- Hey y’all,
I’m back with a very impromptu nurse talk video. I want to have an open dialogue about the fear that is a toxic part of nursing.
That same fear contributes to nurses settling for peanuts, poor nurse to patient ratio and poor patient outcomes.
I created my channel to serve as a resource for nursing students and new graduate nurses. Sharing my stories, being transparent about my mistakes is to let other nurses know that mistakes will occur. It’s all about how you handle it.
If any nurse ever tells you they’ve never had a med error…They’re either lying to you, or they just became a nurse yesterday 😂

I wish I had a clinical instructor like you. I flourished under one clinical instructor who did not treat me like I was an idiot destined to fail. I will never forget the words, "Relax. I am here to help you learn. I will not let you kill or hurt a patient. You do your thing and I will do my thing of having your back. I am here to help you, not hinder you." Tears came to my eyes. My clinical became a joy.
That is the kind of instructors we need for the profession. I’m happy you had that experience ❤️
@@KendraRN Indeed. Thank you for being one who chooses to educate. One can critique a student without massacring their dignity. Thank you for not believing the ridiculous adage that nurses eat their young. At my community college we were required to pass the Hesi exam to graduate. I remember turning in my scantron, and having aced it, I grabbed my results and swore never to step back into that school again. I cared nothing about graduation. I do give recognition to the instructors for threatening all of its students with failure and defeat at every turn. Our school had a high pass rate when it’s students took boards. If you managed not to have a mental breakdown I suppose the strategy worked. My most valuable lesson: I learned how to stand up for myself. That should not have been my take away from my Education. I swore never to be THOSE faces of nursing. I wonder how many nurses are bitter because that is all they have known. Sometimes I swear there is a correlation that bitter nurses often breed bitter patients. I might sound angry. I am not. This topic just hit me like a toothache. I am only bitter that my educational experience was not what I went In thinking it would be, what it should had been. So yes, I am always thankful and grateful for nurses like yourself, and like my one clinical instructor.

When I had my c section the nurse gave me the wrong pain medicine. I looked at it and told her to recheck that it didn’t look like the right medicine. The fear in her eyes had me stupefied. She begged me not to tell the doctor and was so stressed out about it. I laughed and told her to calm down that it was okay. This nurse had been so kind and nurturing to me and I couldn’t imagine saying anything that would hurt her. It gave me a sneak peek into the fear some nurses have and how some might walk on eggshells for fear of retaliation.
She could have killed you. You should've definitely reported her. What the heck?????

@@KendraRN I appreciate your vids. I would love for you to do one regarding doctors being disrespectful toward nurses and how you personally handle it. Do you think it would decrease or stop if doctors faced similar consequences to what a nurse would if he or she was disrespectful/unprofessional?
I love how you tell your truth. We as nurses have been taught not to judge but yet we judge each other, we ridicule one another. I have never seen a bunch of mean, high school, caddy people. If nurses only knew the power they have to shut sh*t down! We hold all the cards but yet we let them ( corporate/ administration) pull them right out of our hands. I honestly dislike nursing, the bullying, the gossip, the mean girl tactics. I dislike it.
We mishandle each other so frequently it’s astounding. I think my mission is to eliminate as much toxicity from the profession while I am in it. Thank you for watching!

Hospital nursing is what sucks. I left two bedside jobs because of bad environment. I now do homecare and LTC. I love it! Not really any drama or issues at all.
Nurses experience bullying from nurses, physicians, and sometimes nurse assistants.
Preach it sis. Nursing is toxic. Period. Everyone is in denial. Smh!

Hospitals do NOT take the side of nurses. They are very quick to wrongly judge. That doesn’t happen to MDs

Nursing is a very rewarding career, however it is not all rainbows and sunshine and it's great to see someone who is not afraid to have a platform that shows it all...the good, the bad, and the ugly. You always come thru. Honestly I low key always feel like they always trying to intimidate us. It’s sad. I used to want to do so much now I just want out! Target looks appetizing to work. The abuse starts in nursing school.
It really does start in nursing school and the toxicity seeps right into clinical practice. I understand what you mean. Nurses should be able to share their stories without fear.
On the one hand, i completely understand the emphasis on "protect your license protect your license!" because they want us to be safe nurses. But they never discuss like, what happens when you actually do make an error? We skimmed over "To Err Is Human" and other key works by nurses in my prerequisites, but that was it. I'm in semester 3/5 right now, and we haven't discussed anything like that in over a year.

I totally agree I am in Nuursing school and from our very first class instructers put these fears in our hearts . Honestly I was about to leave the nursing school
@@samaaliyeva5484 I don’t think leaving would be my first reaction but be aware it’s not rainbows and sunshine when you start working. I am hoping to eventually leave the i hospital and work a less physical demanding job. As well as less stressful nursing job. Insurance nursing from what I see isn’t so bad. I am thinking to eventually try that. My only thing is I am so used to making my own schedule and working 2 days it will be hard for me to work a 9-5 Monday-Friday lol.

