I remember Underworld put out an app many years ago that included isolated stems of certain tracks. Mo Move was one of them, and the sound that plays at 1:14 on that track was labeled "Distorted violin" or something like that. It sounds kind of similar to the sound you were trying to work out at 12:10. Could be some kind of heavily processed bowed string instrument.
Still catch myself coming back to these older videos, Great series. The Beach soundtrack is one of my favourites too, love that little story. Amazing job man
02:00 yeah, Underworld are very good about having stuff repeat endlessly without it getting boring, settling into this hypnotic slowly evolving groove. This is a valiant effort btw. It's not like most of the other tracks you do where you can use a lot of the original samples and Underworld always have so many weird (and wonderful) sounds sprinkled through the mix. So funny that they came back to using the harmonica on this track, as it was heavily featured in one of their very earliest tracks (Bigmouth). Listening to the guitar parts at the end like this, it sounds like it's inspired by folk music (stuff like Nic Jones with this droning guitar fingerstyle sound).
I discovered this song on the beach soundtrack as well and it quickly became my favorite and I kept playing it over and over, just like you. This song touches me so deeply every time i listen to it. Thank you for deconstructing it. I never really had thought about it but knew it was special but now I understand it so much more and its complexities and the brilliant production. A jam is what it is and now I understand it. Just simple yet complex.
WoW this song is so amazing ! The first time I saw The beach was in a hotel room in hong kong during our first vacation together with my wife. The soundtrack is excellent and it made me rediscover this band Underworld. Since then, I continue to listen to them and they are still fantastic.
thats funny. I first saw the Beach coincidentally in Koh Phangan, Thailand! In a restuarant/cafe where play movies. But the sound was so bad I could barely hear the dialogue, but you could clearly hear the music through the movie. Which turned out to be the best bit! ha ha
Nicely done! Today is 20 years since the release of ”A Hundred Days Off”. My top 3 Underworld album. Track ”Luetin” is one of my favorit. U should try to recreate it some day.
Fair play having a go at this - good effort…. underworld are one of my favourite electronic artists and 8 ball is one of my favourite track of theirs…it’s one of those tracks which you can listen to a thousand times and if you’re in the right environment and head space it can still give you goose bumps…..always waiting for those strings to start in the latter part of the song - it’s the sun rising in a beautiful location every time ….I make music too - really enjoy your videos! Top work
Thought I'd struggle to get into this one as I don't know the song well, but still thoroughly enjoyable. Kinda reminds me of Lemon Jelly. Superb video as always.
21:46 my take is that its in C mixolydian as it has b7=Bb. Also can think of it as A phrygian (has b2 in it) if you want to think in relative minor but as the riff stays so much on C id say its C mixolydian, not sure if this question is still relevant but anyways hah. Great job on recreating this tune, was listening to 8ball for couple last 20minutes and was thinking if anyone has dared to to recreate this song and thank god there are people like you on youtube. Well done, sir! Enjoyed this very much and will check out massive attack vids next, already qued up 🙌
Great job. I too know this track from The Beach soundtrack too and had forgotten about it until this video. I’m gonna dig it out for this weeks driving playlist. Been following your channel for a few weeks now and I have to say that I really like the style and what you do. Keep up the great work! Cheers. Ian
This is awesome. This song has been my favorite song for like 20 years. Since I saw The Beach and bought the soundtrack on CD. I’ve always looked for covers of it. Just cuz covers are fun to watch. So this is really cool, man. Oh… and your vocals sound great! Don’t worry so much about it. Even though I feel the same about my own voice. 😂
Somehow most of Underworld's catalogue has passed me by, so this was my first listen to this track. I totally agree with what you said about this being a result of a jam session plus many many hours adjusting the mix. You're a brave man taking this one on Guy, a commendable effort!
Thanks for giving this incredible track a go! It's one of my favourite lo-fi Underworld tracks that never fails to have me drift off into a wonder filled space! Karl and Rick (and previously Darren) have been a soundtrack to me life and I am forever grateful!
One of my favourite tacks of all time which has the power to make me shed a tainted tear of joy when I’m in the mood to indulge my emotions. Thank you so much for this.
Great job, nice reminder what a great track this is 🙏 I have been a underworld fan from the beginning buying cowgirl and rez on 12" back in 92 and going to see them on the DNBWMHM tour ... amazing times .... Then came trainspotting and they just took off... Thanks for the memory 🙏🕉️👍⚛️
wow great effort man!! I've been obsessed with this track. I am a jazz pianist but I find that improv piano at the end so simple, but tasteful and beautiful. I have watched alot of live versions of this track and they just dont bother with that guitar part(s), its just on a backing track. You can see why! ha ha great effort for trying it!
I think the original sound that you've recreated with a gliding harmonium sample is actually a guitar doing bends through fuzz pedal. Really enjoying these videos! Lip-sync was spot-on.
Underworld uses a hardware audio processing unit called Kyma. I can hear quite a bit of it on the guitar part that's panned on the right side that was so odd. The one you slowed down to record. That's a large part of why it was hard to recreate - because Karl didn't play it like that either. Kyma "mangled" it. Fantastic effort though!
I just want to say that ive been following you along for the past 3 days now...and this is the most challenging thing i have ever done. thanks for the video. im gonna get back to it lol
considering just how tricky this song is, I think you did a great job. The only thing i think you really missed (as opposed to ignored for time's sake) is the vocoder on the vocal, you can hear it better in the sibilant sounds around the 7 minute mark when you isolate the l/r channels, and at around 8:35. they more than likely used a roland vp-330 (like on every other underworld song from that era)
Nice job, difficult sounds to emulate in this one. Probably even they would struggle to make it again from scratch and have it sound the same. The mode with a flat 7th is mixolydian.
love your work on this, just want to add that some elements of this song they took from a guitar that can be heard more clearly without the tweaks for this song in the beginning of their song Dobropet (the Bruce Lee single and Not the Bruce Lee demo!). they reversed and cut it up.
This is one of if not the best one you’ve done. Really good seeing you figure it out and also - not! Keep em coming sir. (This track really sounds like a public service broadcasting track. You considered a PSB track? Sputnik would be a good one)
I knew it would be a stinker to do! Such a brilliant piece of music - Underworld's finest i reckon. Fantastic effort . Keep up the good work. Some Groove Armada maybe..' If everybody looked the same'....?!
Well done there mate! Your videos are fantastic. I'm a huge Underworld fan though I'm not too crazy about this track. The bass and the groove are fantastic but I feel it lacks focus through the middle section of the track. The last few minutes are magical again. Anyway, you got really close to the original and that's very impressive indeed! There are some sonic differences but their sounds probably went through a ton of hardware. Each imparting different sonic characteristics on the sound. That's nigh on impossible to match exactly. As for your mix, I seem to remember reading once that Rick Smith in that era would spend ages on a mix. Going back and tweaking things forever. And then things would be mastered somewhere imparting another layer sonic characteristics that are nigh on impossible to match exactly. But you got close to it nonetheless. So well done you!
My favourite Underworld track, closely followed by Rez and Cowgirl. Brilliant track selection for your videos so far mate. Would like to see a video on 'She just likes to fight' by Four Tet. And Smoke Belch II by Sabres of Paradise.
Loving this channel. It’s the best. How does one go about requesting an artist? If it’s here in the comments, I’d love to see you tackle anything by Lorn.
Nice stuff. C major with an A# could be C Mixolydian (though to be pedantic that would be called B flat rather than A#). Mixolydian is common in a lot of bluesy rock and pop songs since it combines the brightness of major with the slightly funky feel of the flattened 7th.
Nicely done. Your cover is so good Google "Now Playing" recognised it as the original!!!! 👍 Always reminds me of that terrible movie The Beach. Thankfully the soundtrack saves it!! You deserve more subscribers mate. Key of the track looks (from the notes in your piano roll) and sounds like F harmonic minor to me me
Great job 👏👏 i'm a big underworld fan. you're right, the beach soundtrack is a great album. keeping it under 90mph whilst yekke yekke is on, is tricky 😎😎
Bass Guitar, Synth, Maracas, and Lead Vocals. You are a man of many talents Gyu. 👍How about having a crack at Mike Oldfield's Sentinel from Tubular Bells II?
Now I see you said it might not be a Second Toughest in the Infants track when I asked about Underworld and this album! ;) By the way, Underworld have always used the Tr 909 for kicks, according to their own statement. Greetings from Germany
This is my favourite series on youtube at the moment. The tunes you pick are always great
I agree, I'm an Ableton hobbyist and these sort of videos are invaluable to me.
I get the feeling we are all into the same music on this channel
The most underrated dance act of the UK, brilliant as always.
100% agree. dubnobass/Second Toughest/Beaucoup Fish has to be one the best 3-album stretches for any artist of all time.
Love your ambition taking this on mate and despite your own subtle self deprecation I think you did a stella job! More Underworld please!!!
The parts of your videos where you're just in awe, listening to the original track, are so good -- please always include them

