That awesome moment when you're watching a video about srh440's while wearing a pair of srh440's...I'm a producer/DJ, and I love these things...SERIOUSLY underrated pair of headphones...
I'm a music producer and got these for birthday present and I'm so happy. They are legit perfect. they got good isolation and flat sound(No EQ) and the quality is amazing. I highly recommend them for anyone thinking about buying studio headphones
They are most definitely not suited to the studio. They easily sound so good because they're more hifi than analytically critical, and so tend to big-up the sound, which causes poor vocal performance when used as monitors, and are so loose that they're far too unstable on a drummer's head. Furthermore, the cables on the right side of the one I had broke because they kept getting caught in the hinge. An appalling design. I tried plenty of mixing on these when they were working, but when I switched to my excellent Yamaha MSP5 monitors + Adam sub-bass the mix was always a total disaster.
these are awesome, owned for a couple years, I did do a couple mods recomended by a Shure engineer this results in the most balanced output and I also found it helped with comfort. Switch the earpads with the SRH840 pads (they can be ordered from shure) I also re-cabled it and got a nice DAC
I've had these for a few years now, and I thought about upgrading, but I realized there's really nothing to upgrade to. The best part about these it that they have a relatively neutral frequency bias in comparison to many headphones nowadays. I've tried all my friends headphones and some in stores, but they all lack the clarity and "trueness" that these possess. I haven't found anything that sounds better than these. They do get uncomfortable after a while though.
This was my first video I ever watched from unbox therapy. I bought these headphones because of this review....and I don't regret a thing. They have been my professional use headphones for a long time now and when mine break I will definitely be buying another pair
Have you not found enough reviews already? I bought mine last Christmas for $106.... And I would've paid full price if they hadn't been on sale. Absolutely worth it. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
I bought this headphone 6 months ago and it is just amazing. I repeated all the songs and movies which I usually listen and watch and it seemed I am listening and watching them again. Listened to new sounds that I missed when listening to cheaper headphones.
@Lyran Starseeds Revival no issues at all. Works like a champ. I have now bought a flagship phone MI 10T which has an inbuilt DAC and amplifier of high quality. The headphone works even better. It has neutral sound. You listen to bass where you must.
Omg, these headphones are soooo pro!!! I've bought these 2 days ago and they are just WOW!!! Sounds sooo high quality and flat, just love it! I listen to Hardstyle, Dubstep and Hip-hop and it's sounds sooo high quality, the bass is perfect for me, and on higher volumes it's not going to sound bad. Just buy these, you won't regret!!!
wow great camera angles and finally someone who actually looks at left and right my friend didnt like apples new headphones because he wasn't bright enough to look at left and right
These hooked up to astro mixamp is absolutely magnificent sound. Its sound is so clean lean and mean. The m50x compared to shure sound much to bass heavy, layering over the mid and highs producing a very unsatisfying sound. Shure has a lighted clamping force making them more comfortable to wear longer. In short the shure for me out shines the m50x in all aspects. A great headphone for movies, games and music. 4/4
LOVE my Sony MDR-V6's, from what I'm told they're the Sony equivalent to the ATH-M50's, and for anyone who asks, yes, they will blow the XB500's out of the water, I owned those awhile back too :) much better build quality as well!
PEOPLE NEW TO SHURE HEADPHONES READ PLEASE: The materials used by Shure on these headphones is subpar, they will break at the hinge in a year or less. Some people have suggested that head size might be a factor, i have a relatively big head so make of that what you will. People with smaller heads seem to have no problem with them though.
i bought this headphones used they have plastic sound when moving head or jaw i love sound but not build quality im already trying to sell it after 1 month of having it im so scared of braking it i dont even use it anymore i just have it in box
@@Musounds412 considering you appear to be a small dog, that doesn't surprise me 😁 In any case I blame my big head and Shure's design, got a pair of beyerdynamics and those things are built to last, simple design, sturdy af and 3 years on they are still going strong. Will never buy shure headphones again, the mic collection keeps growing though 😂
Yes they are bass-heavy. Google their frequency response and find a graph. Also, while uncomfortable is subjective, a ton of people complain about comfort issues. There is a popular mod soley for comfort.
