Happy frugal Friday Kate & KSquad 🌼 I'm a straddler too 😂 Walking is my thinking time 🤔💡😊 Yes please to seperate video for budget per quarter with an idea for a playlist for each quarter Q1JFM Q2AMJ Q3JAS Q4OND. Grow the gap, the bigger the better 🌱
You are glowing Kate. That sweater is adorable and the colour is spot on for you. Thanks for all you do for this community... your encouragement and enthusiasm are so motivating. Hi Kaden!!! 👋
We converted to as little plastic and a preponderance of glass several years ago. My food storage is currently a mix of repurposed plastic food containers, repurposed glass food containers, some glass picked up at the thrift store, and glass canning jars. Price wise, I was late to the thrift stores for glass food storage containers then came across 6pk, 2qt Ball canning jars for $15.99 in early summer '23; they had been running $19.99. My thrift store max been $2 to $2.50 each. $2.67/ each loosened my tight grip of dollars and I only wished I had done it sooner. I did end up buying a second box for a total of 12 jars. By golly they even match and look pretty good among the thrift store glass with thier mushrooms, geese, and sunflowers. - We have a few efforts underway but I will be keeping my eye out for additional jars this year; maybe some 1 quarts too.
After we had an ant problem, we had a company come that sprayed orange oil. Ever since, at the first sign of them (even if I just see them gathering outside), I spray the perimeter of my place plus windowsills with an air freshener made of orange oil and it's kept them away!!
I am going to wear out all the spring/summer clothes I already have and challenge myself not to buy anything new/replace anything until next spring/summer. I've already been tempted by some of the new stuff hitting the sites but I know none of it will really fit me well anyway (I'm 4'11") and therefore end up making me wish I had just saved the money instead.
My daughter and I went for a short walk yesterday and worked on a Bible verse she needed to memorize for a goal she has. It was freezing so we cut it a little short, but it really made us feel good after we got in and warmed up.
Generation X here as well, we rock! I love outdoor walks. I agree that good food storage containers are the best! I use Rubbermaid Brilliance, I have three sets! They look great, and they work much better than their traditional kind. Thank you for the video. I appreciate your positive and grateful disposition, it's encouraging!
Gen X here also I ❤ walking outdoors. I definitely use food containers I use OXO I get them @ TJ Maxx/Homegoods. We would be over run w/ ants 🐜 if a crumb was left. I even put spaghetti noodles in a container. Great video. Hi Kaden 😊❤😊 headed to the beach for a week
The first 20 seconds with your cat in the video omgosh!!! 😄🥰 & I love the idea of thinking April, May, June, three months at a time budgeting thank you!!
For living below my means this spring I going to use the craft supplies I already have to do a sewing project and challenge myself to make do or do without. 😊
Haha! I shared a reel on IG yesterday of someone being shocked that cell phones are in a museum and I thought to myself, try being older than the technology. 😂😂😂
(Abby typing) I am older than you are and so I also graduated with diplomas from both the Old School and the New School along with some electives from Hard Knocks. For the Spring I am taking some money that I saved from my grocery budget category and reinvesting it into gardening supplies. I am using smaller planters and plots to make it easier to maintain healthy plants while working second shift . Raising even a few mixed greens can save you a lot and help you avoid panicking due to scary lettuce recall notices.
Put on capris today for the first time this year on our walk. Pacific Northwest girl here. Not sure a mom of three pushing a stroller fits in the “hot” girl walk category 😂 but love soaking up the sun while exercising!
Thank you for the video! Love them idea of the hot girl walk. This season I'm decluttering and with that being very mindful of what i bring into the house. Hopefully it will help the wallet as well as the house.
PLEASE NOTE! If you are going walking/running (especially the way it is now) be aware of who is around you and carry personal protection. And be comfortable handling whatever personal protection you use.
Funny you mention ants…. I went into my kitchen this morning and lo and behold there were some tiny little ants on my counter. And yesterday I had 3 flies invade my kitchen. It’s time to go to war.
Item 4 of our 2024 Big Ticket Items is a log splitter, weve done better than anticipated/ feared, and im projecting we will have that by the end of April. Item 5 is a little pricier and that budgetary die has been cast for second quarter.
