I love all these little angles you always come up with that the average person might need to deal with one day for whatever reason. I am glad you made a point of noticing and pointing out that this helped defrost your shelter whereas normally without this lit -- it would have been frosted up. Thanks man, keep up the good work Wayne. It is good you can laugh at the stuff that happens, I appreciate that too lol.
+Barry Dutton Thanks Barry, glad you enjoyed the little warming shelter idea. thought why not try it and share it. I like the UCO lantern, it has its benefits. :)ATB.
This has been done with ponchos with a candle by many folks. Care has to be taken, that is why im using the candle holder, no exposed flame. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
As in the UK cost of living crisis this works well in any enclosed fabric just wanted to say thanks this is going to be my emergancy keep warm in winter method as can't afford the central heating
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival Very cool,i figured this would be a good option to take the chill off. :) Take care of yourself buddy, apprecaite you watching and commenting.
This is a real good application of both tarp and candle lamp. I have had my candle lamp 34 years. Candles get soft in summer and misform when in sitting in pack. It is great lamp.. Best
I knew a guy who was a US Air Force cop and stationed in Germany. He told me they used to dig a little hole, build a little fire in the hole and put on a poncho. It was a stationary guard post and he said that it worked pretty good.
Yea, we did that at Rhine Main AFB in the 80's. we would basically be sitting in a hole shoulder deep with the poncho over our head. Poncho laid out on the ground and a single charcoal briquette (saturated with alcohol) burning in a can - or a candle. Actually worked pretty well.
I am wondering if you build a small tripod and hung the light and then put it between your legs or in there with you if that would provide a little more stability and almost like a safety barricade so you don’t actually touch the light especially if you fell asleep under there
I've got one of the original ones in brass,...had it now for about 30yrs.. Been doing this for a long time. With an 8x10 tarp or full size rain poncho, I find the heat is pleny warm to ward off hypothermia. I carry it in my fanny pack at all times in the bush. I use it as an emergency heat source more than a light source. but in a pinch it does supply some limited light. PLay with it a bit more Wayne, I'm sure you'll find the right set up for it and you'll be amazed just how much heat the little bugger does throw off. All the best,..peace.
+WoodlandGhost Thank you, for the info, and nice to hear people use these for years and still love them. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching . Peace Bro.
Great info. I'm going to give this a try next year on the good old deer stand. I have a heavy emergency blanket in forest green. I tried a canned fuel one time but it was just too much heat. I didn't think of using a candle. I recently went to a Thrift Store in my travels and purchased several hundred tea candles for a few bucks. I think I will try the micro out. Thanks
tealights are a great thing to carry and can keep you from getting chilled, the small Asian kerosene lanterns will keep a small tent dry and stop damp from penetrating, two can give a bit of heat, I also use alcohol lamps and a half inch wick can keep you. warm or use a Tiki torch with alcohol but put fiberglass insulation in the can to make it spill resistant
I have the same lantern and have had to clean the lens many times. Bashing my head against it in the tent as forget it is there!! I prefer the white candle to the beeswax and citronella. The beeswax is much softer and does run over and pos might even attract bears if in your area!! Enjoyed watching. Cheers Mary
+K Johnston Nice , thanks for the info. I believe you had a video on sleeping in a poncho against a tree awhile back and how it can be a good shelter and many soldiers slept that way. I took that and the idea of the candle under a poncho, to use these two items. atb
I've tried this just recently. I tested this out in the woods for about an hour and a half. I was fairly warm, but I started seeing condensation begin to build up inside the blanket. For a short time, this seems to work, but for an all night situation, I wonder if there would be too much moisture, to the point of getting clothes damp. I've decided it might work if the cover is breathable, but with something like a mylar space blanket, I saw issues with it. Your mileage may vary.
This was used by many soldiers with ponchos, im told. I didnt have an issue with moisture but it could be a factor at times. Thanks for the info and watch.
@@kullcraven I've heard the same thing and it seems like a pouncho could have the same issue. I don't claim to be an expert, so maybe there was something at play that I'm not taking into consideration, I don't know. Your video sent me on a search for that lantern, the open flame is a little precarious under a blanket!
@@mcramblet many factors can create condensation, humidity in the air, the cold outside air, and warm inside air, so that could have been your problem. I had alittle air flow from underneath, so it got warm but not real warm. OK Brother Kull...now I'm wondering...You've seen the 2 person tent I have purchased from Walmart...If I were to drape a sheet of plastic over the entire tent and seal it off for the most part...and of course still have oxygen....lol. would it then heat up the tent? This I am wondering...and if not by itself would a pair of candles of this nature do the job...Don't worry I shall not try this unless it is daylight and I'm fully awake to see...but to heat a tent at night would be awesome without a stove and all that dangerous chances taken with an open flame...just wondering of course....hummmmn

