Optimism is good, but countries in ASEAN have long fallen into the manufacturing trap, just look at Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, even though their manufacturing is high, they don't master technology at all, it's all just empty talk.
We in Indonesia have different rules for seeking investment, it is proven that we can master this technology.
We deliberately took the main part of the technology, because that is the manufacturing base.
Maybe there are still many people who misinterpret GDP.
We deliberately develop military-based technology, because it makes research easier & will be cheaper if sold, this is done by China, America, India & Europe.
HR is just the reason for an entrepreneur,
Malaysia uses Bangladeshi workers to get cheap wages, China forces its workers to work 3 times as long, causing high unemployment rates. Vietnam, Thailand & Philippines, you see for yourself.
Singapore just a financial accomplice of foreign capitalists. 😂😂😂

This comparison may seem misleading as ASEAN does not aspire to become the EU in the future. While there may be some shared objectives, the challenges faced by ASEAN are distinct and unique. ASEAN is on its journey to chart its own course and shape its distinct identity.

They hammered down mandate that hurt their oppositional member states like a tyrant. Our ASEAN's non interference is not the problem. It's a blessing. ASEAN was founded by 5 countries IN, PH, SG, MY, and TH but since day one the idea is to make ASEAN with 10 members. Not so long after ASEAN remaining 5 countries joined ASEAN. Its unity did not come from interest of each country rather solidarity and understanding among each other condition. ASEAN + is a framework bring common interests within ASEAN countries when dealing with great powerhouse such as US, China, Japan, EU countries, etc. Just matter of time till ASEAN can a model for the world how to become united in more fragmented society.

ASEAN has not been able to make significal surpass EU. In reality, the role and cohesion of the ASEAN have diminished compared to a decade ago. ASEAN currently seems to be more of a symbolic or ceremonial collaboration, with each member state primarily pursuing its own interests and avoiding involvement in the internal issues of other countries to prevent external interference in their own affairs. For instance, the situation in Myanmar remains largely unaddressed.
Moreover, still has a lack of cultural appreciation among the people of ASEAN, but rather a tendency to be self-reliant and perhaps a sense that their respective national cultures are superior.

I do not think so, ASEAN growth and the media get excited. GDP growth mainly trades with China which increases the agriculture and cheap products, but it is a wrong way to measure the real growth. ASEAN has a long way to go no compared with the EU. Millions of ASEAN remain poor in revenue, education, industry, infrastructure health care, etc.
All these things, the EU has it, and it takes a long time to accomplish. Corruption and class struggle are the main problems and more. However, the people perhaps, the happiest in all nations.

The big problem of Europe, is the fact most of them are ex enemies and rivals from a long history of wars, and they don't really know how to cooperate correctly with each others. They're often stabbing the back of each other, and of course European from the other side of the Atlantic ocean (murica), is managing and working hard to keep it this way.
If the European countries knew how to cooperate and unite to each other, for sure the E.U would be in front of the U.S
If ASEAN countries could figure out how to work together correctly and fairly, yeah there would be a huge potential in my point of view.

also the people factor (politic) would be manipulated to create mistrust to undermine ASEAN solidarity, some big country will try to exploit the weak links in the bloc for their own benefits and influence exsertion.

No, I don't think ASEAN will ever match the EU's level of integration, and thus geopolitical influence. As a bloc, they may surpass the EU economy-wise, but they will not act in a coordinated/cohesive manner.
I live in one of these countries, and I can tell you that they have a very strong sense of national identity without an 'ASEAN' identity, and all of them firmly believe that 'good fences make good neighbors'. They don't despise each other, but they certainly believe in the distinctness and uniqueness of their own culture, and like all nations, ultimately seek to advance the interests of their own people.

Please take down this abomination embarrassment. I'm happy and proud as a southeast Asian. But no way in a million years we're even catching up, let alone surpassing, the Europeans. First we leave out Singapore as they're far superior to us. And we can also exclude Malaysia here as they're offcially joining the high-income (GDP per capita) nations club now. The rest of us? Well we have potential. But at best we'll hit a boom or two and then just stall and stuck in the infamous middle-income trap. It's very hard to escape such trap even with a decent stability and healthy economy. But most of us are facing so, so many problems. I'm from Thailand and we've just got the 1st elected civilian government after full 9 years of military regime. We have been so angry and disappointed with how backward and uncivilized our country have been for these past years. (sorry brother Myanmar we can't help you we have our own shits going on too) Now saying all this made me depressed again.
Well at least we have each other eh? Plus we seem to have similarly beautiful countries. I'd travel a lot in this region if I weren't so god damn poor.
