I live in San Bernardino currently, every now and they I hear this whistle. and I Run to my door (I live across the tracks) and is just Great to see this 4-8-4 in action!
She is just one beautiful engine. Thanks Mike for bringing this machine to video. When I heard that Broadway Limited was bringing it back I brought it. They did a good job. My line of thinking was if you can't get the real thing get the next best thing. Thanks Mike and you to Broadway Ltd.
I happened to hit it really lucky with the traffic on the roads. Fortunately, a major highway parallels the line for most of the trim, which makes chasing the train relatively easy. Thank you!
So me wishing for warmer weather and having an itch for west coast steam have been watching videos like this. Great video, and only hope to be able to chase someday
As of early fall 2019 Santa Fe 3751 is going through another overhaul and is said to maybe completed by this December possibly maybe. I would love that but I'm trying not to jinx it but at least by early 2020 we'll have santa fe 2926 in New Mexico and its even bigger!!!!!!!!
Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions, I really love your documentaries and also not to bug you but I have an idea, the kismet California train crash, made by camerarailfan and Ryan Colorado spring productions
I would really like to see Santa Fe 3751 one day in operation, though I have seen it’s sibling 3759 displayed at a park with a caboose in Kingman, Arizona back in July 5th 2022.
The Metrolink would be for dynamic braking, that steam loco has enough power to pull a freight train, but it doesn't have dynamic brakes. Union Pacific does the same thing, it's so they can stop quickly if needed.
Good old 3751 has to have my favorite steam whistle of all time! I love that 6 chime passenger whistle. Edit: 5:20 Sounds like Ed Dickens whistle call from Union Pacific, did he take control of the old Northern?
Yes he did. First off, it was Amtrak Engineer Bill Stetler from LA to Covina where it had to meet a westbound Metrolink Train at the station and then Ed took the duties for the second half of the trip. He’s been with the crew three times for these trips.
I love that train 3751 as a kid in the nineteen sixties, I stayed with my tio kiko on 5th. St accross from the shops, which is old route 66, my cousin tony and I would walk over mt. Vernon bridge, and climb over the fence and play with the levers, then walk the man tunnels, never knew what methane gas was. The watchful hand of Jesus christ was over us. Seeing 3751 roll towards me at the refurbished san bernardino station was amazing.
Magnificent loco and well videoed. This is one for the archives. Did you have help in getting to the various shooting sites on route or do you have a very fast car?! Whatever, this is one of your best and thanks for posting it.
4:41 The whistle sounds AMAZING here!
Yes. This is the same whistle it's been using since the late 1990's. It's a Santa Fe 6 chime passenger whistle.

Thanks! You gotta see 3751 when it's back up and running.
Mike, every time I see that shot of the steamer passing the Coaster, it's like he's saying hello.
Well, it certainly is the oldest 4-8-4 around now, that's for sure! Thanks!
Thank you!

Very cool I just saw myself at the 5min 47sec mark on this video filming with my phone.
Do you have the video?
The engineer on half of the trip from Covina to San Bernardino is UP Steam Manager Ed Dickens.
Fun video to watch, and glad you captured this piece of history.

I believe that is Ed Dickens at the throttle.
It's quite unique too! Not much else like a giant steam locomotive thundering through town!

Great video, I love this engine.
I love 3751. I don’t know why she’s not world famous like UP 844 or SP 4449. IMO she should be.
Especially since she's the oldest operational 4-8-4 in the U.S.
Possibly next summer, it will make another trip from Los Angeles to San Diego.
Best intro EVER :DD
@talking tom's PC adventure's e certainly
Nice work!
It is a Santa Fe six chime whistle, originally off a 2900 class 4-8-4

That 6 chime is AMAZING
No, they are doing track work on the San Bernardino Sub. I have heard there is some potential for other trips, but nothing solid yet.
They been making outstanding progress! By 2015 they hope to have her tests all finished n hopefully running
4:52 nice 👍
It's unfortunate that they aren't using her original LM-192 whistle. It really sounded good
I agree.
