      Yes ! Always wondered at what point do things become dated / outdated or considered traditional / classic / vintage / antique , etc. ? Also , just how long does a " trend " last ? I was an interior designer & these issues , while no longer keeping me awake at night , still seem to be open to very diverse opinions ! 😂

      No, you need to rewatch other videos. You’re confusing updating with trend chasing. Updating is for things that won’t be back in style. My neighbor is a design consultant as her husband is a builder. She’s a big believer in making your house YOURS, not what other people think you should have. If you want a fiberglass shower because you hate the expense and cleaning tile, go for it. It’s about being comfortable in your own home and not worrying about keeping up with what you feel like your supposed to have.

    The main thing that dates your house is redoing entire rooms or the entire house all at once. Because like it or not, you’re going to be influenced by trends. If you build it slowly, your paint color might be 2012, but your couch is 2022, and so on. Antiques help too.

    Love your channel: however, could not resist this one. 10 years ago all of the RH stores did "slate gray" on their walls with all white furniture. I fell in love, and painted every wall in my home with their paint. I still have slate gray walls (even though they changed to white) and white furniture, with black accessories. I also changed from brass to polished nichol. I tire of things easily but never tired of this look. Everyone who enters my small modest home asked who my designer is. It's breath taking, so I don't see myself changing any time soon. It's all in how you work with this color that makes it fabulous!!!

    I need to keep this gray for a while,

    I am decorating with beige, creams, browns, and tans. I use a pop of color each season that helps bring my rooms to life.

    One thing that I think really dates a house is light fixtures. As an English decor enthusiast, these “outdated” decor schemes actually can be melded with modern touches for a layered and lovely home. I have even seen the “orange” oak cabinets look absolutely modern and cool with changes in surrounding tile and textiles! I watch Valentina for educational and entertainment purposes…i.e., she is a hoot! (And she really did make accommodations for using carpet as well as suggestions for the other outdated concepts.)

    • @vaderladyl

      Exactly. Classic decor incorporates other wood colors into a very balanced and attractive look. All woods are beautiful and not all has to be blonde or wengue colored wood.

    About these 90s-2000s oak cabinets, you can also dye them into a more neutral tone, so you keep the texture of wood, without the dated color. Change the countertop and hardwares, the color of the walls, light fixtures and you get a new look while still keeping the cabinets. Sure, it won't be top trends, but it will look fresh enough. ^__^

      If you want a change, that is fine but that "dated" look is so subjective. I am tired with these so called designers pushing to make the illusion that other wood colors are dated or are so horrible they cannot exist, when that is not true. Kitchens can be "updated" to look fresh even with their wood color as is.

Design is subjective in the end - you can copy people but in the end you’ll want something that actually feels like you and your family. And these design trends are just that-trends. They change constantly and you will never reach the end of it. Find a hobby that actually matters.
    There are sooooo many more worthwhile things to spend money on or give money to.

    Heavy wood antique furniture is an obsession! And with family heirlooms and Facebook Marketplace, I’ve been able to furnish my home very inexpensively. I love that no one wants it! A mashup of cottagecore, western ranch (turns out antique saddles are cool design accessories and my cats say they’re the best cat chairs - plus photos of cats on saddles are everything!) and dark academia - heck yes please. Did I mention I have ADHD and get bored easily? I never thought about it until just now, but I wonder if that’s why my design style is “all the things all over the place” :-) BUT in my defense these styles have common elements, and with thoughtful color choices, placement and repetitive textures, I think they actually blend beautifully.

I went right to work putting walls back up…recreating woodwork… hunting vintage fixtures and I even found the original built-in buffet and china hutches that had been ripped out. 😊
    My house looks just like it did in 1935 thanks to a photo that a family member gave me. So… yes… my home is dated and I couldn’t be happier!!!

