Note: Some artists ENJOY helping you design a new fursona if you commission them for a ref sheet. Let them have creative integrity over it and tweak it from there. It especially helps if you're friends with the artist because they might understand your choices better. This is exactly how I went about making my second fursona. Commissioned a friend for a ref sheet and let her make the fursona since it was an original species by her and I tweaked it from there. Turned out amazing and she had tons of fun doing it.

I got our first ref sheet made by downloading a few bases and just scribbling on them in MS Paint, as well as a few animal doll makers to try and get an idea of designs/placement, plus a lot of reference pictures for what aspects I wanted emphasised. Our first sona was a fox/cat so we had to make a lot of notes of "this nose, but this snout, but this head structure, etc" lol
My fursona started out as a DND character. A kenku rogue, was really cringy how I gave him a TRAGIC anime backstory and he used to be a rainbow-crow (somehow). But over time I mellowed out and I reflected that in him. Basically he's just how I'd like to act or how I act now. I just think it's cool how a character that you've created can evolve with you as you change overtime. Also crows are just cool yo

Hey, Stormi, I have discussed this on the furry subreddit with someone, so I might as well tell it to you straight: My fursona is Sylvius Zebedee Mawwed, a red thunderfolf (red wolf + thunderbird + red fox) who has the wings of a thunderbird as well as five short fox-like tails in a tail fan and the ability to control the weather to sn extent (which in part comes from my basophobia and lilapsiphobia, respectively.) The part where my concern starts is that our fursonas share similar color schemes, where mine is German Red, cyan, black, and white, as well as some of the lightning bolt markings that were once on the cheeks but have since moved to border the top of the muzzle as part of the "tear streaks" that you see on red wolves. Despite all the differences, I'm still worried that they may be too similar. Thoughts?

My fursona is an original species that I created out of curiosity about how the zodiac signs would look like if they were their own animal. Her name is Malachite and she’s an American tiger Scorpio that has brown fur with black stripes, her arms are dark brown while her fur is a light brown, her mane is a dark brown color and so are her eyes. She has the Scorpio horns from Homestuck, she has a snake hidden in her stripes which goes down her back, you can only see it if she’s standing upright and you’re looking at her from behind, she’s sitting and you’re looking at her from behind, or you’re directly over her when she’s on all four of her legs. She switches between being bipedal and quadrupedal, she’s mostly seen on her back feet and fully clothed from top to bottom, she has hidden spikes that comes out when she’s angry. Her tail stinger is actually bone and can be used as a club. Her mouth is full of sharp teeth and only the two frontal side ones are longer than the others which are fangs. She has a great sense of smell and acute eye sight. Her claws, horns, wing feathers, and teeth can be shed and already replaced by new ones. In her digigrade form, she walks like a raptor and when she’s in her quadruped form, she walks like a tiger mixed with a wolf. She in her platigrade form, she walks like a human but still has animalistic tendencies, and in her regular, semi-partial form, she acts like a human.
I have an oc based off of need for speed who mainly looks like the most wanted m3 gtr He can change his fur pattern so if i want him to resemble Eddie's skyline he can He is called cooper because Ryan cooper was one of the first named nfs protagonists
Very interesting, I can admit I've been struggling with this for a while myself. I think that while complex designs certainly give a "wow" factor, simpler, more natural designs can also look very pleasing to the eye. They're also a bit easier to draw over-and-over too!

My sona is mostly just me (or what I’d want to be at least) as a furry, but with some reference details here and there. She has blue eyes because I have blue eyes and I just like the color blue, she’s a bunny in honor of my pet bunny who passed away, and she has subtle blue diamond markings here and there as an ode to my favorite pokemon, Glaceon :p For over a year I’ve struggled with coming up with a sona but have stuck with her since may of last year and I love her afjdhfh
Another recommendation--Please please please do not skin a copyrighted character to just slap their design on your fursona. It looks bad, isn't original (Someone's already skinned them before you, trust me), and if you ever want it made into a fursuit, most makers will refuse to make it. It's okay to let it be inspired by your favorite character but don't do it to the point where it only resembles them and not you.
I actually forget how I made my fursona Raven the wolf.... it was about a year and half ago when I made her and I guess her design just came to me. She is mostly dark grey with lighter grey also she has a teal hair floof and has purple eyes And I created by second fursona Caelum the Dutch Angel during Latin class because I saw in the book the word Caelum means sky or heavens and I though that was a cool name and then Caelum was born XD
I had, like, 4 fursonas that I created on my old phone (including one I created as part of a custom species) but it had an SD card problem so I couldn't save the images I drew of them. Luckily, I use IbisPaintX to draw digitally on my phone so all images created in the app are stored there even if you save them so I could still (kinda) reference but couldn't import or export images •w• So, yeah, I've kinda forgotten what they look like because it now belongs to my brother and has a new SD card in it :V I need to make new fursonas TwT

My fursona is an original species based off of dragons, goats,hyenas and lynxes,they have a deformed hunched over and expressive eyes with eyebags. They look intimidating and act snarky sometimes yet have good intentions. They still really don't have a name. As of now,They're various shades of blue with paler and darker accents with one blue eye and one brown eye.
What I did with mine is just imagine him as a somewhat exaggerated version of myself but fluffier. It's still a work in progress though. A bit snarky and reserved at first, but kind of a goofball when you get to know him, and caring of those who he cares about. Willing to try new things (more than me), but most of the time not impulsive. He's good with technology and loves Metal music, he can also sing. As for the species, it's an opossum, just because I love opossums, they either look like they know their way in life or like they don't have a clue of what they're doing, but still give it a go. The name's Lu, I love how I came out with that name, it has history. One day out of curiosity I asked my parents what other name(s) they were thinking on giving me when I was born. Turns out I almost was named José Luis. Lu is just a shortening of the second name.

What I did with mine is just imagine him as a somewhat exaggerated version of myself but fluffier. It's still a work in progress though.
A bit snarky and reserved at first, but kind of a goofball when you get to know him, and caring of those who he cares about. Willing to try new things (more than me), but most of the time not impulsive. He's good with technology and loves Metal music, he can also sing.
As for the species, it's an opossum, just because I love opossums, they either look like they know their way in life or like they don't have a clue of what they're doing, but still give it a go.
The name's Lu, I love how I came out with that name, it has history. One day out of curiosity I asked my parents what other name(s) they were thinking on giving me when I was born. Turns out I almost was named José Luis. Lu is just a shortening of the second name.
