi to some old friends. EQ is basically dead, it has some pockets of player groups still doing stuff, but its nowhere near what it was in 2005, for example. I have memories of in-game experiences which have never been surpassed, not even by World of Warcraft. Just biding my time waiting on Pantheon now.

    Everquest didn't use "holy trinity", it used a Quintet when it was in it's prime (Kunark through Planes of Power and a few xpacs after)... Puller, Crowd Control, Tank, Healer, DPS. People always forget how crazy important the puller was in the older game, an enchanter or bard couldn't CC/Mez a pack of 6 and survive (due to resists on area mez, crazy high agro on those types of spells, ect)

    • @NerdNavigator
      @NerdNavigator  7 лет назад

    I remember way way back when I saw this at a Walmart, and there was some kind of special on EverQuest, where you could get like 3 sets or something, for like super cheap. So I bought it, got home and noticed on the instructions that the game required cable internet. All I had back then was 56k dial up, so I took the 3 set thing back, unopened, and remember how mad I was that a game required an internet connection. So long story short, I never got the chance to play EverQuest. It looked cool tho.

    I agree with what you said about the graphic engine. DBG won't invest ressources now tu upgrade again the graphic motor, but on the other hand with the success of the progression servers, I'm not sure people actually would want a new graphic overhaul - they prefer the old models and the 1999 "look"...

      It is criminally negligent imo how they have basically abandoned this game. Ever since the company got sold there was a glimmer of hope that maybe some money would be invested but it looks increasingly like we will have to wait until Pantheon or another group of old school MMO developers who are not afraid to use modern UI /graphics and animations come up with a new title.

      No, EQ doesn't have flying mounts like in WoW where you can actually fly Up. But levitation has been a staple of the game and if you can run up a high point you can float at that height for a while before you eventually float down. Thats why if you see in the video I occasionally will run up a wall. That's me just trying to gain altitude.

    I played EQ for over 8.5 yrs. Even made the top SK on the Fennin- Ro server back in the day around Seeds. Played up until just before Mirrors and officially retired. The group/social aspect of the game is long gone unless you are in a very active Raiding Guild and can get into one of the "niches" that might have an open spot. The joys of pick up groups and chatting with new people as you passed time doing quests and farming named camps just aren't there anymore. You can't solo much so unless you can learn to multi-box, you get nothing done. 100 DEF SK Main, retired from Bertoxx.
