Thanks for doing this video! I went through a lot of waiting and frustration to get my new Boston Whaler 150 Montauk at a premium price. However, after I finally got the boat I quickly forgot about all that. It was totally worth it! In the waning days of the boating season I took my friends and my dad out for fun excursions, I caught my first crabs, and I even saw orca whales up close! I can't wait to see what adventures I will have next year. Life is short - I'm glad I didn't wait.
Yes the prices might be high, but for some people the inflated prices do not matter because we only have so many years to live. If I wait 2-3 years to finally get a boat, thats 2-3 less years that I made memories on the water. Its all relative to what your goals are.
Yea but selling 7k over msrp? For a boat that msrped at 44k? And then the dealer not willing to come down even a penny. Or any kind of incentive. Just one example. NO THANK YOU!
I bought a 1k$ boat (81 glastron ssv 167 with 76 Evinrude 115) and put another 1k$ into it and have been on the lake once and on the river 5 times. No payments and probably the best thing I have ever bought. Sure its not fancy or perfect, but Im on a sandbar with my family drinking a beer instead of sitting at home wishing I had a boat. Besides the motor work (250$) I did everything myself to get this boat water worthy. I tore all the old rotting seats and trim out and built all new stuff. I don't worry about it getting dirty or scratched either. Buy a used boat, fix it up yourself and screw making payments. Its more satisfying when you know you own it, fixed it yourself and don't have to make the payments during the winter.
Thanks captain! This is a million dollar video for all boat buyers. Haters are either boat dealers or COVID noobs who regretted their recent purchases.
Excellent topic; thanks for posting! Whenever the wife and I decide to sell a boat, we refer to the NADA Guide to get the best information on what we should be asking for the boat. This has served us well; very rarely does someone really try to "lowball" us after they learn our logic for pricing the boat. BTW: Last week we sold our 2017 Aqua Patio 259CBD Tri-Toon with a 150 Merc and EZ Loader trailer. Priced it according to NADA and the buyer didn't attempt to negotiate. Yesterday, we ordered a 2022 Barletta Corsa 23U Tri-Toon with a 200 Merc. Looking forward to taking delivery sometime in April/May!
Deapsea5 Thanks for your comment. Most, if not all people buying boats are/were not affected greatly by Covid. I'd never try to low ball a boat deal (unless I am trying to buy the actual boat at the boat show). Good Luck with the Marietta Corsa!
First time boat 🚤 buyer. Bought used bc I can’t afford new. Purchased a 2013 Tahoe Q4i fish and ski which means it came from the factory with a trolling motor, fish finder and front fishing seat which is removable. Boat comes with a nice trailer, Bimini top, and full cover. Bought from a dealer / marina who sold the boat new, have serviced it since new, 1 owner, approximately 130 hours on it. This boat looks new, and dealer is offering a 30 day warranty from first splash 💦. Same boat in another large city 2 hours away was comparable price. Paid approximately $21,000 for it. Bad OR good deal 🤷🏻♂️, but I’ll be on the water this summer. Thanks for your video and info.
I would like to see an update on where statistics and you see the market as well as what inflation and supply and other issues are doing to the market in the next 6 months
I’m recently retired (65) and my watersports days are behind me. But I bought a Yammy with a tower because they are fun to cruise in and will be easier to sell becsuse it’s setup for watersports. I loved my waverunner, but my 212SE is a jetski on steroids. More importantly, the wife loves it. I didn’t test drive my boat, but was confident because it’s a Yamaha. They aren’t going anywhere.
This is good info, but I'm confused about why you keep on referring to the C-19 situation as occurring in early 2019. The C-19 shutdowns and all the mess that followed didn't start happening until early 2020.
Another great video Matt. I got so lucky. Ordered my boat in August 2020. Was told earliest delivery date was mid-April 2021. Boat came in January 2021. I think a previous deal fell through. (2021 Yamaha 212SE) I learned early on, don’t sweat the small stuff, fix it yourself.
Captain Matt the economist, good topic enjoyed it. You are right you work hard enjoy your fruits of your labor but dont stretch yourself too thin.Just sold a 2019 Waverunner and 2021 Sea Doo jet skis for what I bought them for. Now for a pontoon.
