In 97 you can see the fear and despair on Griffith face, when 200-pound sword come down over his head
Right, so much more emotion in it, this is an example of how it was made worse
Same thing with the new version. There's no difference other than graphical enhancement, the manga did it best though, same expression and emotion Just deeper and more detailed
@Cyrustheachaemenid3 he is almost viper like in his appearance. He is lean, and elegant, but will coil and strike without hesitation as we can see by his lunge towards Guts. The 2022 version, while he does look intimidating, you can see it at all times. It is not as subtle as the 97.
That sword would only be about 25-50 pounds
The Dragon Slayer he gets later on however is estimated to be about 400 lbs
@Cyrustheachaemenid3 the 2022 version looks more like manga griffith but it still doesn't do him justice, he's supposed to look ethereal and delicate

97 is incredible
can u belive that every frame in it was animated on paper by the animators
Manga is the best
It's ok
It's a power point presentation
The only adaptation that give justice to the manga if only they had animated everything
The effort of Guts trying to launch a controlled attack and hold back in the very second is represented way better in the old version. Thank you for the video
Definitely think you're wrong. You can barely tell what 1997 is trying to convey with the many awkward cuts. I think both scenes poorly show that guts is holding back, but so does the manga, nobody expected guts to pull a punch and he still did despite the massive weight of his blade. It's much more impactful and shown with the 2022 that focuses on the interaction entirely, without jumping to random unnecessary closeups.
Disagree hard.
@@xpumbrelladx9360 You're right and wrong at the same time. You can't tell that Guts is attempting to control his strike in order to not harm Griffith; which is a perfect. Instead you get a sense of "oh my god, he's looks like he's trying to kill him", which is something we've not seen Guts struggle with throughout the show. It does this so that when you finally get the realization that he used all that effort to make sure he'd avoid hitting Griffith (while also winning the duel), it hits that much harder.
In the 2022 version, the only weight in his swing seems to come from the thrust of wind. While in the 97 version, the weight is anticipated beginning with the first movement.
Personally in one of the frames in the 1997 version Guts looks like he's about to fall flat on his bum
Respectfully I gotta disagree, the simgle strand of hair beimg severed in the new one was a beautiful touch. It conveyed his restraint in the moment perfectly

The darker shades, music, the way everything was drawn and the VAs at the time make the 97 one feel so much more majestic. It's been the only worthy adaptation so far and it's honestly a masterpiece. I don't really watch anime anymore like I did in school but the 97 Berserk is one I always revisit even now as an adult years later.
I finally managed to watch the full 97 anine when it came to netflix this year and it was such a blast. One of my favorite animes
Just an observation, but in the 2022 version, it looks as if Griffith is in disbelief. In contrast, however, in the 1997 version, Griffith has a look that resembles fear.
Just something I found interesting.
i do think that was the intention. This moment is meant to signify that guts no longer has any need for griffith, and so he feels as though he has lost a major part of himself. He never thought that guts could ever live without him, and that mistake cost him greatly.
I mean right on the money. Griffith made guts his personal weapon. He was his arm. And guts wanting to leave was akin to him losing a part of himself. So when he lost there was fear and disbelief. This man he so easily bested, that he brought to heel is now towering over him and Griffith lost his focus. What i love the most is guts in his inner monologue saying you can get passed. Truly believing he wasn't important
It makes sense to feel afraid. If it weren't for the fact that Guts appreciated him very much, Griffith would have died.
97 Berserk puts you in Griffith perspective
@fedoradaveneckbeardextraor2155 Wym no need for Griffith? He as sleeving because he served his time but forgot he was owned by griffith.
The director from the 1997 knew how to tell a story and make it impactful. The 2022 visuals were good but that’s it.
The only problem with the 1997 anime was the lack of the skull knight
I think the reason why Skull Knight was never in the 1997 anime was because his design would be too hard to animate and I would imagine he would be very expensive given how the 97 anime didn’t had a very height budget that and Skull Knight didn’t appear much in the original manga I don’t even think he had more than 5 scenes in the manga, although this is only my observation
I think because it was the lack of manga that where issued at the time. They didn’t have enough material to continue. I am not to sure tho
I also wouldve liked to see wyald just so that you can get the grasp of just how powerful guts was even before the eclipse. He went into it physically broken and exhausted due to that fight and still was capable of defending himself from demonkind until he was pinned.
@@Sir_Jonathan_TheSilverKnightskull night appears before the eclipse tho, so thats not a reason not to ibclude him
There were lots of problem, pacing was horrible and thousands of scenes were cut down
Moment he lost he decided to become a villain
I don’t know what hut Griffith more
1. The realization that he actually lost for the first time in his life
2. The realization of the thought of reality of losing Guts
3. The realization of being the underdog unground of his most trusted knights that looks up to him
4. The thought of his plan falling and crumbling through his fingers right at the edge of success
Also the realization he was losing his greatest friend and lover.
All he had to was not run his mouth about True Friends while trying impress Charlotte

honestly Griffith is one of those people who seem to be an all knowing and caring leader who seem to be after your own good, but in reality they are sociopaths who are only doing this cause this gives them a sense of power and control, this duel between Gut's and Griffith exposed that as Griffith realized that the once weaker and inferior Guts is now stronger than him and doesn't need him anymore, i feel bad for the Hawks but i guess Berserk really captures how a very good Sociopath can be really dangerous and deceiving, how they would sacrifice everything for their goals
The amount of muscle control and strength it would take to stop that overhead swing with that sword? Oof, Griffith is definitely seeing his life flash before his eyes.

1997: you felt griff was super powerful, he had trained hard and couldn’t be defeated easily until guts literally stopped him like an impenetrable wall

Guts was the perfect being. Even with a lost limb and an arm, he defeated most of his enemies while being human.
Even using the armor that turns him into a perfect killing machine requires him to be a God among men to wear it or else die from the transformation alone.
What other limb are you talking about beside his arm?
I get shivers down my spine every time Griffith does that stare in the 1997 version. You already know their fate is sealed then boom they pull out the flute song.

The original was much more inpactful, especially How Grffiths hair is messed up, symbolizing how much this moment really broke him.
I love how before Griffith was so strong he could parry Guts' attacks because Guts was uncontrollable unable to control himself, and when Griffith took him in his band he had grown dependent on Guts, but over the years Guts grew more self control and Griffith underestimated him for a man who would never leave the only friends he has and is just a brute. Studio 4C needs to animate an entire series, idc of the seasons are a year or two apart. The black swordsman/conviction/millennium falcon war arcs DESERVE to be properly remade, and fantasia deserves to get an adaptation. That or studio Wit, considering they made the first three seasons of AOT and Vinland saga.
The genius of the scene in the manga is not that guts over powered Griffith...its that he showed restraint where as Griffith knew he would only win if he went for the kill, without holding back. Restraint...is the mark of mastery.

In the first anime and manga, guts is using his usual Sword to assassinate Julius and adonis and to run away from the guard.. i mean, he is littéraly the ONLY guy to carry a Sword that Big ! The remake of berserk is more comic accurate but I really prefer 1997 version tho.
Griffith from the 2022 version looks fundamentally shocked from someone actually standing up against him. While the og looks like he is seething with silent anger.
The 90s made art with pure passion, sweat, and talent. I can't enjoy a lot of these remakes with their flat textures and non-ridiculous hair.
2022 when they actually animated was really fucking clean of they would've made the while series as quality as this short clip no one would've complained.
Bring bacc 90s art/animation. It captured the dynamic perplexities of combat and encounters...