Yay to have Kaden do a cameo! Love it! He’s getting so grown up! You look amazing in that blue. Kate. And it seems like that wedding time with your friends did you good; you are especially vibrant today! I love the idea of figuring out my budget for a quarter. I’ll work on that! Hugs from Utah!
An inexpensive hack to keep those pesky ants away, 50/50 water and distilled white vinegar for mopping and cleaning your counters. I keep the cats away til it dries (they don't like it) but cleaning once a week with it I have not had an ant issue in years 😊
Love the "Hot Girl Walks!!" Going to try me some! Will share that "Terro" is a great way to deal with any ants...it's cheap and works. Ants eat it and take it to their nests, so it takes longer to work, but worth a try if you get "visitors."
Yes. I bought a small bottle in 2000 after moving to a new house. We are invaded periodically, but a few drops in pieces of foil along the trail they make and they are gone till the next season. The terror is half gone and discolored and thick but still works fine. Main ingredient is boric acid.
First of all, your son is PRECIOUS!! Secondly, yes, would love to see a video on how you budget! Also, any apps you like that help with budgeting would be greatly appreciated!
Great video Kate, really helpful, yes please for the ‘quarterly planning vid’, i would find that helpful, especially now that I have wrapped my head around the ‘budget buffer’ stuff, thank you for your link via Insta my message. God bless you for replying! I think I have figured the BB out, and the quarterly planning sounds like it would add an extra layer of understanding for me. ❤
I am pretty good at budgeting, however I'm finding the ever increasing grocery prices are putting a crimp in my budget. Trying to decide how much of an increase to plan for in the coming months. My auto insurance went up too, its due in April. Use a sinking fund for auto insurance, gonna have to bump up saving ahead for that too. One last thing - cash flowing a new to me car. I have $18,000 saved up - debating holding off a little and saving a couple thousand more? My car still runs fine but she is 22 years old. Experiencing a little sticker shock for buying a used car. Live a pretty frugal life now, going to have to get more creative pinching dollar bills :-).
Quarter 2. Free events. Repurposing. Whatever you can to start paying rent in advance. Did this in quarter 1 - April rent. Paid. May rent. Paid. Working towards June. Keep it up for quarter 3!
I grew up being told my class was Gen X. In the past several years, whomever is in charge of naming generations moved the years and I’m supposedly an “elder” millennial. Also, Pulto was downgraded and is no longer considered a planet. I don’t approve of either change. 😑
April, May, and June, are going to be the highest spending months this year for me. I have a Sinking Fund for each month and, will probably have to use some of my savings for them. I thought it was funny that you mentioned those months in your video.💰💸🏧😊
I'll be having a no spend Apr as i try to pay off my car and a loan early this quarter (both due nov). Then, from next quarter, it's starting to save for the first time in my life! Emergency fund is on the horizon finally...thanks for the continued inspiration 👍🇬🇧
This quarter will hit me with additional yard costs and graduation gifts. Probably need to get my grill ready for cook out season. June costs a bit more with no school so we do more activities. And prepping for back to school shopping!
We're not going on a vacation this year and honestly, for me...the planner of family vacations, it's a welcome vacation from planning for vacation. We plan to ramp up the fun at home and make a few day trips, foraging trips, meals out, etc. for breaks along the way. Also, we've got at least two debts in our cross hairs to be paid off third quarter...woot!
Love your videos and never heard of "quarter budgeting" since I’ve just started budgeting at the beginning of this year. I’d love for you to create a video on doing this since I also do better with short term goals. Thanks for such great tips!
I remember dad who was born in 1925 would have a coin purse and he would use those coins to make phone calls at the public telephone box as in those days mom and dad could not afford a phone at home
When you talked about the ants coming in. All I can think of was that verse as a kid as the ants come marching in 😂 I definitely need to work on the taking care of myself. I may try that hot girl walk. Yes please do a video on how to budget for the next quarter. Have a great weekend!
Yes, yes, yes, and yes! Yes to walking: I'm in a walking club that walks over two miles each Friday. Yes to dancing: I'm in a weekly line dancing class. Yes, to food safe containers: I love reusable glass jars and my beloved tupperware. And yes to quarterly planning: it certainly helps to have funds ready to meet anticipated expenses. Wonderful ideas, Kate, as usual!