On reflection, it shouldn't be surprising that boat manufacturers that were likely working near capacity (to maximize efficiency) wouldn't be able to pump out way more boats when you then add supply chain issues on top. Really nice video. We just ordered a 2022 Tahoe 2150 yesterday with an expected delivery in second week of February. Hopefully that gives those new workers time to improve lol
Thank You. To read what dealers think, but do not say to the customer is most interesting. I have a 24 year-old Sea Ray...Sea Ray dealer said "sayonara" to working on Sea Rays older than year 2000. OK, i pay a premium price for a name and receive no service: Sayonara Sea Ray!" I have recently looked at Cobalt: I go to their boat builder today (March 2022) the base price of the model I am looking at: $99,117.... BEFORE I add one option, BUT/BUT at the bottom of the Cobalt build sheet it reads : Manufacturer's Material Surcharge $7,929.36!!!. Total $108,000!!!! Couldn't the Cobalt Accountant add the upcharge to the MSRP and not blatantly state, "yes. here is the Cobalt cost to chumps." (Perhaps becuase the chump charge changes daily without notice?) So I closed the Cobalt build page. Will I buy a boat in the next 6-12 months? No, I am all full up on crazy right now. Sea Ray under the care of a non-Sea Ray mechanic will continue to float by boat.
I ordered a tritoon in feb 2021 was set for delivery after delays at the end of this month. The paper work came to close on it and it was 30% more and I told them to keep it.
@@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon I found the dealer that took the boat and they marked it up another 20% basically 50% from when i ordered it all said and done.
The market is crazy now! We go our '02 410 Sundancer as a repo 10 years ago and got an amazing deal - the same year boat is now selling for about what we paid 10 years ago, which is unheard of with boat values. We're hoping to step up but will be patient. We'd never sell our boat until we found the right next boat - it could be a few years in this market! Meanwhile we are enjoying the boat life with it! ;)
i bought a new boat recently. the boats i was pricing 15 years ago r fetching nearly the same price currently. at this point in our society, saving at waiting doesn't pay
Was only now able to watch the video. I agree that it's not smart to watch the currency stats, but rather the units built stats. However, respectfully, Matt I think your guess (as good as mine) reflects too much on the near history. Manufacturers are not able to ramp up their production at light speed. Yet, the current demand for boats attracts a ton of investor money to the business. My guess is, we are going to see a huge surge in production numbers in the following years. Also, I agree that if you are without a boat, you should get one right now. Waiting for a few years (to save some money) is not worth wasting those years without boating!! :) Very, very good and unbiased video!!
This is happening to all manufacturers a lot of the work force that do the quality work are getting ready to retire. The younger work force dont want too work they don't care about quality . The just want too know how much an hour and when do they get paid. Not all of them but most of them.
We broke our key west Bimini top and we couldn’t find anything to replace it. We went to our local shop they do all our work on our engine. They happen to be a key west dealership. We ordered just the top. Key west tried to charge them 3,000 to ship it so we waited till they got a shipment and ordered it like an extra one for a customer who ordered a 1720 then they took 3 months to ship it. Crazy!! We can’t even have them sell our 1720 to trade it in for a newer boat because I can sell it used for 28,000 2014 key west sportsman they said they can’t give us more then 15,000 cause that’s what they ate allowed to buy it used it’s insane. The new 1720 is now 39,000 new they were 27,000 before covid for a new one 10 k mark up!?!?
Excellent video as always Capt. Matt, thanks for this. Perhaps to solve the supply chain issue, they should simply just build more container ships...hey wait....:)

It’s not like the manufacturer is going to lower their online price from one year to the next. The price will never go down. At best, a few more incentives or sales events. Quality control right now is horrible. Over paying for a QC riddled boat is a concern. But here’s the real issue. Buyers today want instant gratification. They will pay 10k more and just take out a longer loan. Boat manufacturers have taken notice and realize these are emotional buyers not rational buyers. Boats are toys and buyers “MUST” have one now! Buyers must take little Jonny fishing today because life is short and memories are “priceless”. When buyers use this type of logic boat manufacturers will increase prices. It’s like taking advantage of the emotionally challenged. Remember, the day you buy and the day you sell are the two best days. After owning 5 boats, I assure you this is true.
