For under $10k and under 100k miles The 3.0 E 85 is the best car I’ve ever driven so far. Only had it here but it had to replace an old muscle car. It ended up replacing that and my daily driver.
It’s so confident and stable everywhere I look as long as it’s well-maintained to go on a long road trip people only say “bring a hat and sunscreen“
It is a lot of bang for your buck and thankfully doesn’t come with any touchscreens, but still has many modern features, including a dozen airbags
I’ve used it to haul lumber. I’ve used it to haul ass, even cruising slow people think you are rich driving this thing they are a dime a dozen.
Now I’d the time to enjoy a Z4

I owned a 2.5 E85 (2006) about 8 years ago, then upgraded to a E89 25i, which looked better and was more stylish, but it didn’t have as much of the fun factor as the E85. Also the E85 was a 6 cylinder, but E89 was a 4, which also didn’t sound as nice. Anyway, I have since owned a Cayman 718 S and have now gone back to a 2007 3.0si (E85), which has the most fun factor of all of them. I won’t be letting this one go!

Hi Joel, nice vid! I have had the z3 1.9 as my first car. Loved it but i wanted more power. My second car was de e85 z4 3.0. Absolutely loved it! The sound of the engine was amazing. Power was allright. I had the m suspension, but it wasn’t too stiff. I’ve had it for two years as a daily driver. Never had any issues. Very solid car. But i always wanted the e89 z4. I personally just love the looks, exterior as well as interior. Now i have the z4 35is and i couldn’t be happier. I think if you have the m adaptive suspension, you wont miss the e85. You can definitely feel that its a heavier car, but with the adaptive suspension it can be quite sporty. So in my opinion its a great upgrade! And if you realy love the e85, maybe de z4m is a good option ;) but that would be a second car for me (if i had the money😂).
    Kind regards from the Netherlands!

I just sold my 2007 2.5i M sport and bought a 2011 23i M sport Highline Edition. I much prefer the e89. Better styling, slightly faster, slightly more economical, better ride quality (the e89 is on 19" rft and still drives better than the e85 did on 18" non rft) and far superior interior. If you have the funds, go for the e89!

For Me, I am sure BMW have made driving improvements etc, but I prefer the look of the 2004 E85 Z4, the more modern styling updates lose some of the original character of the original design, the bonnet being one and the classic Z lines in the side of the car as well as the more pronounced tail lip on the boot. I think I would prefer the older and outdated driving experience of a car that is maybe more fun, the 2011 E89 Z4 would be too refined for someone like me wanting to go back to my youth and have a real driving experience where the car needs a bit more attention to keep it on the road. Just my view, but I am sick of modern cars almost driving themselves, so my 2016 car as nice as it is and efficient as it is needs to go! ;)

I've been driving z4s since 2007 (started with 2.5 roads se) - and taken out a top end 3.5si when my 2.5 was looking a little long in the tooth. The 35si was a lovely car but definitely more tourer than sports - it importantly however completely lacked the striking sense of occasion I always felt with my 2.5. Luckily, I then had the opportunity to take out a rare z4m in prestine condition - let's just say there was no comparison. I think the latest gen sound like boy racer cars with the nasty turbo release valve sound - it's missing the trademark roar of the naturally aspirated 6 pot.
The Z4M has its problems (gear box is acquired taste), but it's one hell of a car that always turns heads. Find one of those instead. Nice channel - I think you love these motors as much as I do Joel!

People stop me at the gas station asking about it. Their 2014 highlander costs 3x what I paid. Straight six with a timing, chain variable valve, timing, deliberate cam that’s just a modern vehicle. This really was the deal when it was new, but they age very well as long as you take care of the plastics.

Thanks Joel and thank Ben. Nice video and interesting to hear the comparison. The M E85/6 vs. E89 35is is an interesting comparison. The M is even more of a weekend car and manual only - so quite different to the E89. But I imagine the torque and DCT could be an appealing combo for some.

I absolutely love my E85, I’ve been out in it today donutting in the snow 😂 (on a private car park in Mexico 😉). I looked at the E89 before getting my E85 to decide whether to wait a bit longer and get an E89 or just get an E85 straight away. I personally prefer the looks of the exterior of the E85 but just wish the interior was more modern! Main reason I chose the E85 was cost. Great video Joel it is interesting the differences between the E85 and E89, the E89 certain seems more refined than the E85 and I do like the styling of the E89 at the front, still not struck on the rear looks and for me the boot space just let's the E89 down for practicality I don't think I could live with such a small boot compared with my E85 especially for holiday luggage with the roof down.

  • @MrRoyck10

I will not upgrade to the E89 as this car will not age well as my E86, my E86 captures the essence of the Z car and looks far better than the e89 and the current Zupra. E89 is for the refined driver which I am not looking for to be honest, it is all about NA engine straight six the BMW perfected before going turbo. E86 provokes emotion from different angle when compare to the bland e89, however I am sure that the e89 is a good car but it lack the raw feel of the OG Z.

It has 212hp/t vs the 3.0si which has 196hp/t so the e85 is not much slower that’s 8% less but the torque/mass is 312 vs 230 35% less. This means when both at low rpm the e89 is 35% faster but with both around the max power only 8% slower on theory. Another factor is the power to air drag ratio and with similar drag it will be 340/265 28% worse for e86 which applies at high speed when air drag is high.

Joel, which would you choose, e89 35i or e85 z4m? And why please?

Does seem that Z4s pick up less bills than Boxers. If Boxers go wrong, it seems to be terminal, whereas higher spec Z4s seem to be more reasonable when things go wrong. ....... I think....... Does anyone have experience of this personally?

I know that the Z4s are cheaper to maintain than the Boxster’s predominately because in those the engine is located centrally under the roof mechanism. The 3.0 Z4 is particularly cheap to maintain because the engine is so mass produced and parts are easy to come by

So are they saying the E85/86 3.0 is more reliable over the 2.0?

Is it possible to run the 35is in sport plus so you get the more aggressive gear changes whilst keeping traction on. We tried sport plus then putting traction back on & it put us back into regular sport again.

Abit sad was thinking of buying a 2.0 litre z4 becuase they seem to be cheaper but don’t want it breaking down

Invictus boxing 3.0 litres can be found for the same sort of money and they’re much more reliable. Will work out cheaper in the long run

It's Joel that’s the problem I’m thinking about buying it for my first car as I’m 21 and the insurance will be cheaper plus I prefer the seats they have in the 2.0 are the 2.0 really unreliable if you get one with 35000 miles on it or are they reliable but just not as reliable as the 3.0?

The main problem ive seem to notice on2004- 2006 BMW Z4. The machine has a tendency to overheat a lot. So change the radiator. The hoses, Thermostat, Waterpump. Its not that costly get parts from Auto Zone. Afterwards no problems.also get your steering done.

Hopefully you are not considering buying Ben’s E89. Content will be boring. If you want to get a new car for great content go for the Z4 M COUPE

    • @itsjoel
      @itsjoel  5 лет назад

Haha, I’m not, but what would be wrong with that? It might not be as exciting as an E86 M, but it is a fantastic car that I could think of lots of content with!