I have the SRH840's and you can hear very fine details with them. I can even hear echo occasionally from the room he recorded himself talking in during the middle section of the video
I'm using the SRH240A's and I can hear the echo too, very clearly. And not ocassionally, the whole time in that section, using an audio interface. If I put the headphones directly in the computer I could hear it only ocassionally. The interface gives you a better sound. So it's kind of interesting that the 240's did a similiar job than the 840's or even better, taking into account the using of the "ocassionally" term you used.
For about $100, you can get yourself a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50's. I LOVE these headphones! They are the top rated headphones on Amazon as well. Now these are total studio headphones, so they have a long cord, great sound isolation (may squeeze a little if you are sensitive but its fine for me) and of course the most AMAZING quality you can get for the price. Also, if you want the best possible quality, get yourself an amplifier of some sort. (Fiio E11) That may cost a little extra though.
I'll be listing the iPhone 5 on eBay tomorrow. Going back to a 3G while I wait for the Note 3 to be released. Thanks for the video! I've been thinking about this the last few weeks.
I have these headphones, so I can tell you what they're like, but I don't know much about the M50's. First of all, the pads these headphones come with are pretty bad. The meash covering the speaker is way too thin, so if your ears stick out a little like mine they will be grating against the holes in the plastic. The good news, is that I bought replacement pads for them, now it's much better. Bass is a bit stronger with them as well. Definitely good headphones if you get the replacement pads.
Been over a year of use and I still use them daily. The only problem for me: 1- I had HD598 for a month and it's no contest, Sennheiser is better. 2- I have big hears and can't keep theses Shures over my hear over an hour or so (not confortable for me), which is disapointing. I still recommend for the price, they sure deliver (I listen from Casualties Of Cool to Slayer to Animals As Leaders), but again, nothing compared to HD598.
The Sennheiser HD598 at close to $200 are almost twice the price of the Shure SRH440. The Sennheiser HD280 Pro at $99 are more comparable to the SRH440s sound wise, but they don't have some of the niceties like detectable cables found on the Shure SRH440s.
Markus Arike Ikr, I have them both. The thing is that Shure calls them professionnal studio and I can't wear them for longer than an hour (even for a 100$ pair of headphone or HD280). This is what it is all about. Again, I use daily my Shure in the subway and bus, but when I get home I switch to HD598. The 100$ more worth it more than I could ever imagine.
xboxnissan For sure, if you go to the $200 range, there are some great sounding and comfortable cans available like the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro, which are soft like butter and built like tanks. But Shure, like Sennheiser, makes some more high end cans like the SRH940 and SRH1840. At this level they are all great. But for $229, the Beyerdynamic 770s are my all time favorite for comfort and tank-like German build quality.
xboxnissan Yes, I know Sennheiser is German, but their headphones under $200 often use more plastic than I'd like to see. Don't know about the HD598s, but the Beyerdynamic DT 770s are built like tanks. I was thinking of trying the HD280 Pros but some of the reviewers mention build quality issues using words like "creaky plastic headband". I just got a pair of Audio Technica M30 for $50 on Amazon and I gotta say, they're great for the price. If you're willing to pay more tho, the M50 Professional is the best bang for your buck, around 150ish

owned a good quality flat headphone these for a year and a half, these are a good quality flat headphone audiophiles are starting finally realize their woth.
I would suggest the sennheiser HD 400 series, I have there 419's but if you want to spend a little more just go up the line, i.e. 429, 439, or 449's sennheiser makes really good quality stuff, cant go wrong for the price!
Anyone looking to get the ATHM 50's I have owned them and they are a great pair of headphones the only draw back for me was the lack of a mic. Also don't get the S (straight cord) if you aren't prepared for a LONG cable!
As an audio engineer, I don't see why people are so keen on getting studio headphones. These type of headphones (if they are any good), will have a reasonably flat frequency response because professionals need an accurate vision of their creations.
Hey Lew, how do these stack up to the XB500s? Do you think they'll replace them for you, because if sure seems you like them. Also, a top 5 headphones video would be cool!
Seriously, check out the Soundmagic HP100 if you want great audio for less than $200. There are literally no bad reviews and most reviews give a 9/10. A great place for advice on headphones is HeadFi.com but search before posting a question because chances are its been asked. I have the V Moda M80 which get great reviews also and the Soundmagics simply destroy them for sound. For looks and sound try V Moda M100.
