DIY Altoids Tin Candle Lantern Box
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 мар 2019
- Taken from a Civil War design, this is a simple way to make a candle reflector that can hold and store up to three common candles as well as a book of matches. It uses one Altoids tin as well as some common items that I sourced around the home.

Dude your awsome. I live for this stuff.i love ruffing it
A candle and an emergency blanket can be a life saver in cold climates. A guy sat down against a tree, draped a blanket over himself and lit a candle under the blanket. He raised the temp under the blanket to 50 degrees F while the outside temp was 24 degrees so this seems to be a great idea. And I've got an extra Altiods tin.
LED lanterns are so cheap to buy but a small candle lantern provides a real morale boost when it's really cold. That's something a LED lantern can't do. Great idea so thank you.
Thank you for watching!
Agreed my man! Something just hardwired into us on the primal level.
The comfort of fire and light.
I love how the utube algorithm is giving me your old videos to check out! This is AGAIN brilliant!
Thanks so much, I'm glad that you're enjoying watching this older content!
Alternatively you could use the wire (or an old piece of coat hanger) to create a prop for the lid, put some tealight candles inside, and that way the propped up the lid helps to protect your jacket/emergency blanket and the flame from getting at each other. You can easily fit two 4-6 hour tealight candles in the can, and have room for things like matches, fire tinder, or maybe even a tiny lighter. Bonus: If you use 100% beeswax candles, you have lip balm as well.
Sure, you could do that.
I love this - a small tin with 3 hours or more of emergency light!
Thank you!
And some heat
Yes, it would be very good for that also!

Awesome idea, thank you for sharing. I live in Europe, so I was able to get some Altoids tins from family in the US. I made this lantern with my Dad, really happy the "Waypoint Lantern," it's going right in my haversack.
Thank you so much! Really glad you like it!
What a fantastic project! I think I should make some Waypoint Lanterns as small gifts for friends and family that enjoy camping and hiking. Christmas is around the corner, after all. 😀
Very cool. Glad you liked it!

Awesome little kit. Light brings with it the comfort of seeing around you. I'll make one of these to keep in our vehicles.
Excellent, thanks for watching!
What a great idea. I enjoy your video's because you give us practical ways to do things with simple items. Thank you and God bless you and your family.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad that you enjoy them and find them useful. God bless you all as well!
Sweet. I love and respect your knowledge and enthusiasm. I have good friends whom I love dearly. None of them share my joy of camping and bush craft. Wish I knew some one like you. I was ill, and not been out much, but now that I am healed and getting up to speed, look forward to using all the great knowledge you have shared with me! God Bless!
Thank you! I don't know where you live, but maybe you could come and train with me sometime. I post my class times on my website at www.waypointsurvival.com and also on my FaceBook page @ WayPoint Survival.
@@WayPointSurvival Northern Mn. Thank You. you are on my short to do list.
Ingenious! Historically accurate! Practical; economical, & muti-functional! Glue a striker strip inside one of the edges & include some wooden matches (Lucifers). More DIY Civil War projects would be greatly appreciated!! I find your 1790 series exceptionally meaningful because that is one of the historical periods which I am still re-enacting at age 82. I also enjoy Civil War living history events & more DIY projects. It appears that much of the DIY gear used by Hoboes was based on Civil War DIY projects bt solders in the field who utilized every resource.. I am revisiting many of your videos while recovering from the latest strain of Covid. Your prayers will be appreciated. Thanks again, & God bless you.
Excellent! That's a good point about the hobos and the Civil War gear. Hope you get well soon and God bless you too!
For anyone that is interested in another use for empty Altoids tins. I took one of these after I cut off the two striking strips from an empty box of matches and then epoxied one on each side of the tin. And bam, instant metal match box! Which not only holds the big type of matches (not the super long ones you use to light a fireplace obviously) but can also hold some tinder/shavings you can use to help you start a fire as well if you need to. I'd personally recommend putting it inside a ziploc bag (or any good, thick plastic bag which seals well) to help keep moisture away from your matches and tinder/shavings before you throw it in either a pocket or your bag/backpack.
Indeed. There are many uses for these amazing tins!
@@WayPointSurvival I've even used them to put some old, discarded blue jean material (thick as you can get) in,closed the lid and then put it in a hot bed of coals for a little while. Take the tin off the fire and let it cool until it's cooled completely, pop it open and then presto. Easy DIY charcloth ready to use. You are supposed to be able to use natural rope (like jute, cotton or something like that) and make a similar thing to char cloth. BUT I have not actually tried this myself though,so I'd rather not tout something that I myself have not tried and cannot personally verify the results.
P.s. I personally would NOT make a hole at the top of the tin before putting it in the fire. You do need a small bit of ventilation to allow the gases and etc. from the material to escape (or the lid might pop off). The small slits in the back of the tin for the hinge SHOULD work just fine for that though. Too much ventilation could cause your charcloth to burn up of you aren't careful though.
Good job I love the little box light
Okay, I'm in love with this concept. Such a rudimentary project, perfect for the whole bushcraft aesthetic
Thank you so much, glad you liked it!

