      I don't care about graded games. They do not look as good on a shelf. With that said, many people value these old games and their paper boxes/manuals as we move into the digital age and things continue to change drastically. With that said, these recent price spikes are suspicious.

  • @brandonkick
    @brandonkick 4 года назад +6

    This is insanity.
    Literally just a second or two before Pat said "hundreds" in reference to the amount of sealed Goldeneye games still out there sitting in sealed cases.... I said "hundreds of em". There has to be anywhere between 20 and 30 sealed cases sitting around with however many came in a case of N64 games (6?). Literally the first time someone realizes they have a case of these, that cracks the case and has each game graded... this price will hit the floor. Maybe some of the cases got a little crushed on one side or something... maybe 3 of the 6 don't get good grades... but they have to be dozens of these that if found and graded would be similar examples.
    The SMB3 thing... I mean my god... there has to be thousands of these... hundreds upon hundreds still sitting in sealed master cartons. I can see a little more value in REV 0 where the names of the stages were changed, and other minor things.. but not huge amounts.
    Sealed atari 2600 games... I mean comon.. pac man was so wildly popular, it might have even MORE sealed examples lying around than even SMB3
    These prices are not really justified in terms of the rarity or significance of the item. I could see maybe pristene exmples of like test market sealed NES games going for big bucks... but none of this stuff.
    This is an example of big money coming into the domain, that do not fully understand it. These prices are all anywhere from majorly inflated to just outright nuts.
    FF7 is another example of a game that had the greatest hits designation, meaning it sold a crap top of original copies before it got re released as a greatest hit, and that sold crap tons of copies. There are thousands of those still out there sealed.

    Nothing more than rich people putting a dollar amount on their nostalgia. Some millionaire out there grew up playing Donky Kong on Intellevision. The "insane" part isn't that somebody with a boat load of money bought it. The insane part is the economy is SO unbalanced that there are people in the world who CAN afford to do this while others struggle just to pay their bills.

    • @PatTheNESpunk
      @PatTheNESpunk  4 года назад +1

      It doesn't meet the criteria. The game is ASS common even sealed and that is a terrible version of the game. And it hasn't "kept its value" -- the most valuable copy that was sold on the auction house was the first one. The others all have gone for far less and it will continue to fall as more come on the market.

    I have a Donkey Kong cabinet sitting in my room, unrestored and not working. Probably couldn't get more than a few hundred bucks for it.
    And regardless it's a more important and interesting piece of game history than everything being sold in these auctions.

    I'd say Contra has more cultural impact than you think. Obviously it wasn't the first game to have the Konami Code but I would say it's the most associated game with it. They made a freaking Robot Chicken sketch about it for Christ sake

    These prices are really insane... Like really not realistic. There is no way a sealed GoldenEye should be worth that much. Is it a scam, money laundering? Or is it just rich suckers partaking in this auction scene?

    the Fed printed TRILLIONS of dollars and people
    are spending a lot of money on collectibles:
    most expensive mustang recently sold $3,850,000.00
    most expensive comic sold on eBay $3,207,752.00
    most expensive modern basketball card sold recently at auction $1,845,000.00
    a football card just sold on eBay a few days ago for $1,333,333.00
    some original Air Jordans recently sold for $560,000.00
    a pokemon card sold at auction for $195,000.00
    a magic card sold on eBay for $166,000.00
    most expensive Mario so far ONLY $114K
    as cars, comics, coins, games, shoes, toys, etc.
    are experiencing "alternative asset" inflation as
    fake printed money seeks to hedge the future
    macro that points towards loss of purchasing power
    which means the games look like they are going up
    relative to the adjusted value of money based on fear and greed
    so compared to all other categories,
    sealed video game artwork boxes
    appear to have the most upside :)
    PS it's not "games" it's really ONLY
    FACTORY SEALED 25 to 40 year
    old MINT artwork soft boxes as
    cartridges and manuals
    have yet to spike upwards...

    In reality it’s their loss. Unless it’s considered a valuable relic one day. If you were to take the museum approach, a video game museum wouldn’t let you take carts off a wall and play them it would be display. And a future videogame “library” building would use a digital archive. So would the museum NEED little Sampson? Or would they just make an NES cart shell, slap a sticker on it, and frame it without a game board in it because it won’t be played? The “average teenage bedroom/basement from the 70s/80s/90s/00s/10s etc” at conventions or in a museum would be a more realistic exhibit. And not every kid had watta sealed games 😂

    If these people think they can get a better return on these games than in the stock market or real estate, let them do it. I feel the risk would be much too high, but it's their money.

    This SCREAMS publicity stunt by WATA. Set up auctions to promote and spread WATAs name, make everyone think WATA is the new gold standard, buyer(s) reimbursed and WATA eats an auction fee for the sake of publicity and hype. I dont know exactly how to describe it and its very farfetched lol. WATA is frowned upon in N64 collecting. (Graded games suck to me anyways lol)

    How much for a sealed boxed copy of Superman 64 ???

  • @IanSane
    @IanSane 4 года назад

    It used to be that you bought the retro game because you wanted to play it and you may have wanted the box and manual in decent condition if you could find them as that would display well on a shelf. We didn't care about the print run, aside from ugly "greatest hits" packaging. If you had the box/case, manual and any extra maps or guides that came with it (warranty cards and Nintendo Power ads were not really necessary; though nice to have) and it didn't look like crap then it was great and details beyond that were not on the average collector's radar at all.
    The sad thing about a sealed game being graded is that is one less copy in circulation for someone to have to play. The old appeal of a sealed copy was "hey, this hasn't been opened so it's like I'm buying a new copy and it will be in great condition and not be missing anything."

    The Xbox projector mod doesn't come across as Microsoft's style. Seems a little too niche. That being said, I don't think the $4,800 it pulled down was too crazy. It looked like a very well put together mod. I think Ben Heck could pull that for some of his current gen mods.

    Honestly or all the titles I think FF7 might be the one you undersold the most. FF7 sold around 10 million copies on the PS1. Even excluding the later green label greatest hits release there was millions of OG copies sold and it's far more recent then just about anything else sold here. There has to be thousands of unopened copies sitting in shipping boxes all over the place. 1300 dollars for THE 2ND MOST COMMON PS1 GAME just because it's sealed and graded is fucking bonkers. It's also in an extra thick hard plastic jewel case so the chances of a shipping box being damaged in such a way to reduce the wata grade is even less then an NES era game which came in cardboard.
