      @MXBADBOY I completely agree with you! As someone else has said, those were magical times then! I go back in time as well.

      I was 10yr old in 75 . Left some foot tracks growing up in the 70's and the 80's .... I love the 70's , But I consider myself of 80's pedigree . Those 10 yrs from 75 to 85 was a great decade in MX history . Glad I was there to enjoy it 👌

    Good photos, thank you for posting. I was there as well. I shot several rolls of Kodachrome 200. Me and a buddy went to the local outdoor shopping mall the day before where all the teams set-up their bikes for public viewing. Got some pics of that too, I'm now trying to locate my slides. I had no idea what a special time that would be until years, years later. I saw all my heroes up close, even helped Broc Glover upright his bike when he went down in a turn. I miss those days so much it practically hurts. The true Golden Age of motorcross.
    The new generation just doesn't understand.

    started racing in 1977 in Minnesota. went to the 1977 Trans AMA race at Red Bud w/ my wonderful lifelong friends of Scott Taylor and Brad Konsor for our 1st ever PRO motocross race!! BUT IN 1978 me and Scott loaded up his Bronco and set out for a 2 week roadtrip , 1st to Cycle World in St Pete , Mo and then to Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch near Whitney, Tx. And Ijust want to say thanks for posting such a treasure of photos from those tracks. if you wish to see more photos of these tracks,, go to my facebook page to check out other great pics from TX, and ST PETE, MO. 16 years old and roadtripping across America to watch Bob Hannah spank Roger and a host of other Euros. Rich Eierstedt Can Am # 20 in these photos, lived right across the street from me in Tustin California. I was a 13 year old BMX racer and aspiring MX racer. I met Marty Tripes, Jimmy Weinert, Gaylon Mosier, Gary Semics and quite a few other stars of the 70's because of Rich.They were all really nice to me and just totally cool to hang out with. Marty Tripes gave me an autographed Team Honda sticker one afternoon. Rich was so cool to me and took me to Saddleback to practice after school AND I GOT IN FREE! Thanks for the great memories.

      After spectating this race and 2 Nationals in 81 and 82 it took me almost 10 yrs to return to Whitney every spring during the 90s and early 2000s to race there. I would go back to Minnesota and kick ass for the 1st couple months of our season!! I too miss Lake Whitney, if I could go back for just one day!

    Great pictures...I was there! I watched The Hurricane ride up the hill climb on a yz 100, with Mike Bell on the back...unreal! I was 12 and had just moved up from a DT 100 to 1978 YZ 125. Thank you for the precious memories. I believe a few of locals were experimenting running methanol that weekend...might have Rhoten, Rakestraw or Anderson...but for some reason I remember Kirk Dillon talking about it.

    I was there with Lee Allen Potts and Mike Lagaza. The night before Bob Hannah did the hill climb it wasn't an event he just did it then did it w/mechanic on the back of the bike then did it again only this time with one foot on the seat and one foot in the air. ..That Bob! Also, the pit bike grand Prix was the biggest I had ever seen even team Suzuki had a painted yellow Xr 75.

    Hey David, do you know of any film or photos (other than those in mags) of the 1978 Four stroke Nationals at Carlsbad? Tony Wynn rode my dads CCM and did really well. Trying to find photos, film or even the full final results for all the motos. Thanks man.

    • @dekebike
      @dekebike  7 лет назад +1

      I don't have any footage or photos of that event. There were some interesting 4 stroke creations (like the CCM) in the 1970s. You might try Cycle News Archives from the 1970's for the results. Sorry!

    • @DowntownDogMan
      @DowntownDogMan 7 лет назад +1

      No problem man. Tony made MX Action and Popular cycling for that one, Im pretty sure he was either 6th or 3rd in first moto but wasn't used to the CCM with the Simons forks they installed and went off the course. Had enough power to win, according to Tony. My Dad used to talk about that Knobby Shop CCM/Honda with the mono shock rear end and almost a foot of travel.

    I remember this race, I raced Friday night at the Rio Bravo night track and broke a bone in my left hand, but we packed up and drove to Whitney and made the weight in, in town on Saturday and then went to the track. I was in a lot of pain but I had several friends racing and wanted to watch. Got home late Sunday night and had a cast put on my hand on Monday morning.
