Yes agreed, there were many angles to this. The brother was wrong about Peter, and was mostly right about Beth. Apparently, Beth’s actions and decision-making in the past had led to the family’s overbearing protection. Of course, I still think they went a bit overboard at the beginning of episode. Threatening to fire Beth’s fiancé was taking it a bit too far.

This episode just aired on the Hallmark channel this past week during a Columbo marathon, which sent me down a rabbit hole of watching Columbo episodes on Prime. I think what really stood out about this episode, despite the flaws, was Beth. Of this first season, Beth is the most interesting and memorable female character so far, and Susan Clarke plays her with a wonderfully insane intensity. I love it. Thank you for this witty and detailed recap. I really enjoyed it!

I just saw “Feud: Capote vs the Swans” and I’m wondering if this episode was actually based on ‘the shooting of the century’, the murder of a NYC socialite by his wife Ann Woodward, who claimed that she thought her husband was a burglar when she shot and killed him in the middle of the night. He was about to divorce her so people were suspicious, lol. Grand jury refused to indict and her mother-in-law was horrified by the publicity and wanted it all to go away, so people think she might have also helped her elude justice, even tho she always hated her.

'Airplane' brought out the intense woodenness of Leslie Nielsen's pre-1980 television and movie performances in wide-screen glory. To the actor's (and no doubt his bank account) credit, he fully embraced the new self-mocking image and made a nice name-above-the-title autumn Hollywood career as Lt. Frank Drebin, Mr. Magoo, Dracula, a comical Richard 'The Fugitive' Kimble parody, et al.

Susan Clark was the wife of Alex Karras who was a four-time Pro Bowl player with the Detroit Lions, where he played from 1958 to 1970. As an actor, Karras played Mongo in the 1974 comedy film Blazing Saddles. He also starred as George Papadopolis, the adoptive father of Webster Long (Emmanuel Lewis), in the ABC sitcom Webster (1983-1989) along with his wife Susan.
They were married in 1980 and remained so until Alex's death in 2012.

The production could have used someone with your attention to detail, because those keys should have instead been FoMoCo keys for his 71 Lincoln Continental. Maybe Edna bought it from Leslie.

In regards to your sentiment of “Beth didn’t need to murder her brother” because she could have gone off with Peter anyway: I think the motive of it just being that she wanted to be with Peter was a slight misdirect. I think her true intention was primarily to take over the family company. This is why she had her car ordered in advance because she anticipated being a new position of power. Additionally, even if we were to believe that it was about Peter… her brother put it into her head that nobody would love her for her, that any suitor would be after her for her position in life. This put doubts in her head that Peter actually loved her. So she figures if she runs the company, even if he’s only after her because of that - he’d be less inclined to leave her if she ran the company. Also she likely figured he’d love her more if she promoted him because her brothers words obviously stuck with her and she assumed he might be right.

Interesting theory. They never developed this idea in the episode but it does go a long way towards explaining where the prior car order came from, which to me seemed to have come out of nowhere, and in explaining how she was able to jump quickly to the proposition that maybe Peter wasn't the right man for her after all.
I didnt like your theory at first but on second consideration it does explain a few things in her personality, including how she was able to point her gun at Columbo, that it wasnt all about Peter, it was about control. Fits with the title too. Very interesting.. Good one.

But I digress. Your attention to detail is amazing. Never before have I seen a review that goes into so much depth. The actors biography/filmography and short synopsis, Identifying the vehicles being driven, the weapons being used, the locations being filmed, etc... help elevate a simple review into a mini documentary. This episode ranks up there for me, and I really enjoyed your review of it. I thought that Susan Clark and Leslie Nielsen both had strong performances in their respective roles. Beth's metamorphosis both in terms of appearance and behavior was remarkable, and Susan Clark did a great job there. Nielsen was good in a more understated role as someone who clearly loves Beth but is having a difficult time understanding her changes as the episode progresses. The scene with him and Columbo at the drive-in diner was great, and also demonstratea the trust that begins to build between them and eventually ends up helping him crack the case.
Beth started out as a sympathetic character, and even though her behavior as the episode progressed made it difficult to feel that way about her, in a way I could understand her acting out like that after years of being repressed and not supported by her family. It wasn't just her father and Bryce, but even her mother, as the face slap scene demonstrates. Like you, at first I thought Beth's "are you really?" comment was about Columbo being married rather than his compulsive nature.
The most humorous part of your review was when you described Beth's boardroom scene outfit - "as well as some furniture upholstery for a jacket" 🤣 I also loved the "Airplane!" references you threw in throughout.