I find them very comfortable, not as good as DT 770s but as good as M50s. Haven't tried the Custom One Pro but I would image it to be similar to the DT range.
Check the JVC HA-S600's... they were even compared to the beats by dre's headphones in terms of audio quality. (see youtube reviews) They retail for around 30-50$. I own them and although they aren't the most attractive headphones to wear around, the sound is awesome. Check them out!
Sweety, you obviously don't know how to comprehend text if you can't understand that I never said what price the Orpheus was. and the Stax is NOT better.
I have these headphones, sound quality's really good, they represent the sound pretty flat, Only complaint is they do get warm and uncomfortable after wearing em for say more than 2 hours.
Saw this video 4-5 years ago, bought it and it broke within 6 months. Never liked it in terms of construction, felt very plasticky, rigid, and vulnerable to break. Don't even remember how they sounded, given that I had a bad experience with comfort, fit, and feel. Didn't have a decent return policy in my country at the time.
All music enthusiasts need pro headphones. If you want your favourite music sound just like when it was recorded, you need best flat response and all soundstage you can get. A true hi-fi experience. Otherwise you get headphone manufacturer's representation of the song. And that I don't consider as high fidelity.

By the way the earbuds from your back to school video are asymmetrical (one cord is longer longer than the other). Just an FYI
440's are great, but they're a little harsh on the mids. The 840's are my pick
Are these good for gaming?
You do if you need flat sounding pro cans for monitoring a mix. Otherwise, I would go elsewhere for sheer music listening/fun headphones.

- Shure.
the xb500s are pretty much opposite of the shures. they're a bass centred headphone that has an excellent bass response and low end detail, but the shures have a much balanced/flatter signature.

I have the V Moda M80 which get great reviews also and the Soundmagics simply destroy them for sound. For looks and sound try V Moda M100.
nope, I've tried a few Sony headphones, some Sennheiser ones and a few others but I prefer Turtle Beaches overall
I find them very comfortable, not as good as DT 770s but as good as M50s. Haven't tried the Custom One Pro but I would image it to be similar to the DT range.
Who is watching this is 2018?
ordred these couple days ago... hope they stand up
me...2019
my daily driver (headphone) sony mdr xb 700...
use m dayly with phone, laptop and back when my ipod nano 6g wasnt broken with that as well.
every time someone says beats are the best headphones ever, an orphan dies and a unicorn commits suicide.
Do they sound better than M50x's ?
Check the JVC HA-S600's... they were even compared to the beats by dre's headphones in terms of audio quality. (see youtube reviews) They retail for around 30-50$. I own them and although they aren't the most attractive headphones to wear around, the sound is awesome. Check them out!
Get them, their very good and accurate.
I just upgraded from the original beats by dre studios to the 2013 remastered editions
Are these better than the m-50s?
Sweety, you obviously don't know how to comprehend text if you can't understand that I never said what price the Orpheus was. and the Stax is NOT better.
Wait what?! He actually did reviews once upon a time?!
I'm using those at the moment and they are damn amazing.
Watching in August 2019
I have these headphones, sound quality's really good, they represent the sound pretty flat, Only complaint is they do get warm and uncomfortable after wearing em for say more than 2 hours.
Great video as always!
Are they tough? i need to use them on the go, you know, here and there.
If you want REALLY tough, check out V-MODA's headphones.
Not really, they have tighter bass and more forward mids, a little more critical but more accurate to the song than M50s
Still better than the MDR XB500?
This looks like a sweet headphones
Saw this video 4-5 years ago, bought it and it broke within 6 months. Never liked it in terms of construction, felt very plasticky, rigid, and vulnerable to break. Don't even remember how they sounded, given that I had a bad experience with comfort, fit, and feel. Didn't have a decent return policy in my country at the time.
No one NEEDS pro headphones. It's all about WANTING them.
so true but having them does make u feel good n maybe it looks good tooo with better built n sound....!!!! ....
All music enthusiasts need pro headphones. If you want your favourite music sound just like when it was recorded, you need best flat response and all soundstage you can get. A true hi-fi experience. Otherwise you get headphone manufacturer's representation of the song. And that I don't consider as high fidelity.
said by seomeon who has clearly never had pro headphones, theres a difference. and this price is p competitive
Rajat Ukey But I need them all
