  • Taken from a Civil War design, this is a simple way to make a candle reflector that can hold and store up to three common candles as well as a book of matches. It uses one Altoids tin as well as some common items that I sourced around the home.

    A candle and an emergency blanket can be a life saver in cold climates. A guy sat down against a tree, draped a blanket over himself and lit a candle under the blanket. He raised the temp under the blanket to 50 degrees F while the outside temp was 24 degrees so this seems to be a great idea. And I've got an extra Altiods tin.

    LED lanterns are so cheap to buy but a small candle lantern provides a real morale boost when it's really cold. That's something a LED lantern can't do. Great idea so thank you.

    Alternatively you could use the wire (or an old piece of coat hanger) to create a prop for the lid, put some tealight candles inside, and that way the propped up the lid helps to protect your jacket/emergency blanket and the flame from getting at each other. You can easily fit two 4-6 hour tealight candles in the can, and have room for things like matches, fire tinder, or maybe even a tiny lighter. Bonus: If you use 100% beeswax candles, you have lip balm as well.

    Ingenious! Historically accurate! Practical; economical, & muti-functional! Glue a striker strip inside one of the edges & include some wooden matches (Lucifers). More DIY Civil War projects would be greatly appreciated!! I find your 1790 series exceptionally meaningful because that is one of the historical periods which I am still re-enacting at age 82. I also enjoy Civil War living history events & more DIY projects. It appears that much of the DIY gear used by Hoboes was based on Civil War DIY projects bt solders in the field who utilized every resource.. I am revisiting many of your videos while recovering from the latest strain of Covid. Your prayers will be appreciated. Thanks again, & God bless you.

    For anyone that is interested in another use for empty Altoids tins. I took one of these after I cut off the two striking strips from an empty box of matches and then epoxied one on each side of the tin. And bam,instant metal match box! Which not only holds the big type of matches (not the super long ones you use to light a fireplace obviously) but can also hold some tinder/shavings you can use to help you start a fire as well if you need to. I'd personally recommend putting it inside a ziploc bag (or any good,thick plastic bag which seals well) to help keep moisture away from your matches and tinder/shavings before you throw it in either a pocket or your bag/backpack.

    • @WayPointSurvival
      @WayPointSurvival  2 года назад +2

      Indeed. There are many uses for these amazing tins!

    • @mr.chaosvicious5968
      @mr.chaosvicious5968 2 года назад +2

      @@WayPointSurvival I've even used them to put some old,discarded blue jean material (thick as you can get) in,closed the lid and then put it in a hot bed of coals for a little while. Take the tin off the fire and let it cool until it's cooled completely,pop it open and then presto. Easy DIY charcloth ready to use. You are supposed to be able to use natural rope (like jute,cotton or something like that) and make a similar thing to char cloth. BUT I have not actually tried this myself though,so I'd rather not tout something that I myself have not tried and cannot personally verify the results.
      P.s. I personally would NOT make a hole at the top of the tin before putting it in the fire. You do need a small bit of ventilation to allow the gases and etc. from the material to escape (or the lid might pop off). The small slits in the back of the tin for the hinge SHOULD work just fine for that though. Too much ventilation could cause your charcloth to burn up of you aren't careful though.

    A most interesting demonstration. The tin is compact and could easy be packed away in a Haversack or rucksack. I suppose you could also rig some type of hanger to hang the lantern from a tree limb. Room inside to hold extra candles and matches. I’m going to make this a project. Thanks for sharing. - Tennessee Smoky

    I've seen one like this and I can't remember where, they used an Altoids tin and what looked like a hose clamp soldered to a hinge that used tea candles. They had polished the inside to act like a mirror to disperse light. I like the idea of a larger candle a lot more, and I would still polish up the inside. Thanks for the great tip 👍

    Cool! I love those altoids tins, always looking for neat things to do with them. I had seen a candle holder tin before, not full instructions but I liked the idea. I like your design better with the wire, so much easier to source and make than the one I saw. Do you think that 3 of those long burn UCO candles would fit in it?
