    Our kids are grown as are the grandkids and we both dislike living in the city. So we sold our house and put a tiny home on my mother in laws property. Our garden will be small this year, but next year we already have plans. Great haul!!

    It’s so wonderful that you can live off your land in a huge way. It’s healthier and a wonderful education for your children! We’re in the city but in the summer I grow tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, snap peas and potatoes for our family. We also have a couple apple trees, blueberry and raspberry bushes, strawberry plants and blackberries are plentiful here for foraging. We buy peaches, blueberries and strawberries in bulk and I can them for winter plus make a years worth of jam. We also make our own bread, which we know a lot of people do around us. There’s plenty that can be done even in a small space! We may eventually move to the country but I think it’s a mindset and work ethic; skills can be grown no matter where we are planted, and built upon year after year!

    Figure your grocery bill after you figure in your animal costs including grains, fencing, straw, pasture rental, medical, butcher packaging, freezer, electricity for freezer, incubators, animal bottles, tools, feeders, and sheds, etc..
    That in reality is your total budget.
    The plus is you know you’re getting quality food so you get what what you pay for as you said, but there’s costs that people may not realize and compare their budget to yours so it would be full disclosure to reveal production and storage costs.
    It’s the same with gardening - seeds, tomato cages or wire, matting, fencing, canning jars, canner, dehydrator, parchment paper, storage bucket, wheat grinder, etc.. There’s a lot of costs to gardening. Some is initial expense but then on a $300 item that may last you 5 years, then you still have an expense of $60 per year.
    Freezers are expensive to run as well. They can cost $50 per month. It may not be a lot per month but it adds up.
    Glad you’re feeling better.
    In my time zone we figure Mother’s Day for planting so you’re way ahead of me.

    I admire much of what you do. But I have difficulty reconciling how you recommend cooking instructions in Nourishing Traditions and then buy chips and processed meats. Someone said if your great grandmother wouldn't recognize it, DON'T EAT IT. I find that's a good. Criteria when shopping. People are so unhealthy today because our government allows big food companies to actually poison us.

      We all do our best and if most of what they eat is healthy homegrown food, they are doing better that 99.9% of the rest of us! I wish I could do a fraction of what this family does!

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  4 месяца назад +5

      I do understand your point of view. Right now moderation is the best fit for us. I had a close family member who was so consumed with being 100% pure in everything she ate, drank, etc, that it ended up taking over her life until she eventually passed away.
      It made me realize that although I want to pursue healthy living, I don’t want to be extreme about it or allow it to lead me into a life of fear.
      Doing things like soaking beans or grains is something simple that I can do for our health and doesn’t take much time, so I do it. Each person should evaluate their current circumstances and do what works for them ❤️

      Having a healthy and common sense mindset around food is very important. Some food is good for your body and other is good for treating yourself it's all about balance.
