Mary Wayte (Bradburne) is a neighbor now and is a wonderful, warm person... you have to draw it out of her that she was not only in the Olympics but won 2 gold medals. Lovely person. Congrats, Mary!

Her family was very close to our family on Mercer Island. I have 8mm video of her with my lil brother back in the day as her sister was his babysitter. She swam with me for a few years and her dad Mike and my dad were great friends. I was so excited to see her win this race..

As a kid swimmer, I just remember thinking how cool it was that somebody from the Seattle area was an Olympic Gold Medalist. Mary also swam great in Seoul four years later. Just awesome. Enjoyed her commentary during the Barcelona '92 Games as well.

I was happy that Sippy Woodhead finally won a medal, but I was hoping it would have been gold. Also, it sucks that the 4x200 relay wasn't on the women's schedule at that time. With Wayte and Woodhead they would have dominated.

They were neighbors of ours on Mercer Island I remember watching this on tv and yelling go Mary. Our families spent time together back in the day..

Very cool Jim Lampley, a nice change from calling boxing matches. Remember that young broadcasters. Get out of your comfort zone. I E and he'll tell you ( Al Michaels ) his most memorable call is 1980 USA ice hockey. "Do you believe in miracles!" NFL play-by-play zenith.

Swimming has come a long way since then. Here, we see women breathing every 3 to 4 strokes on a 200 free. All that hypoxic stuff was enormously popular with coaches. Virtually no one does this anymore. Even if it may be faster with respect to resistance not to breathe, oxygen is too important not to learn to breathe efficiently EVERY stroke.

Matthew Moon today we see a variation of patterns. Nowadays a swimmer racing on a 100 or 200m may start with 5x1, keep on 4x1, 2x1 before and after flips, etc.

I agree Matt which is why I breathed every stroke in the mile when I swam in the 1992 Olympic

I took my girl friend at the time to see this. I was station in San Diego and she was going to university. I would go out to sea and when I got back I would sneak into her last class and sit in the back and just watch her until I got busted buy the professor.

Such typical single-focus American commentary. We still didn’t find out who came third at the end of the video. USA 1-2 was all that mattered. Disgraceful, and it still occurs 36 years later.
