- 5.6.2018 - #HearPYP and special Guest Conductor Huw Edwards performing Gerald Finzi's Clarinet Concerto, with soloist David Hattner, in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
The performance celebrated PYP Musical Director David Hattner’s tenth anniversary with the orchestra.
Edwards served as PYP’s Musical Director from 1995 to 2002. He is now in his 15th season as Music Director of the Olympia Symphony Orchestra in Washington State-currently celebrating its 65th anniversary year.
Hearing is believing! Portland’s locally-grown orchestra returns for a landmark 95th season with an invigorating new lineup of performances in the historic Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Astonishing audiences since 1925, Portland Youth Philharmonic will soon be the first U.S. organization for young musicians to reach its 100th anniversary.

What a hauntingly beautiful piece of music. The orchestra plays with such maturity and David Hattner's performance is spellbinding.
What a wonderful performance!
Splendid playing from the Youth Orchestra (AND the soloist of course!)
It is a very interesting piece! Bravo!
Thank you!
Excellent !
Cannot find enough words to express how beautiful this execution is, both from the soloist and the orchestra. Greetings from someone who used to be a clarinettist. Glad to hear this music.
A haunting concerto that I find deeply moving every time I hear it
Lovely to hear this. But beware: weirdly, the titles at the start give totally the wrong dates for Finzi's life. It was short, but not that short, and later. The real dates are 1901-1956.
Wow, great catch. And hard to fix!
Seems to have mixed him up with George Butterworth!
My brother’s in the bass section.
Yes Finzi more reflective and moving I think
Plus eins
I don't know why I thought his name was Gerald Finzi
But, it is. I play clarent too, but not nearly this well, and I stopped playing over 40 years ago. Let this be an inspiration to me. Ain't it bootieful?!!
Arguably more interesting than Bike by Pink Floyd when Roger 'Syd' Barrett was the front man.
Really, a great concert, but hhe cello one is more expansive.