8 Ball is my favorite UNDERWORLD tracks of all times...also THE BEACH Motion Picture Soundtrack is my No.1 favorite soundtrack album
You Beautiful Man ..... Yet another awesome video .... You make me feel "HAPPY"
Great work mate...
20:42. I can feel exactly what you are feeling at that time 😂
Still catch myself coming back to these older videos, Great series. The Beach soundtrack is one of my favourites too, love that little story. Amazing job man
best soundtrack in history. indeed
underworld was my number 1 bucket list band. saw them at movement fest last Memorial Day. I’m still in heaven- they played kittens and cups!!!
really interesting series mate, my kits all out of action while I solder a million cables for the mixer and patch panels so a nice watch for me this .

Love, love, love this track! It's my ringtone on my phone
Best episode yet... probably because I love this song to death. You're going from strength to strength with these videos. Big love.
Thanks! Yeah it's a slightly obscure one so it's not doing that well but I love the track so it had to be done :)
Well done on unravelling that beautiful track, made me feel.... Happy☺️
Happy to hear that!
Great choice......a kind of obscure underworld track but a longtime favourite. Keep them coming

So true! That's what I'm trying to do - get away from that sterile sound
Your vocals were great!
Thankyou for introducing me to a great track I had missed.

Chemical Brothers Escape Velocity? 😀

Another amazing video, and a personal observation. Has anyone mentioned that your singing voice has a Thomas Dolby like quality?
Please Please Please make Underworld - King of Snake. My favourite song ever.
And next Underworld track to do - And I Will Kiss! Good luck with that. There's over 120 separate stems on that one!

That sounds right. C mixolydian uses the same notes as F major, doesn't it? (All the white keys on a piano, except with Bb instead of B).
Exellent breakdown , refreshing to learn about a non synthy track , tuvm :d

you know that piano reminds me of what a sample n hold'd noise going into a quantizer that plays a piano might sound like.
Your vocals weren't bad at all, but I found the lip-synching even more enjoyable! That "happy" bit was quite euphoric.
Excellent effort. Really shows just how beautifully euphoric a tune EightBall is. All hail Rick and Karl.
Any chance of Filthy by Saint Etienne?
Can never work out why this is the only UW tune you can hear a guitar in but yet you see Karl play one in other tunes but never ever hear it

Nice! Is there not a vocoder on the vocals?
Exactly, I’m not sure they ever did a track without at least some vocoder.
