This’ll be me today! Time for a deep clean and redecorating. I should probably also sew a new bottom liner. My boys are avid seam rippers and decided there needed to be a big donut hole in the center
I wouldn’t recommend safety pins on the top of the cage, because if the rats somehow get one off they could puncture themselves with them. Instead, try zip ties! :)
Today was my big deep clean and redecorate of my rat's double Critter Nation cage, too! I think it is excellent that you filmed the whole decoration process! I don't think a lot of new rat parents and prospective rat parents realize how much time and effort should go into a well laid out and decorated cage.
Oh man, I definitely didn't think it'd take that long when i first got my rats! But I kinda find it fun now, just mixing and matching things and trying to imagine how my girls will navigate the cage. Funny thing is this video only shows the parts when I got the item onto the cage bars right away. I swear I spent 20 minutes trying to get that hanging hut and space pod to both snap onto the top bars!
Shadow The Rat I know yesterday I was trying to get the cage done quickly and it seemed like I couldn't get the hammocks spaced just right then I got the silly clips bent on the ramp and it wouldn't sit right in the little shelf... etc and so on! LOL. In my Double Critter Nation I have the top cage closed off from the bottom cage because I have 3 intact female rats in the top and one intact male rat in the bottom. When I bought my rats I didn't want to leave behind the one rat. I knew he would be more likely to become snake food or never even have the proximity to to other rats that he does have. Pet rats are rare in my area and I don't even have a rat rescue in my area. I have tried to get him a companion. I also tried to find a rat savvy vet to neuter him so he could live with the girls but I haven't had any luck with that either.
As long as I have able rats I don't tend to use ladders. They just take up space and unless I'm using them as bridges, I'll just use lava ledges or wooden chinchilla ledges to help my rats climb up :)
Can I ask why you don't use fleece at all? I'm now strongly considering getting two rats - yes, partly thanks to you!:) - and am currently researching how to use bedding/toys/etc to dress up the cage.
Rinske Verberg one reason why a lot of people use litter instead of fleece is because litter doesn't smell as bad (unless there potty trained). People usually only put fleece in hammocks and baskets for nesting. You also don't have to clean the cage as often with litter, and it's fun for them to burrow in it. Just thought I'd give my opinion, have fun with your ratties!😊
Mostly because fleece is pretty hard to use correctly. Don't get me wrong, some people have great success with it - but that's because they know what absorption products to use, and are willing to wash their fleece every 2-3 days. In my house, I have to hand-wash all my rat's fabric items. So washing fleece that often just isn't possible. You also have the fact that bedding is MUCH better at odor control. Seriously, fleece does absolutely nothing to control odor. Its all up to you to prepare the fleece right so that liquid percolates through it and into the underlayer. And if your underlayer isn't good at odor control, then your rat cage will stink within hours. This is what happened to me the one time I tried using fleece, and because smell is already a sensitive topic in my house (one which I almost had to get rid of rats over in the past!), I'm not planning on taking any chances again. Now do I use fleece at all? Actually yes. Usually I'll hang fleece or felt hammocks into the cage. These just consist of one or two layers of fabric hung up with safety clips. Hammocks made like this are cheap and take almost no time to make, and my frats actually seem to prefer them over commercial hammocks. And since my girls don't usually mark hammocks too much, I only need to wash them once a week at most (actually I usually only need to wash them when I clean the cage!) So depending on your living situation and your personal preference, fleece might work well for you. But in my case, using a good pelleted bedding such as Yesterday's News that both absorbs urine well and controls odor all whole being heavy enough that the rats usually can't kick it up and make a mess is ideal.
Shadow The Rat Thank you! This is pretty much what I thought. And I know myself well enough that I DEFINITELY won't wash fleece enough...:) I'll go with a pellet bedding then. Question: have you heard of rabbit pellets (food) as bedding? That's one option I'm considering. And have you ever tried to litter train your rats?
When using fleece be sure to wash it ,with gentle soap soak first, not always good for the sewer.@ not good to have their feet get wet.like with litter to scoopout clumps not to let them eat, walk in it.
