- Sheffield engineering specialist SCX has been selected as the Retractable Pitch Supplier for the ground-breaking new stadium of Tottenham Hotspur.
The company’s expertise is being harnessed to produce a grass pitch that sits directly above an artificial surface, making the Premier League club’s stadium the first of its kind in the UK to have two pitches inside the same bowl in order to create a truly world-class multi-use venue.
The fully retractable grass surface will be used for football matches whilst the artificial pitch underneath will be used for NFL matches, music concerts and a range of other events, in order to protect the integrity of both playing surfaces.

Whats the odds on the pitch malfunctioning at some point in the future? Acutally be quite funny to see half the pitch suddenly collapse mid game, -all players/staff being safe of course.

Once it's in position it ain't going nowhere so no chance of any chunks dropping down. There's a remote possibility that the system could malfunction between matches so a premier league match has to be played on the NFL surface or vice versa.
Its technically 3 big cars, and only If someone presses on the gas. It will move.
If THFC sign a maintenance contract with SCX then you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be a liability clause should the hydraulics fail. In any case if the Maintenance program is effect (and there is no reason to think it isn't) then there will be alternative power sources to compensate. Veltins Stadium (Schalke 04 FC) have had the same setup installed in their stadium for a while. SCX built Veltins stadium retractable pitch as well. There isn't any information on the hydraulics failing during a game or during the installing and retracting operations of their 3 piece pitch. A Risk Assessment/Concept Design Meeting prior to installation is supposed to address such things as operational failures.
White Hart Lane will always be an indelible fixture in my heart. The name rings true to English football as it has done for decades synonymous with professionalism. What will this new name of Federal Express signify? Akin to a world stage with the USA ready to rocket to the skies, land in our heartland and deliver a package of prominence pertaining to pricing out the previous plans of the fans, taking away from the significance of our solid sacred soil.
Naming rights can be a necessary evil for stadiums. £20m a year for 20 years can go pretty far in offsetting the costs associated with the care and operation of a modern sporting venue. a little trick some teams use is "Sponsor name' at 'historic name", such as the Denver Broncos, whose stadium has been "Sponsor' at Mile High" after their old stadium, until their last sponsor went bankrupt. In this case it could be "Fedex Grounds at White Hart Lane" or something to that effect.

Looks fancy and impressive, the main concern should be the more steps needed to get right the more likely a mistake will be done.
Maybe the "grass" hits harder at the locations closest to the beams.
Maybe a player tackle hitting one of the joined sections and scrat off more than is the normal
maybe a freekick is given and the ball keep tilting towards a fold line
maybe there'll be an eccho from the hollow parts underneath the pitch
so many things to get right, but new technology is fascinating to see develop
maybe the trays/rails warp over time due to extremes of temperature. even just an inch.
maybe on a wet day a player does a slide tackle on muddy ground and his foot makes contact with metal edge of tray underneath.
maybe the grass along the edges of the trays becomes worn and turns brown.

It was the deal made with Tottenham and the NFL. It's an American football stadium first and a football pitch second. Which will make Tottenham football club the richest club once the NFL start to fly out to play every fortnight for a league game! It's the first NFL official pitch in Europe. Clever deal by the owners

Die Groene nah, most teams use Astro turf, playing on real grass tears up the real grass and would have to be replaced every game, and Astro turf doesn't affect the game like it would in footy. My NFL team uses real grass tho.
They use field turf. Field turf causes far more injury than real grass, so the NFL is definitely paying a price with the artificial surface.

15 out of 31 NFL main stadiums use Artificial Turf according to Wikipedia and 3 of them use Hybrid turf.

Plausible futuristic design for our new home. Keen to see how it pans out. However, what's the guarantee that the players will be comfortable/confident to play on a pitch they feel is held together by rails and as such won't suffer mechanical breakdowns after a while?

I believe the grass will still be maintained with artificial light and water when retracted under the stadium, which would be difficult or near to impossible, if it was the lower permanent pitch.
