as a heavy main i can answer this easily see the answer is twofold, the first being the more obvious of the two retreating in the middle of a firefight is kind of a non-option for us. sure we can dip behind a nearby wall for cover but our movement more or less forces us to adopt the doctrine of "we don't half ass anything". if we move to a position we are committed to that position regardless of what situation that position is in when we get there. all you other guys have the freedom to change your decision after the fact. except maybe the soldier. and that's part of what separates a good heavy from a bad heavy. in order to maximize our effectiveness, we have to know more or less exactly what things are going to be like in any given place before we get there. we will kill the enemy or buy you time. as much as it may hurt you deep inside, we will almost always die in the positions we put ourselves in. now the second answer is less obvious but also the simplest. we don't play heavy to be babies. we are big angry gorillas with no concept of self preservation. our minds are focused on one thing and one thing only. devastation. self preservation is a concept for babies, medical practitioners and utility workers and we are none of those things. we will die with hope, however false, that our sacrifice (however dumb) will not be in vain. we tend our gun we shoot our gun and sometimes we contemplate literature it ain't much but it's honest work
