Can this chair be wheeled up ramps into a hatchback vehicle? Trying to plan ahead so that a capable elder who drives can deal with it herself, but without dead-lifting it into her car.

They are able to be driven up ramps but for some people, its difficult to use the joystick while not being in the chair. We also have a small lift that weighs 25lbs that can be used to get units like this into vehicles. I'm leaving a link to the lift I'm speaking about below. Take a look.

Would knee pads help?

If you need them, yes they would help. They would have to be a custom made product for this unit since there are no mounts for a lateral pads or knee pads like there is on a Permobil or a Quantum chair.
