I've been fishing for fifty years and just learned something fundamental from this about fish location. Magic. Thanks!

Have you tried the shimano world pop? The flash boost really makes sense on them, so you can leave them idle forever.

I like a stick with tiny tail spinner attached it’s subtle kills on flat days or highly pressured places

All great choices. I may add a tube and a floating worm.

When using the popper on calm days I find at times they’ll just slap at it so I always have a wacky rig ready for a follow up.

My best days were sunny calm days on my home river. A cheap $2.99 bps popper in bleeding shad caught 2 of my 3 top biggest bass of the year. The other was on a kvd square bill crankbait in gizzard shad!

I just finished setting up 1 of my poppers today like the past video you made about them. I tied buck hair, flashaboo and duck feathers on the tail. Thanks

Pretty much the same as my list. A small spook works as well.

Love throwing small pop-r's! What about real small minnow style baits on an A-Rig?

Great stuff as always, thank you!! The Ned rig has been my go to here in the middle of the country. Sometimes I will pair it with a hand tied green pumpkin maribou jig. It’s a very subtle presentation with a different look.

A fun bait to try is the Jackel piku piku. You'll catch everything on it to incude bluegill, perch along with bass and pike .if its shallow it will eat it. The interesting part is how different fish eat it. It had me giggling like a kid. But it must be dead calm slick to work.

Other than a stick bait, for lakes, a split shot rig. Also, some select baits depending more on the time of year. For tidal water, an 1/8 oz. T-rigged worm or bb cricket.

Matt, I have a question for you. I’m taking a rod building class through Mudhole next week and I’m going to upgrade my blank for a Swimjig rod for fishing in Florida. Can you please tell me what MHX casting rod blank model you use for Swimjigs so I can order it? I’m looking for a rod in the 7’3”-7’5 MH power with a mod fast or fast action whatever you recommend. I usually fish 40-50lb braid to a 25lb shock flourocarbon leader depending on water clarity. I appreciate any help you can provide and love your channel. I’m a big fan of everything you do. Keep up the great work and best of luck this season. Thanks Matt

Matt, I choose not to use FFS, yet I have no problem with those who do. I do fear one possible impact. I hope that FFS does not retard R&D with regard to traditional lures. I fear certain, traditional lures, may be gin to disappear from the market as more and more anglers employ FFS.

In spring pre spawn flat calm days, hundreds of smallmouth Suspend a couple feet under the surface and will not bite anything and I mean anything. Once you get close to one, it slowly swims off and down deeper. The lake has 20ft water clarity and you can just see brown spots all over and they're all big smallmouth. Strange.

    • @MattStefanFishing