@@WatchitforDays Thanks! One other thing that occurred to me (one more thing ... 😉). During the boardroom scene, where Beth is talking to Peter after Columbo left, she said "well if I've changed it's because I thought you'd like a more exciting woman". I wonder if part of her metamorphosis was a reaction to what Bryce said to her about Peter only being interested in her for the money, and as a result she was trying to be more edgy to please Peter (even though in reality that's not something she needed to do).

Over the years of watching and rewatching Columbo episodes is I've noticed two recurring patterns. You see it in most episodes if you are looking for it. There is usually some dialog where the victim trash talks the murderer. For this episode it's the scene that you pointed out where Bryce basically says Beth is a big loser and why would her bf be interested in anything but her money. The other pattern is the murderer trash talking Columbo before the big finish.

"Before things go sideways" is my new favorite way to describe a murder.
(1:32) First, I believe that's grapefruit juice given the froth on top. Second, if you consciously look for that glass throughout the next two minutes, you'll find out it has the permanence of a squirrel.
(6:40) The bedstead (the wood bits) that she's leaning against is a Victorian-era Spanish-revival spiral-twisted spindle set probably from the mid-1800s. That is a surprisingly expensive bed to find on a movie set.
    (6:48) Her actor's CV said, "I have a great cocoa-face".
(8:21) Guy's got a TV in his office in 1971 and a bobbin-style room partition that I can't even find on the Internet. He's either a Rockefeller or one of the better Franklins.
(9:12) For those of you wondering, Peter can tuck his front license plate up under the engine like that because California law specifically exempted front plates from all clear-visibility standards until 2004.
(9:19) That is an "underground" electric gate system. You just push harder and it opens. That's why in a lot of movies from the 70s and 80s you'll see a chain/padlock on such gates.
(10:28) Worst house key I've ever seen. Do they live in a pirate's chest? There is literally one bite in that bit. I believe they call those "skeleton keys" because they are most often found on the desiccated remains of snobby homeowners.
(13:53) A chessboard set so the guest has the first move. I miss Bryce. He was good people.
(16:38) $0.50 tip on a $10.50 fare is a 5% tip. Hence the drivers scowl. 15% is standard.
(23:42) If this IS a coroner's inquest, she's not sitting in that chair. A coroner cannot place blame, so she wouldn't even have to be there for the finale. If it's a grand jury, she CAN'T be there by law. Also, it can't be an "accident" because Bryce was shot. It would be "lawful killing".
(26:31) If you ever want to impress someone, memorize their telephone number. Unless you're a stalker. In which case, seek help.
(28:50) Because the speed with which this car was ordered and arrived is clearly significant, now is as good a time as any to point out that "coroner's inquests" take 1-3 months to finish.
(30:38) Columbo handing that woman that cigar makes me laugh every single time.
(31:40) That hairstyle is a 1960s "flip", made famous by Mary Tyler Moore on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
(37:35) A nude model selling clothing. Now I've seen everything.
(38:03) That hat is either a "newsboy" or a "baker boy", but I can never tell which.
(46:20) That is a magnificent callback joke. Well played.
(52:00) So, not a "verdict" and thus double jeopardy doesn't apply. A coroner's determination of "accident" or "lawful killing" does not require an investigation to cease. An inquest is a public hearing to determine who died, when, and how. Never why or by whom. That's for the trial and/or grand jury.

Though Bryce was a bit harsh, but he honestly was right to keep his sister in line, he was sadly wrong about Peter Hamilton. However, once you find out the reigns were gone from her, she turns out to be more vicious, far more nasty, and certainly shows us why her Brother and her Father before, had concerns about her.
Honestly, I think had Bryce and Peter had a chance to talk man to man, and Beth hadn't tried this hairbrained scheme, perhaps a real understanding would have been found and the conflict settled.

Shonna, I give you five coffees out of five for your magnificent review. You really have a keen eye for details! Two of those I’ve noticed myself years ago, as I own the full Columbo DVD boxset: the dog barking while not actually barking and the best one, the « Oh, thank you » said twice for nothing. How could they miss that one while editing? Anyway, carry on the great work, I just hope you reach Columbo loves the night life. ❤️
