Just tried to remember to be kind to myself when there’s dark winter days. I’ve learned to love it. Rain on the windows means cosy blankets and candles to me now. It’s not a negative thing it’s my ‘time to cozy up and enjoy’ things. Thank you for that.❤. I think it’s all about perspective. 😊

Hi Cecilia, I found your channel on Christmas weekend during a winter storm. I was snowed in with my two year old Maltese Luna and feeling very down due to my husband Dave (married 34 yrs) passing away in September and my step daughter in mid December. Plus, I wasn't able to see family for Christmas due to the weather. I am living alone for the first time in my life at age 57 (58 in April). It was also my first Christmas alone. But when I found your channel and had 3 years of content to watch I was set! I fell in love with your island, you, Christoffer and Grim! Christoffer reminds me of my husband Dave - Beard, quiet and loves to cook. You remind me of myself in so many ways - Reading - loves fairy lights - walking on treadmill as well as hiking and your sense of adventure. Your sense of humor and your mannerisms are a lot like mine as well. I love how it shows that you are so happy and enjoying life. I am normally exactly like that but of course struggling with anxiety and grief now. At first watching you and Christoffer made me sad because I was missing my hubby and your videos together reminded me of my husband and I. But then I was able to turn it around and thrived on watching all of your adventures together. I watched EVERY video! The first ten years of our marriage Dave and I did a lot of back country camping, the best was in Utah. My husband was diagnosed in 1998 (ten years into our marriage) with a rare auto immune disease called Scleroderma. Before my husband and step daughter, Emily (aged 41) passed last year; the year before that I lost my mother in March, father in law in July and my mother in law in October. I had adopted Luna 1 month before my mother became ill and two months before my mother passed. Luna has helped comfort me through 5 deaths. She was 2 on November 22nd and my husband would have been 62 on November the 29th. November is a good month for birthdays, right? I know that both you and Christoffer have birthdays then as well. You asked in your video today if the comfy, coziness of adding more fairy lights is helpful and comforting to watch, it is. Before I started watching your channel I was putting fairy lights in Mason Jars and only had a few here and there. After seeing your cabin lighting, I have added a lot more. It has helped me get through the short days in Ohio. I struggled a lot this winter when it got dark so early, so I just turned the lights on everywhere in the house. I apologize for the long post but your channel has helped me so much! Thank you!! XOXO ~~~ Toni & Luna

Oh my god, Toni. Hello. I first lost my friend of 28 years & fiance as of 2018. I'd already lost my favorite aunt young & then my dog. That was hard. But the deaths of my mom & dad (both unnaturally) came next. I gained 80 lbs & could not work. Developed a severe tremor. And yet, and yet, I know it is temporary. (I am in Minnesota) My only daughter graduates HS in June, but then we're going to Svalbard in July to celebrate!!!!

As I read the comments I find a theme. Everyone has benefitted so much by your lovely enthusiasm for the Polar Night. The secret seems to be keeping your home bright and cheery with lots of lights . Have a schedule in place that demands you be out of bed and at least moving by a certain hour every day. Do not allow laundry, cleaning, work of any kind to go undone, because in the end you will become undone! Go outside everyday , dress for the weather and breathe some fresh air . Cook good food and sit down and appreciate eating it. And so much more you have shared with us!

I’m not normally a winter person. I’m a person driven by the sunlight. I also live in a place that does not get a lot of sunlight year around (pacific northwest), but this winter wasn’t bad for me. Seeing how you handle the darkness showed me a perspective that’s completely different to mine. I appreciate it, and it’s helped me look at the darkness in a different way. I kinda missed it now that the daylight has come back and it’s more sunny than usual for where I live this year. It’s interesting how perspectives change when you see someone enjoying something that is so different to what you know about yourself. I’m still very much a “sun” person, but I have a new affinity for the darkness and the winter that I never had before. So, thank you for that.

