- Whether you’re in fashion or not, you know what a trench coat is. In this episode, I introduce you to the trench’s original architect-the British luxury fashion house Burberry-and walk you through its many intricacies.
I begin with the inception of the brand, which was rooted in a very practical, universal problem: rain. For most of the 19th century, rainwear was heavy, bulky, and difficult to move in. In 1879, however, Thomas Burberry invented a new lightweight, breathable, weatherproof, and tear-proof fabric called gabardine. The fabric gained widespread acclaim, and during World War I, Burberry used it to design the very first trench coat. Over time, Burberry outerwear became known and loved by people all over the world, and it soon made its way to becoming one of the world’s top luxury fashion brands.
Today, Burberry is worn by the world’s top celebrities, including Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez, and F.K.A. Twigs. But to me, the brand will always be fundamentally democratic in its aesthetic. It works on everyone: babies, kids, old people, young people, people in other countries all over the world… even dogs. It doesn’t really matter how old you are, or where you’re from, you like it. And I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Kate - I ADORE that you’re doing deep dives on fashion houses. Keep them coming! ♥️
❤️❤️❤️
I agree! We love it
my grandmother's burberry trench was worn by my mum, then me and now my teenage daughter. four generations of outdoor wear and it still looks great🌟
🤍
That's great. I got my Dads about 15 years ago. My son now wears them. Also have a Aquascutum
Another episode full of knowledge about fashion..
❤️
These insightful, articulate and easily digestible video segments into iconic fashion pieces is just perfect. And Kate, the way you walk us through the history, significance, and relevance of every item is spell-binding. Keep it coming!
❤️
Can’t wait for the next one! So refreshing to hear from people who actually know and care!
❤️
Thank you for these free Masterclasses; Louis Vuitton, Prada now Burberry. Your channel excites me everytime.
🥰
I’m so engrossed during every episode. Such detail and history. 🙌🏼

Love this! I make my students watch every episode. Thank you Kate.
❤️
Hi Kate! Burberry fashion stylist and client advisor here. The history of Burberry is so rich and deeply rooted in our brand.. it's so amazing and inspiring. Thanks for giving a little snapshot into the history of this amazing brand and what makes our iconic trench coats so perfect to integrate into every wardrobe. And here's a little fun fact for you if you don't know- the equestrian knight was actually designed for Thomas Burberry when he ran a contest for a new logo and that was the winner!
Dear Kate ... you are the 'Lisa Eldridge' in fashion ,!!! Sooo belivable, so much knowledge and passion! And i love learning the roots of fashion, hug warming from switzerland 🇨🇭, Andrea
I love the eye roll when she says "jeans"
Can't wait to find my perfect, vintage Burberry trench!
I actually never knew the exact history of Burberry but how amazing is the story! Just makes me want a trench even more now! And I think that's the thing, it's almost like if you own a Burberry trench, you own a bit of history too and I love that element 💛 thanks for sharing x
❤️
love Kate and her enthusiasm and insight
HELLO FASHION makes me so happy
🥰
You deserve a show your work is thoroughly researched I'm not sure if it's more rich than your charm
Thank you. I am loyal to Burberry (trenches, quilted jackets even puffers and clothing), however, not a fan of the rebrand "TB." Now that I know the history of Thomas Burberry, I am proud to support the brand even as it strays and evolves.
I bought my first Burberry trench 6 years ago and it's one of the best fashion investments I've made! I wear it with everything. And when it's cold outside it keeps you warm and when its hot outside it keeps you cool.
Please keep these videos coming, amazing content ! your knowledge and delivery is out of this world. and that into song is catchy
I love Burberry ! Classic , practical and chic! But I didn't like the new logo !! The original logo is so special , unique and so recognizable! 😍
Thank you for another fascinating look at the history of an iconic designer. I appreciate hearing how challenging it is to sew the collar on these coats. It makes me feel a little better about all times I've had to rip out and resew the collars on jackets and shirts I've made for myself, although they are simpler designs.
I totally know what you mean!
This does take me back. I remember reading in a fashion mag during my teens that you needed three timeless things in your wardrobe. Burberry trench, YSL Smoking & diamond studs.
You are a real gem in the fashion community. Thanks for sharing insight in the fashion history. As always your style is truly impeccable.
Thank you ❤️
LOVEEE....please keep them coming ❤️❤️❤️
I appreciate how you are making videos on the history of these famous fashion brands as I feel like most of the world doesn't knows the history of their work
❤️
I love gabardine, they make me so elegant and practical, and it amazes me to see how from being that a necessity has happened throughout history for different uses to being an important part of fashion 👚🤩😁
Agree!
Kate please do a video for Schiaparelli! And maybe givanchy! I love your content! Super simple and well presented!
❤️
delightfully informative thank you for posting this.will follow you now
All your videos are so interesting! Thank you for this video! 🙏❤️❤️❤️
I love Burberry. I wasn’t able to find my size, as I am very petite, I can buy clothes in kids section, lol. But I noticed that male Burberry sweaters look very cute on me, ha-ha! Like oversized sweater dresses 🥰🥰🥰
I love this Series! Can you make one for YSL? 😍
Love Burberry, they are timeless to me. Practical and elegant clothing that you can immediately identify as being Burberry.
Just found your Chanel and WOW! Can not wait to learn more!!!
I am doing my Masters program in Global History and I love learning about Fashion history! My mother-in-law actually gifted me a Burberry trenchcoat she got from one of her girlfriends in the 70ies and as someone who loves to wear vintage style, but doesn´t have enough money, this is just perfect! She gave me Burberry pants two days ago as well! I am literally in heaven!
❤️
I appreciate how your genuine respect for history and construction comes through. It always helps to learn from someone who really cares about what they're teaching.
❤️
I have two! One is vintage and one is new (one cream coloured and one green). I'm a size 12 and 5'7. They're so flattering and chic! I see Audrey Hepburn and Sienna Miller in these coats and I feel amazing wearing them. Another fantastic episode! Thanks Kate Young, you're the coolest :)
Thank you!!!

i love the history behind fashion brands like this😍 keep them up! Reliving ancient fashion feels rejuvenating. It’s imperative to know and helps absorbs perspicacity. Also‚ it’s great you delved the intricate pieces.
I absolutely love the informative videos about fashion and the iconic brands, its pieces and history!!! 😍 thank you for sharing!
Simply the best, Kate. Good job as always 🥰
❤️
You are so right about the longevity of Burberry pieces. I tend to burn very hot and cold when it comes to clothes - I will wear the shit out of something one year and then bury it in the closet the next year. My only Burberry piece, a knit/melton blazer/cardigan, is a perennial staple that dresses up or down effortlessly and it just makes you look sophisticated without being in-your-face about it. That one never goes into storage.
❤️
Fantastic video. I love learning the history of these brands, thank you for making them 💓
I bought my first Burberry coat in 2014 and it's the best investment ever made 🙌
I was just thinking about buying a new trench coat today, now that is getting colder. Love this episode!!💜 maybe you can also make a video about street style.
May I ask what size you’re wearing the cardigan in? I like the way it’s fitting on you 🙂
