The United States of America and Australia are similar in size yet very different in the way they have been divided into states. This states song aims to highlight this difference in a humorous way and also to help kids memorize the 50 American states. The lyrics get faster and faster as the states and DC are recited in order and then the music slows down again when the 6 states and 2 territories of Australia are shown.
We have set the lyrics to what we hope is catchy music to aid in the memorization process. Even for children and adults who don't live in the USA or Australia, an awareness of the 50 states of America and the 6 states and 2 territories of Australia is an advantage.
We are aware that with America's substantially larger population it makes perfect sense for it to have more states than Australia and that, of course, the states of both countries evolved into their current formats by way of historical events. The purpose of combining the two countries in the one video is to be a little bit funny and possibly to make Australian students aware how much easier this section of their geographical education is than their American counterparts. And, as Australians oursleves we are amused by our country's lack of imagination in state names -- such as Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory!
We also apologize in advance to residents of Alaska for depicting your state as being so much smaller than it actually is! It is so large (considerably more than double the size of Texas) that if we had drawn it to scale we wouldn't have had room for everything else we needed to show!
In summary, this simple song is aimed to help children memorize the 50 states of America. In elementary schools across the USA it is expected that children will learn the names of the fifty states and be able to position them on a map. As a bonus, some world geography is included with the comparison to Australia - and thus it is also a song for Australian children to learn the states and territories of Australia.