I appreciate you candor about how the polar night is cozy and how your mind set changes when it's over. It occurred to me from something that you said that when the dark is gone you can see that whole wide open space all around you and I guess that makes a complete difference. I live in Michigan in the States and I do have that same sense of coziness during the winter months (even without polar night!). I was also thinking that it would be neat if you put together a northern lights video with some music for those of us who like that sort of thing. Apparently, we have had more rain so far in 2023 than Seattle, WA. Creating a cozy atmosphere (candles, music, snuggles with the doggies) has really helped. I live in Southern California. One might think we know nothing of winter, but this year has been a rather extraordinary one. WInter for us is rain, which is most precious and somewhat overwhelming after an endless drought. It has been ‘cold’ for us - dropping below 60F (15C), with lows in the 40s (around 8 or 10C). And it even means overwhelming amounts of snow in our distant mountains. We actually have more snow than some areas of the Alps at the moment. I watch your videos because I seek coziness in a world that is often glaringly bright and constantly demanding that one get outside. And this year, your videos have been even more enjoyable on rainy days. I love the idea of finding the beauty in the world, no matter the weather. I used to hate winter and having it get dark earlier due to the time change in the U.S. However, since watching your channel, I found I embraced it so much more the past couple of years! And so YES, it has helped me a lot watching your channel. And I started a Vit D regimen myself and noticed a big difference in how I'm feeling physically! So thank you for that!

Cecilia, you are food for the soul. We are from the Deep South of the US and have made a really hard transition moving to northern North Dakota about 30 minutes from Canada. I found your channel through Kara and Nate and this was a God thing. While our climate is not nearly as extreme as yours, you have made me see the beauty of our cold, stark surroundings and joy that can be found no matter where you are. You are a blessing and I, and my large family, are grateful for you. You’re doing incredible, fascinating, beautiful content . Keep it up!!

I used to HATE winter with a passion. But, gradually over time winter has become my favorite season. I live in Michigan about 30 min. outside of Detroit. It is cold during the winter but not nearly as cold as Svalbard. Actually, when I started going through menopause early in life summers were a real drag. Hot flashes are horrible. Having a hot flash while it is 90° outside. Forget it!!! So even though I love the long days that summer brings I hate the hot weather. I love all of my wool dresses and fleece lined leggings. I love getting under ALL the covers on my bed and turning on the heated blanket! I homeschool and I love homeschooling in our pajamas in the winter cuddled under blankets while enjoying a good book. It really does not get that much better than that. So I am grateful that winter lasts long in Michigan. We even get snow in April! It really never warms up to a proper spring until mid to late May. But…June, July, August, September and part of October are all warm. I too miss winter as soon as it’s over. I pray for a speedy summer!

Your channel has made a massive difference to my life and that of my daughter and mother. I home educate my teen daughter who is autistic and has medical needs, I also care for my husband who has terminal cancer and we also live with my mother who helps me as well. I often have no time for myself or things I want to do but since watching your channel I have learned to love my home more and make the best of the horrid wet weather we have in the UK. I bought myself a sleigh chair (almost bought the same one as your sheep skin but I'm vegan and Jain and couldn't find non sheep skin). We have lights and candles and when we are comfy, my daughter and mother watch your svalbard video's, they tease me about wanting to live in svalbard with a dog like Grim because I love dogs, hiking and cold mountain hiking (as I used to in Austria as my husband is half Austrian). I am also originally from Goa, India so because of my portuguese heritage, I love seeing your videos when you visit your family too. I haven't been there for many years but I had the best childhood memories of holidays visiting my aunt's best friends from the days when she lived there. ❄

I’m from New Jersey USA and when I was young we used to get blizzards all the time during winter and ice storms. Now we get flurries no accumulation. The difference in our winters is insane. We would still travel to school when there was under 12 inches of snow. We only got off when it hit 12 inches. It’s insane to think this is the same state. I miss our snow and our winters. Our seasons where awesome we got the best of all weather types during season. So I love watching ur videos to see the snow I miss. Obviously we don’t have glaciers and all that but still I love watching the snow storms I miss them. They are so beautiful when they first come down. The next day is usually chaos and the snow is dirty but that first day hot chocolate by a fire while the snow is pouring down. Love it. Love watching it so thank you for sharing it. And I love the northern lights! We actually got them down here the other night. It’s crazy and scary when u think what they really are 😳 sun flares are no joke. But beautiful. So thank you for sharing it. I don’t think I could do the polar night for that long but first couple months of it I think I would enjoy it. ❤it’s beautiful all ur videos are so beautiful with the nature shots you do!

