  • Relays are often misunderstood but are very simple in design and easy to use. In this video we give you an overview of how a relay works and why you should use them when installing electronic accessories in your car. Especially if you have a car with an older electrical system that wasn't made to take the load of todays accessories.

    HOLY COW.. THANK YOU. I have had alot of trouble understanding the "WHY" behind using a relay. Most people just say.. "it's safer" and offer no REAL info. GREAT VIDEO. Now I need 4 relays I guess for my AUX lights.

    That was the best explanation I have seen yet. I understand how and why, and will from now on be sure to use one on all my aftermarket applications.

    It took me long enough to figure it out,but it think it protects a circuit like the inginion switch on a car,it goes to a relay to power a starter motor. of course you have to get the right one for how many amps I think.I thought relays were more complicated but it looks like all they are is electromagnetic switches. I could set a horn on the car from the ignition to a relay to power another horn with a toggle switch.thanks for the video

    Great video! So they are pretty much like a solenoid, right? I've got a 1970 scout which I'm wiring new spot and flood light onto. Original elect. Circuits. Will I need one relay per light?

    I can answer that for you sir ..the 3rd pin is for the led you wire it separate so when the switch is on you can tell by visual hence LED...a 2 pin is used when you don't need an visual/ led reference.. hope that helped

    For the coil, does it matter which end is positive and negative? I'm preddy sure it will produce the magnetic field either way but I want to know for sure.

    I appreciate the info, wasn't sure why I needed to run a relay opposed to just an inline fuse. This cleared it up. Why do I still need to run an inline fuse? I am assuming its to protect the relay since there usually more expensive and harder to get to. Please confirm for me whether i'm right or not. Thanks

  • @MrJonjon1st
    @MrJonjon1st 12 лет назад

    on 87 diagram,how much amp did you use for the fuse?and for the switch 85,is that the same voltage as the 87 would be, with fuse?
    lets say the fan is 12 volts..

  • @eddie947

    I got a relay not for my horn or lights but for my amplifier because it gets really hot hence I got some computer fans to cool it down. I got a relay and wired it to the remote turn on from my car stereo so when my radio is turned on the fans turn on as well to cool down my amp.

    Can you recommend a cheap, 30 amp, 120 volt relay I can control with either 12 or 120 volt?

  • @125varma
    @125varma 12 лет назад

    What is the maximum speed that a relay can osculate? I mean for example if I have a 555 time circuit that drives the relay, how much would the be maximum frequency which I could get out of the relay? Lets say 555 circuit can go up to 200Khz. Regards

  • @goodman854

    I'm sure you wont respond cause this is an old video but can I use a relay rated for 220 volts 30 amps, on a 110 volt lower amp device?

  • @supermanotorious
    @supermanotorious 12 лет назад

    so you need a dedicated 12v+ line to actually power the device correct? the 12v+ ignition or switch lead can be spliced off anything?