PS. Second quarter planning for me also meant timing my deposits to make sure rent money was available on time. I want to avoid late fees and NSF charges.
Great tips Kate! I too like to have quarterly budgets set, checked and in place. There is a huge satisfaction in knowing you have completed or closed out one quarter budget successfully and start fresh with the next! 😊
Those ants leave a pheromone trail behind them. For the little guys, rubbing alcohol seems to disrupt the pheromone trail better than most items. I used to wipe down counters once a week, incoming pipes under the sinks and behind the toilet once a week or two, and the interiors of cupboards once seen. Depending, I used to wash food containers and cans with way watered down automotive window washing fluid. (ADDED: Over the past 18 months we've picked up all sorts of hsnd sanitizer for between free and hundredths of pennies on the dollar. We are using it as a rubbing alcohol alternative and sometimes as a alternative cleaner/ degreaser.) Its been a while since I've lived with an ant problem but, Simple Green may work too; buy concentrate on tne summer car care sales, by the gallon at hardware stores after scoping out prices (can vary store to store by a LOT), and end of summer clearance/ sale at hardware stores. Simple Green seems to kill or deter all sorts of bugs. Do a spritz with a 10% to 25% mix on bedding and outdoors where pets ly as an attempt at flea control too; for bedding, let dry for 12-24 hours then wash with a kiss of anti bacterial soap.
I love your videos! Not using any of my credit cards until they are paid off by Sept 2024. And I’m putting $100 each pay check into my Sofi account so that when Christmas rolls around I’ll pay for gifts straight from that instead of using credit cards!
Baby boomer here, I missed the transfer of paper based work to techie based work. So sometimes I do need help from husband or children. I use Kilner jars or cheaper versions from IKEA. We love to 9:13 dance too, husband, adult daughter and I are folk and Scottish Country Dancers. A club night costs £3 per person, so that is 2x per week and then a ceilidh for about £10 per person on a Saturday. So £32 per week on a fun, social activity which is also good for the brain and body.
Thanks Kate. You are so right about the 12 weeks/3 months mindset, makes things so much easier. This will be a great budgeting season. Already crushed the 1st quarter and now onto the 2nd with that same drive and determination. #Ksquad
I can strongly recommend Ant Stop bait stations. We used to get ants in the kitchen at work. Pest Control couldn't do much as it was a kitchen. We used one ant station - ants gone!!! 🐜 They used to crawl over the benches when trying to make a cup of tea!!
Great Video! I am looking forward to some hot walks to the mail box, starting today. I decided to take my CPP a bit early, I am 64. (Canada's equivelant of SS). I am going to keep working and invest it. Hugs to Kaden.
Yesterday I bought food, lot of meats, vegetables, etc and today because I didn't pack my lunch,I had to look for something to buy. I found myself in pain, knowing how much food I have at home and all the meal prep that I will make, and so I just bought something worth 4,instead of 10,and even my hunger went away😂
This is the last of the 12 weeks. So I decided to save 15% of my cheque this mong(march). I listen to Dave Ramsey 7 steps to saving money very informational. Took a few days of for myself so I could give July place a deep clean, get my income tax done, go to Saskatoon, and get my MrI done all that four day holiday for myself. I've been very productive.
(Abby typing) Also I used the peppermint oil and dish soap method to wash away ant trails and also sprayed it in areas that spiders tend to hang out. It does not kill spiders just repels them. All my various bulk stuff is either in mylar bags in buckets or in better home and gardens flip-tite containers. I love these container as they are wide enough to use a measuring cup as a scoop and can be opened or closed with one hand.
@KateKaden he really is. I remember watching your videos heavily in 2020 and he was just a wee little thing. It's been so cool to watch him grow. The k-squad isn't just a squad it's like a little family ❤️❤️
I’m grateful for your encouragement, Kate! 20k debt relieved since January 1st…. 💚💚💚🙏🏻
What!?! This is AMMMMAZINGGG!!! I am so so so proud of you🙌🤩🎉
Awesome!!!!keep it up
Congratulations that's totally awesome 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yes please!!! A next quarter video would be awesome!
I love to walk alone or with friends. But when you walk alone, it's faster and more mindful