I was so petrified, esp because I am a new nurse and would be working a lot of nights. I stumbled upon one of your videos talking about the polar night and I had such an amazing time this winter. I called my month of night shifts my polar night b/c I didn't see the sun. I got candles and string lights and made everything so cozy. I kept a Svalbard on my weather app so I would see what the weather was where you were compared to Maryland in the US. I learned to truly love the cold and darkness this past winter. I went for walks in the dark and cold, which I NEVER would have done in years past. Your channel has truly changed my life!

I live in Southern California, and I've fallen out of love with summer in the past few years as the weather here has changed. Summers are less hot, have turned muggy, and mosquitoes arrived out of nowhere and now won't go away. This made me look forward to the darker, colder, quieter months here, and your videos have added to that in a lovely way. They've changed my perspective on cold weather (dress appropriately! something native Southern Californians do not know how to do), nighttime and darkness (more time to enjoy the stars and night sky), and getting cozy and comfy at home. I also appreciate that you've shared about how taking time to travel and relax, and then have a routine at home, have helped you during the winter months. You've helped me see things in a new way, in addition to falling in love with Svalbard! I hope to visit one day and see some of the lovely places you've shared in your videos. Thank you for what you do - I always look forward to your next video!

This winter has been brutal. Below zero F temps, roaring wind, road to my house closed by 4 foot drifts, having to be plowed out by the neighbor on several occasions.... I am learning, in my older age, to loathe winter. I'm glad somebody loves it but to me it's just four long months of hell. The only good thing about winters in Wyoming is that they aren't in total darkness. Otherwise winters here are sometimes worse than those on Svalbard.

I live in California where it doesn't snow or really even rain - rarely, but this year/season we've had so much rain since January. Lots of flooding in our county. It's snowed in a lot of areas that don't get snow.We recently returned to daylight savings time and so the days are getting longer every day. Plus, over the rest of the US we have experienced SEVERE winter weather. A tornado just flattened a whole town in Missippippi (?) or somewhere in the South. And in states like Utah where it snows a lot - they have received so much snow that in many mountain areas they are close to being buried. This has definitely been a winter for the history books!

I am watching your videos for about 1,5 years and I can see this change of the seasons. Last year in March we went to Svalbard and life is different for me since then. I think you guys celebrate nature more. We in Poland are also happy when spring is here, but sun is normal in a way. It is expected to be here. Also we don’t notice those small changes in vegetation, animals and in daylight. Last year we traveled a little in Scandinavia and I think you guys have unique talent to be in peace with nature. Do you see it? How are you raised to be more pro nature? We also have outdoorsy people, some of us like pets or plants but it is not it. It is not connected. Can you make a video about it?

Hi Cecilia! My husband and I have been watching your channel now since about last summer, and we love it! Your positivity is infectious and Christoffer's matter-of-fact nature always makes us laugh. 💗 We live in Michigan, USA and I have dreaded the cold dark winters for many years now, but I noticed that didn't happen to me this year. I've always found the snowy days magical, but this time I found myself appreciating the crisp air, blue skies (when we have them), and even the darkness didn't bother me so much. It was a milder winter for us, so I'm sure that helped. However, your enthusiasm for the polar night and commitment to getting outside even in the stormy weather inspired me. I hope to take that same inspiration into next winter as well!
On another note, I would be interested to see how your Vit D levels fared through this polar night. I started the winter taking a supplement but didn't keep up with it for very long 😊 Thanks for sharing your life on Svalbard with us!

We get proper winter here, and in the darkest parts the sun is only up from 8-4 (aka most of it is when people are generally at work). This winter, though it hasn't been horrifically cold (other than right before Christmas... -30C to -55C is just too cold!), I've found it more difficult for two reasons I think. First, I wasn't getting outside as much as I should have been, just being active outside is so important, and 2) it's been cloudy a LOT of the time. I love winter days when it's super sunny, it's usually colder so you have to bundle up, but I'm convinced that I'm solar-powered, I feel SO much better on sunny days! I used to make a point of going out in the winter and enjoying the season for what it is, thank you for the reminder of how to make it not only easier, but enjoyable! The Scandinavian people really have winter figured out!

I usually don't enjoy winter. However, this year we didn't get a winter in my country. We had one day of snow and two weeks of actually cold weather. I didn't mind it at the time, but when the trees started blooming I was sad. I usually love spring because it's exciting to have the warmth and the sun back, but after it's been sunny and mild all winter it's not as exciting. So we should appreciate all seasons because it's not the same without them.