Changed out all the shiny brass hardware to bronze, painted my oak cabinets cream, got rid of ALL carpet (even in the bedrooms)- went with dark wood laminate floors. I chose classic over trendy (gray) and I think my choices will look amazing for years to come. Did warm gray paint in bedrooms and baths but I actually like it in those rooms and it’s just paint and will be easy to change when I’m over it. Solid advice and I love that you acknowledge that you should do what you love-then it doesn’t really matter if it’s “dated”- if you love it, you love it and that’s what’s most important!

    Just did my house in agreeable grey last year, I love it. It's a great neutral. Goes with everything. I am a blue person and it works, with my dark floors and quartzite and antique and pottery barn furniture with black accents.. I live on the lake and have beautiful oil paintings with gold gilt frames and they pop on the wall color. California landscapes and sail boat paintings. White cabinets and blue island, color called imalfi.😊

    • @toosense
      @toosense 11 месяцев назад

      Agreeable gray is a nice neutral with a warm undertone, can look beige in certain lighting. My house is Analytical Gray which has a warm green undertone, not really gray at all due to my house not getting much sunlight. I have old world landscape oil paintings as well. I think the grays that are a bit outdated are cooler toned.

    Well, I think the trend now is mixing vintage pieces, be it cherry or something else with a few newer pieces; the effect being more relaxed and cozy and less sterile as too much modern furniture will do to a house. Cherry wood cabinets can be very beautiful and timeless, with maybe updating the countertops and handles. And please, could people start buying couches in something else than white? How about taupe or even darker?

    11:35…those are my cabinets EXACTLY! Oh, they are the worst. So dated! I painted mine as a little refresh until we can do a full renovation. Keep in mind you can do little changes at a time. Change out one light fixture here and there until one day they’re all fresh and new. Same with knobs, faucets, paint. I’ve been doing my entire home over time. It makes the project seem doable and affordable.

    Don’t you think matte black could be too modern in a traditional home? I like polished nickel because it’s warmer than chrome. So it’s more neutral, in my opinion. Obviously Unlaqured brass is always beautiful.

  • @lorraine1443

    I have my two cents opinion to add here :-) White looks good in "interesting" rooms (with some architectural interest), but in a box house----the lower-end homes, it can look very "contractor thoughtless" And beige HAS to be the right beige to match the flooring!! I have a pink undertone in my kitchen tiles (that will be GONE soon) and yellow-toned "wood" IKEA cabinet faces (that will also be gone soon). They clash and it looks worse than dated. I believe this is the struggle some people have---seeing the undertones in materials/colors. Sometimes "strong" colors can really give life to a room that is otherwise a BOX and detract from other features that one doesn't have the $$$ to replace---yet. For example, at least in Pinterest photos, an all "almost black" room (ceilings and all) can look good in rooms that are featureless. It makes the household's furniture etc stand out---like an art gallery. White and beige are "safe" but can (much of the time) look quite boring if not done right (in the contractor homes). What do you think?

    • @MizJilly
      @MizJilly 11 месяцев назад +2

      I agree with you 100 percent. Stark whites seem to work best as the backdrop to either good furniture, good architecture, or interesting colors in the room (including black and white like Valentina's home). My kitchen is white (BM Chantilly Lace), because I have green upper cabinets and black lowers, and I wanted the cabinets to pop. Generally, though, I think softer tones are more decor friendly. Dove Wing is one safe bet and has become my favorite no-brainer paint.

    Totally agree with u on the carpet, it’s nasty and hard to keep clean..However some young people are seeking to buy homes of a time period that have as much original quality as possible. My son who is 30 is crazy about the American Victorian period , he seeks out and purchases that furniture and all things Victorian ( American). His paint colors , dishes etc. He has a very good female friend he went to high school with , who purposely sought out a home built in the sixties that still had all original tile and plumbing fixtures etc. She bought it has not changed anything and filled it full of original mid century furniture, decor and kitchenware as she could find.. Both homes are a site to see , both of these intentionally procured by people only 30 years old..