Thank you so much, glad you're enjoying the channel and welcome aboard!
Great idea. Never saw this before on any other channel. Gonna have to give this one a try. Thanks.
Great, glad you liked it and thank you for watching!
A most interesting demonstration. The tin is compact and could easy be packed away in a Haversack or rucksack. I suppose you could also rig some type of hanger to hang the lantern from a tree limb. Room inside to hold extra candles and matches. I’m going to make this a project. Thanks for sharing. - Tennessee Smoky
Thanks!
I've seen one like this and I can't remember where, they used an Altoids tin and what looked like a hose clamp soldered to a hinge that used tea candles. They had polished the inside to act like a mirror to disperse light. I like the idea of a larger candle a lot more, and I would still polish up the inside. Thanks for the great tip 👍
Thanks for watching and I'm glad that you liked it!
Now I know what to do with some of those Altoids tins I have. One in each car. Thanks James. 😊
Awesome project and video, I’ll have to make at least one! I agree that a candle is a very useful survival item, maybe you could do a video on it’s many uses sometime? Thanks for sharing your talents and creativity once again.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching the video!
My family loved this idea! Thank you for the video and the great instructions. We each made one today!

Thank you!
Always a clever ideas you have. Very nice video thank you 😊👍
Thanks so much 😊
i 3d print inserts for mini kits for these tins. this is a good idea too. but i do like fishing kits, fire kits, first aid, or inserts for anything you would need. these tins are the most versatile piece of kit you can have
Very cool idea. I use Altoids tins for so many things I have to spray paint them different colors so I know what they are LOL of course not the one I use for char cloth because it's all dark from the fire. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
So making one for my camping bag and bug out bag !! Thanks again for a wonderful IDEA !!

Great idea.
Thanks, Thaddeus!
Cool idea thanks for sharing with us
Thank you!
Simple and clever.
Thank you!
great idea. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!
That is a very neat idea!! I really like this and I will have to make one of these. It will also make a great rainy day project for my Pathfinder Youth Group. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to polish the inside of the tin up to get a more reflective finish? I may give it a try just to see. Thank you so much James for all you share. Take care and God bless.
I thought about polishing it with chocolate, just like you would do the bottom of an aluminum can for fire starting. Then, you could polish off the chocolate.... Seriously, that would make it more reflective. God bless!
I like his videos there cool thanks
That is ingenious
Thanks!
Cool project for sure.
Thank you!
Neat trick brother. Handy dandy.
Thanks, Chief!
Dude you're channel has grown so much and I really love you're videos. If I has the money to give you I'd Totally do it
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Muy práctico...gracias
De nada!
I like the stove ideas well where the tin is basically packed with rolled cardboard and wax and it burns like a big candle that can boil water.
They are less work, but kind of annoying to have to melt down the wax.
Yes, they are pretty cool but as you stated they are a little finicky to make. Thank you for watching and commenting!
We did the same thing with with cardboard/wax using small soup cans in scouts back in the 70s.
Try tearing your cardboard at an angle so that as it burns further and further it burns lower and lower 😊
thats awesome i would try to put a small mirror in the lid side for reflective purposes when i make mine
Good idea, but actually the 10 itself is reflective enough for the light. Thank you for watching.
My dad used to call those gopher matches. Strike one and "go for" another one 😆
Lol. Thank you for watching!
Excellent
Thanks for watching!
You could cut a little piece of rubber or silicone or similar material and make it into a little gasket so water can’t get in through the screw hole when the tin is closed.
Yes, that would work. You could also tape around the lid with electrical tape for a similar result.
Brilliant!
Thank you so much. To God be the glory, He actually gave me the idea one Sunday morning!
@@WayPointSurvival Share the light! God bless.
Good idea to use up extra tins!
Thank you!
WayPoint Survival, This was the first video of yours I watched. Subscribed right after!
Thank you! Just now found your comment and wanted to reply to you. RUclips only shows me the newer comments on my videos. I have to physically scroll through each one of them to find the older comments.
Nifty. I can relate to not wanting to toss the Altoids tin. I have a pill prescription that comes in a bottle of nearly a half liter in size. I just HATE to toss them to the recyclers. But, alas, when one gets a whole box full, it is time to let a few go. Thanks for the candle box tip. Be safe, and keep breathin'.
Thank you!
Geocachers would love those to wrap in camo duct tape, fill, and place out in the wild.
Would love to have seen how bright it is at night. I’ll have to see for myself!
That is cool I like this guy he teaches us a lot of things god bless him aman
Love it!
Thank you!
I would never have thought of this or the chicken can charcoal grill. Thank you we never know when we. May be reduced to having the resort to using these ideas.
Thank you for watching and I'm glad you liked it!
A recently emptied can of beer cut open in the shape of a capital I . Open the doors and set your candle. If you need a wind shield from the wind so you can walk with it? Get a 2 liter bottle and cut the top off to fit over the can and hang the can from a length of wire
Thanks for watching.
Very cool
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing !
You're welcome!
SO NEAT...THANKS
Thank you for watching!
Perfect made, one suggestion did you know if you take a pice of news paper wetterout and cover the candles they take a lot longer to burn
I did not know that. Thanks for sharing it with me. I will have to check that out. Thanks for watching and for commenting also!
Genius!
Cool! I love those altoids tins, always looking for neat things to do with them. I had seen a candle holder tin before, not full instructions but I liked the idea. I like your design better with the wire, so much easier to source and make than the one I saw. Do you think that 3 of those long burn UCO candles would fit in it?
Maybe. Thanks for watching.