What a bright idea... ;) I use mine in my tent while winter camping all the time, makes getting out of the bag in the morning much more pleasant... 2 other scout leaders and I did an experiment a few years ago, and lighting the candle at 7am, in December, after 15 min. 2 of us noted a 5C increase, and the 3rd a 4C increase ( she had a slightly bigger tent... +trollforge HAHA waxident , that was awesome, and made me chuckle lol. I had a big tarp shelter set up and i didnt feel a difference but i was also in -17c temps. lol Thank you very much for the info . ATB my friend.
build a nest behind you of bows..dig a small hole between your legs to accept the lantern drive to stakes on each side of lantern to keep legs from closeing over it..tuck corner of tarp under crossed legs in center then pull upper point over head and tuck behind you..draft fresh air in by ajusting sides..or tuck top of tarp like a dinner napkin in front of shirt to leave head out...nice video i really enjoyed it safe journeys
+blackoracle69 You are very correct, i just did this to try the effectiveness of the candle. If you noticed i picked a small tree to lean against. The reason why, the cold in that entire tree will be conducted into your back, so you would want to pile brush behind you . Putting sticks between your legs to hold them from closing is a good idea. I would sleep like this, just use this for warming and moving onward. Thanks for the great tips buddy and appreciate you commenting and watching ATB.

stick with the fabric backed "heavy duty" space blankets. Yes, there's more bulk and a bit more weight, but they are about 10x more effective and easier to work with. I've sat there like that for several hours in the rain and wind, and man, does it ever SUCK, even with the heavy duty mylar variant. i greatly prefer to make it into a 'bag" configuration, with velcro all around, and have another 'breathable' variant of Mylar and velcro inside of the heavy duty one, to deal with the condensation. A monofilament gillnet hammock to get you up off of the cold, hard, rocky ground adds less than a lb and can feed you if need be.

They do work good. have a good one.
didn't look to comfortable but guess it would work
+wildernesscamp 85 Comfort has nothing to do with survival. lol Altho this was comfortable actually, to sit and warm up. Many soldiers leaned up against something , even a tree and slept with a poncho sitting up. Tho i wouldnt sleep with a candle between my legs lol
Good video. I don't think I'd want an open candle in that shelter either. atb Opal
+Opal Preston Shirley LOL they use open candles in ponchos for heat, thought this was a good alternative. :) ATB

steve
+so steve I have heard that some have with their ponchos and a open candle, if they had one, most dont have candles. Thought this would work for people that have emergency blankets and candles for a carry :) ATB dude.
If you got wet in the cold with this and a poncho could save you.
This can help trap body heat, as well as candle heat. So yes it could help save you. Thanks for the watch and comment. :)

+Дмитрич thanks :)
Let us hope it never comes to this for anyone. If it does, any help is better than none.
Indeed, this will work and many people sat like this for a night, to stay warm. Using a poncho and small heat source.
Now that's some funny shit
Warm, wind breaker and funny. that was my goal. :)
I LOOKED IT UP IT IS 1900 BTOS
You looked what up, the heat of a candle?
Kullcraven Bushcraft & Survival MEC website says it makes 190o BTUs
Thanks :)
That's what it says
I love my UCO candle lantern. You should try the Survival Stand as a base for your candle lantern. It makes it much more stable. Available on Amazon.ca or go to www.princeinnovation.ca
Thanks for the tip and watch. :)