Ha! I'm from the dinosaur age. We walked too. Then the wheel was invented...
Lots of wheels around now but I still walk.😊

Heck, I remember sitting on Abraham Lincoln's lap. Or did he sit on mine? 😄

She's so sweet! Love that girl:) She's a super snuggly kitty:)
For living below my means this spring I going to use the craft supplies I already have to do a sewing project and challenge myself to make do or do without. 😊
Sprinkle cinnamon where the ants come in and along their trails. Works likes a charm!
Thank you so much! I will do this!
Haha! I shared a reel on IG yesterday of someone being shocked that cell phones are in a museum and I thought to myself, try being older than the technology. 😂😂😂
I remember when you could get extra long cords on the land line phone - wow - almost as good as wireless lol.

I'd like to see how you budget for a quarter and put a name to every dollar.
Each month, I get closer to giving every dollar a name! I think I'll be there by the end of April. Thank you, Kate!
Yasss! You’re on your way! You’ve got this🙏❤️
Put on capris today for the first time this year on our walk. Pacific Northwest girl here. Not sure a mom of three pushing a stroller fits in the “hot” girl walk category 😂 but love soaking up the sun while exercising!
SUPER HOT!:):) 😊😎
Happy frugal Friday. Today I am for the first time actually using my discount card at IKEA.
Ooooh IKEA !!!!❤️
@@KateKaden I'm mostly in it for the meatballs, which I get for lower price on a Friday with my IKEA family card.

So sad we have to worry about this😢
My personal protection is a 75 lb pit bull. Not very frugal to maintain tho.
My granddaughter’s first birthday is in May. So I have to budget for a trip to Tennessee plus a 🎁
Yasss! Happy early birthday to her 🎉❤️
Funny you mention ants…. I went into my kitchen this morning and lo and behold there were some tiny little ants on my counter. And yesterday I had 3 flies invade my kitchen. It’s time to go to war.

Yes. I bought a small bottle in 2000 after moving to a new house. We are invaded periodically, but a few drops in pieces of foil along the trail they make and they are gone till the next season. The terror is half gone and discolored and thick but still works fine. Main ingredient is boric acid.

Hi Kaden! You are looking more grown up this spring :-).
I love those cereal containers! Bonus feature you can keep track of how much you have AND they fit better inside cabinets!
take care of your teeth you guys tooth infections hurt
So true!
Listening to you as we are cleaning our dads home to put on market. Great tips. Take care❤
I am walking outside while listening to this. Intermittent fasting also is a great way to save money on groceries.

A quarter at a time budget might actually work for me! Would love to hear more
I like to open the drapes and curtains to let the sun in and avoid turning on the lights.

@KateKaden he really is. I remember watching your videos heavily in 2020 and he was just a wee little thing. It's been so cool to watch him grow. The k-squad isn't just a squad it's like a little family ❤️❤️