I’m a new nurse on a neuro/stroke PCU and I go to work everyday trembling that I’ll make an error that could hurt someone. I’ve never experienced such high levels of anxiety. I find comfort in hearing you talk about your successes and your mistakes. I hate living in this fear it’s really debilitating 😔

You need to find another career or move on to another area or even country. DO NOT stay to be abused by anyone.
Some nurses act like they are perfect practitioners.
Those are the ones you steer clear of!
What’s so sad is how easy it is for someone to LIE to the BON and have you in a world of issues until the investigation is over. These investigations can take years, unless you pay an attorney to push the board along to get your issue resolved.
I have been in the nursing field for about 40 years. I am looking forward to retiring because of coworkers !! Nursing will never advance to the professional level where we are respected for our knowledge and training and expertise. There is so much backstabbing and drama that it’s almost like nurses don’t want to be at a higher level! Physicians, patients , the general public don’t see us for what we are. What a shame. I am so happy my daughter changed her mind and chose a different field. That’s sad!

I talked my sister out of being of nurse, for many reasons. Anyhow im glad i did, she is making more than me now in a different career and how so much free time. I did my job.

This channel is LIFE! I’ve been an RN for over 20 years and I’m writing a book about nursing. This is not a textbook either. Nurses are low hanging fruit in the judicial system. Doctors come with a lot of insurances and they don’t get reported as often. People don’t know how to report a doctor but they will report the heck out of a nurse.

I thought about going back for a higher degree, but decided why take out a huge loan for higher education in a field that i do not enjoy. I really enjoy your content and WE SUPPORT YOU❤❤❤

I loved your video. I am a registered nurse and i can relate to what you are saying. The problem is alot of nurses are threathened with write ups, suspensions, terminations and even being reported to the board. That is why some nurses are scared to speak up. I remember a while back when I made a med error, the ADON threaten to report me to the board of nursing. The patient was not harmed and it was not even that big of an error. I remember how scared I felt thinking my career was going to be over. You are absolutely right, things need to change.
In the early 2000's nursing management literature discussed the correlation between non-punitive clinical settings and how they enhanced employee retention. The power tripping and arrogance is what causes us to instill fear of reporting and punishment. The public is instilling fear and power tripping on us because they see increased pay rates and media exposure! Jealousy amongst minority nurses is at a disgustingly high level...numerous stories of incivilty abound. I'm a well groomed member of Sigma Theta Tau, former nurse entrepreneur, mentor, and state board member.....the fear we impart in one another is all about powerlessness. Get into any NANDA care plan and discover the solutions to our problems. Empowerment in nursing is the key to influencing process improvement!

@@ItsBreiania Nursing is definitely a stressful field with a lot of toxic working environments, and places that set you up to fail because of poor training/ orientation.. not to mention the legal issues with it and constantly changing laws and regulations.
..All this for a pretty much thankless job dealing with people on their worst behavior and being overworked because of understaffing.
We are nurses but we are HUMAN first!! Thank you Kendra for keeping it real and being vulnerable. You are my role model as a new nurse!
RN here I admit that I have made medication error and I was called in to the office. The clinical educator addressed the mistake and I will never forget that day. However, I have learned from my mistake and I am grateful for it.

It goes both way the administration needs to listen to the nurses and help them !!! Not use it against them in med errors!
I remember having an instructor and a couple of preceptors who said they never made a med error ever. Even back then, I recognized it was bogus. The only difference between then and now is that I feel sorry for these folks who feel like they have to cover up their mistakes instead of learning and moving forward.

Nursing is very stressful and I applaud your hard work and dedication. There are so many duties that nurses perform involving their profession. They go above and beyond to provide healthcare.

It would be so unfortunate and a disservice to us all if we weren’t able to speak our minds on these topics! I’m not a nurse but when I was a study coordinator in clinic I did make mistakes. I use these as learning lessons for new coordinators that join our team. It happens!
Fear is such a horrible feeling and tactic in the workplace. We are all human, perfectly flawed. Being able to share our flaws safely makes the world a better place.
Man, from day 1, there’s so much chatter about losing our non-existant licenses (we’re students).
It feels like we can’t be completely transparent to avoid repercussions. 😬