I fully clean it (like this) every 1.5-2 weeks, but spot clean (replace soiled bedding/nesting material, replace food/water, wipe down the cage bars) every 3 days :)
Hi! Would it be a good idea (for my future rats) to put Yesterdays News on the second level and the fleece on the bottom? Just to give them some variety
What? Why would I mind them stepping on the litter, its clean. I don't wash with vinegar because it smells too much, instead I used natures miracle (a pet product) for small animals to clean the cage bottom/bars.
Hello we are new rat owners and we will be picking up a used double critter nation tomorrow. I love how yours sit on the floor how did you get them off of the stand?
The critter nation cages are all modular so when assembling them you can opt to just not assemble the stand (just assemble the 4 base pieces on the ground, then add the top to tie it all together). I now have a triple CN in an L shape and its still directly on the floor - personally I find this makes cleaning and playtime easier (I free-range in a large playpen and attach it to the TCN with velcro so I can just open up the doors and the rats come and go as they please). Here's a tour of my current cage if your curious how this looks when you add more units - one of my favorite things about this cage is easily how easy it is to modify because of how it fits together: ruclips.net/video/C35Vv-s6F6s/видео.html CongRATs on your new cage btw - I got my double used last year as well and I have to say that its really nice to be able to find so many deals on it. I always recommend the CN to new owners and one of the first places I recommend looking to buy it is used off craigslist or facebook because you really can find some incredible deals!
@@ShadowTheRat thank you so much! It's already put together so I'll have to check out how to put it on the floor. They are my 4 year old daughters so I love it being low. Do you have a Facebook page we can add or follow? Your RUclips is how she convinced me to get out rats. She kept telling me how to care for pet rats and train them and what cages and food and bedding they needed from washing your videos! ♡
I use Choco no drip water bottles and oasis water bottles - both work great and I’ve never had one drip or get stuck. Oasis has smaller bottles (4-8 ounces) which is a bit of a downside but they hang via metal holders which is a bit plus (plus they are super easy to depress and great for baby rats just learning to use a water bottle), and choco no drip water bottles are larger (12 ounces) and attach to the outside of the cage for easy refilling and cleaning which is awesome.
Rats like to nest and burrow, so its important for them to have loose bits of fabric or tissues or such to next with. At this time I didn't use a dig box but now I mainly let my rats take crinkled paper from their dig box to fulfill their nesting and digging needs. The other nice thing about tissue paper is that its a completely rat safe way to make a cage theme - you can see my video here when I did a holiday theme a while back with my current cage and used tissue paper and wrapping paper to theme everything, which had the bonus of giving the rats extra enrichment of pulling it off and nesting with it: ruclips.net/video/II35JoIxJ0E/видео.html
What is the bottom pan? Did you replace the original with a cat litter box? If so what size?? All my bedding does is fall out of the cage. Thanks in advance 😊
Its actually a large cement mixing pan :) I cut off 1/2 and inch on each side to fit it inside the CN. Before using this pan I had bedding guards, which frankly sucked and were a waste of money. Before that I had nothing, and because of that my bedding went everywhere! So this was the best option for me. Now if your willing to shell out a bit more for a good pan I recommend bass equipment ferret nation pans (they fit the CN as well). These pans are made of stainless steel and are 3" high. So they work well for keeping in bedding, while not blocking the first shelf holes in the CN. Plus your rats can't chew on them, and issue I faced a while back with my cement pan (that's why you see hardware cloth taped over one side - Cookie started chewing a hole and only taping on some hardware cloth stopped her). They even have these pans for the smaller CN shelves, which is great if your rats tend to dig. You can visit the bass equipment page here: www.bassequipment.com/Store/ShopDetail/FP1-00/FERRET_NATION_PANS And if you decide to get a large cement mixing pan instead, try Lowes or Home Depot. Both carry the pan, although in my case Lowes only has it online while Home Depot actually had it in stock.
