  • I move on to Jack’s second album as Meat Beat Manifesto with 99%. I also discuss the singles he released around the same time, as well as remixing work he did for Coil, Shamen, and Orbital.

yes, yes and yes, this was a landmark, i had been into the dance/rave scene for a few years ahead of this coming out but my head was completely turned with the sonics of Radio Babylon (and Helter Skelter). I had it on a ropey bootleg for years before getting a proper copy. Definitely in my top 5 tunes of all time, no question.

I live in Rochester, New York, and have seen MBM every time they played here. But during the mid-90s, there was one special show that I'll never forget. I was working as a software engineer for Applied Research and Technology, a company that made digital and analog effect units for musicians. We had recently came out with an effect unit called the SGX-2000. The thing about that unit that made it unique from the competition was that it had two diagonal lines of LEDs that show what effects were active. MBM goes on stage through all the smoke and lighting effects, my attention turns to Johnny Stephens' rack. And there, I see it... the SGX-2000. What a few months prior was just a bunch of circuit boards on my desk was there, up on stage.
Absolutely nobody but me cared. But when my favorite band was up there on stage and a piece of electronics I helped bring life to is sitting in a rack, I was ecstatic.

That's awesome, man. I have so many MBM concert stories -- like you, I've seen Jack every time he has come to town. Which is probably 10 times, I think? Pretty much every tour since 99%.

Wow! Cool video. MBM is far and away my favorite band of all time and 99% is my favorite album of all time. I bought it the day after I graduated high school in 1991. It blew my mind and I have never recovered from the experience. It is in a class all its own. So gritty and raw and intense. So layered. I love the distortion and the lyrics. The phat beats. It's amazing. Think Fast might be the most underrated song I can think of. Hello Teenage America is an anthem of the time. And yeah that Helter Skelter/Radio Babylon record was a game changer. I didn't have any of the 12"s before I heard 99% so I had none of your complaints about those songs being on there. Besides it was the full LP and those were singles. I love it all. That bass riff on Paradise Now though! The live shows were amazing in the 90s. The fact that they truly played live with real drums and guitars as well as Jack's absurdly badass sampler as an electronica band was so different from the techno bands at the time. Every show was a little different from night to night. Jack is insanely talented and really cool dude.

Thanks for your comment! Yeah man, it looks like we had a very similar experience. 99% is in a world all its own. To this day I can't think of an album that sounds anything like it. Many times copied, but never equaled.

Oh man, this is such a big album for me. I’ve owned it on cassette, CD, and more recently vinyl. My pressing is from Belgium. It was a discogs score from a seller in Germany. Anyway, love the content and the whole series of Meat Beat videos have been very educational. Gotta go slap this one on the turntable now!

My introduction to MBM was when they opened for NIN. Knew absolutely nothing about them except they were on WaxTrax which meant it had to be good. Totally fogged out First Avenue and opened with Now. Could not see them but became aware of fins going across the ceiling on the scaffolding. Blew NIN out of the water. Fan from there on!!

@@thestangle1 Yep, I have. Honestly, I don’t like NIN. I liked PHM when it first came out, but I lost interest when the second album came out. Reznor turned into a hair metal 90s version of cock rock garbage at that point, I couldn’t stand it. I tend to like his instrumental/ambient stuff, like his soundtracks for example. But other than that, not a fan.