I'm a CNA in LTC, and one of the veterans of the sport (Rest in Peace) used to say that it isn't about us it's about the residents. Workplace culture is very strange in the context of what an ideal society looks like, and I'm glad you're here on RUclips equipping the generation with the tools and mindsets needed to make this field a much better one to work in. I have noticed a huge difference in all nurses in the recent years. Most are there and look miserable. Not a smile, hello! I feel nurses are no longer there because they love doing this type of work, but more out of necessity. I don’t see kindness or compassion towards the patients. Through your videos I’m realizing that it’s primarily because of their workplace. Which isn’t fair to us patients. Recently had my my uncle admitted for a diabetic emergency. He also had an asymptomatic stroke, and an ischemic stroke. They let him fall in their bigger hospital, then after he was released and admitted again to their smaller campus, I asked that they please place fall risk bands?! Why do I have to tell an ICU nurse what she should know?! Then the move him to med surge.. less than 8 hours there he fell off the bed?! 😢 They blamed him!! Are you kidding me, he’s incompetent!! They never called us, never wrote up a mandatory incident report nor render aid until the way later that day! Then the case manager and nurse came in like 2 gangsters yelling at my uncle who couldn’t ever comprehend what she was saying?! The nurse attacking me, in my face! They are malicious! No remorse, I’m looking into all avenues to make sure they do not work with people! They belong working in a warehouse alone! Sadly something has changed our nurses and not for the better! I overheard many complaining, or they roll their eyes back and forth to each other. Just disrespectful! Just telling my truth!
The crazy thing is a lot of nurses can relate. That's what keeps your advice thriving that's what builds your channel amongst other things. They love to hear the real

I was written up for a med error that I did not witness, I was told I did it. the patient actually took the medication, just not together. I spoke with the patient, doctor, my DON, the family in charge and they all laughed and said oxycodone is the same as Percocet, the only difference is perc has acetaminophen and only last about 5 hours. I quit the following day because i felt it wasn’t something I should have been written up for. I feel like they were trying to trap me within the work place instead of teaching me. I told them not to put me on the assignment and they did it anyway. That assignment was the hardest assignment in the building and I’m a new nurse but no one listened nor did they care.
Girl your situation sounds like mines‼️‼️‼️ New nurse, the facilities I worked in was less hectic, went into one that was hectic. Man had a fall, I called the doctor her refused him going out, and it was reported to the nurse on shift, they didn’t have neurological sheets and didn’t teach us how to put them in the system, on top I work for agency so never had any training. When I say the board does not care and they are dragging this situation im considering surrendering my license tomorrow

Exactly, the reason why they have to put fear into Nurses and it starts in nursing school is because there’s so many of us that if we banned together to really make changes, and they do not want to make changes because that cost money. It cost money to do what is right. God help.
Spot on about "system errors" ! But unfortunately, too many organizations know how to turn that around to absolve the "system.
This is spot on Kendra, thanks for posting! I did not have a great school experience in clinicals. As a new student, we had a nursing instructor berate us in front of a patient for something she told us to do (she explained a procedure wrong). After that, my goal was to avoid my clinical instructors, as much as possible, until I graduated (at the top of my class). I found some real role models on the job. BTW... internet trolls are on every channel I follow. People have nothing else to do, I guess?

Really appreciate this video. In the last week of RN school in California. We have been going over quality improvement and the push for 'Just Culture. ' I'm really hoping that we will keep moving in the direction of looking at errors based on system flaws not just isolating one individual. That being said I'm not planning on working in a hospital just outpatient, I've seen too many nurses be so busy in the hospital that they are not following protocols. It doesn't seem like a super safe work environment unfortunately.
The nursing degree offers a lot of options, you really don’t have to be tied down to working in a hospital. Glad to know that Just Culture is a framework still being talked about.

This is awesome. You have a new subscriber! I totally owned up to an error as a DSP. MEANWHILE, house manager kept rewriting the records to erase mistakes and got fired.
I was recently diagnosed with multiple PE. A year fricken year ive been nagging and begging my doctor to help me with pain and swelling and ignored me. It took a NP to diagnose and treat me after ten minutes of meeting me. Im forever grateful for that emergency room nurse practitioner she saved my life. My soctor however so angry with her and now i dont trust her at all

Kendra your content, honest personality, and transparency have been a blessing to me. I am switching careers in my mid-30s after years of being too nervous to take the plunge. I start an accelerated nursing program this year (this month actually) after slowly chipping away at retaking pre-reqs. Your channel has been really helpful to me to prepare mentally! I don't see many other nurses my age that look like me on youtube. Your transparency in the video you set to private - about the family callback situation - taught me a lot before I even hit the floor of my clinicals! People can be negative and over-eager to find flaw and be retaliatory due to their own bitterness or unhappiness. Please do not stop sharing THE REAL side of nursing, good and bad!!! I left comment few weeks ago, about how can you protect your licence. This video relived my fear. I could not be agree more with fact that nurses must to speak up. By the way I am 7 month old rn and now I always manually set up my pumps and every time I think about your story

Educating before and after a medication error is imperative.
It doesn’t have to be a fear instilled in us as Nurses. We are human and are not perfect. Yes we need to provide safe, effective care. Many of us that have made errors have learned from them and it makes us even more aware then before. Pharmacy and Doctors make tons of errors but if I as the nurse follow an incorrect order than it’s on me. I’ve seen it happen, I’ve stopped it from happening. It’s so much we do that goes unnoticed. I’m not bashing doctors or pharmacists, just FYI.

If a nurse makes a medication error, do you think they should speak up? It's happened me before I was so scared! I kept checking on my pt to make sure they were okay throughout my shift.
Its a good thing you are sharing your knowledge and experience. I believe doing this creates understanding and empathy with what nurses go through on the job.
