Although Oliver may be sadly gone, he will never be forgotten by so many of us who perhaps didn't quite understand completely at the time, but fell for the lyrical, liquid, lucid narration and delightful drawings of this master storyteller... I sincerely wish the creators of today's children's TV would take note, and recognize that something wonderful can grow from a beautifully told story, a child's quest for answers & imagining What IF... RIP

The introductory lines of this episode are truly breathtaking. Taking what is a very simple story and the simple language suitable for very small children, and giving it a majesty little short of the introduction to a Shakespeare play. The animation and the story may be simple but they do what all the greatest works do: they harness the power of the imagination

Boy does this bring back memories - how haunting the opening music is and what a wonderful voice. I'd forgotten how good the writing was, what a lovely and evocative atmosphere it created. Still looks good after all these years. Mister Postgate is probably telling stories in heaven.

Oliver Postgate's voice.....just makes me want to curl up on the sofa, with Mr Bear and a cup of hot milk, Mum's voice drifting through from the kitchen....rain pattering on the window, warm and safe, not a care in the world, about five years old. Why do we have to grow up.

  • @ROCKINGMAN

How quaint. How TV was then. I remember this and Ivor the engine, bliss, the narrator Oliver Postgate was the voice for many a child growing up who were transfixed to the TV and absorbing beautiful animations like this. Brian Cant was also a lovely narrator/presenter and Alan Rothwell too as well as many others.

These short, black and white amimations weren't at all sophisticated by today's standards, but I've shown one or two of them to my five year old grand-daughter who sat, spellbound through it all. Gentle, intelligent storytelling at its finest will always enrapture young ones even if it doesn't have all the colours and music of today's kiddy TV. Thank you for posting this and thanks to Oliver Postgate whose legacy and impact on us shouldn't be underestimated.

One time, long time ago, did I venture to the lands of the north where the black rocks stand guard against the dark sea . And there did I meet warriors from all the lands of naytoe. And those warriors would test us in drinking, gambling and fighting contests and lo, they would fail. They would fail in tests of skiing ,navex, load carry and any test. For we were the warriors of thuree cadoe badee and it was good , as we sat round the huge log fires and invoked our tradition of getting shyters.
When Odin calls me to my rest in the halls of Valhalla , I will remember that time .
And lo, do I wish it was tomorrow, instead of yesterday.
And when Ragnorock comes, ready I will stand, sword in hand. 7.62 self loading rifle, actually.

There was so much in this series that was accurate to real or mythological history. (K'nut - we older folks know him better as Canute - was indeed a real Norse king.) So why spoil the effect with cocoa and biscuits?! I never understood that as a kid and I refuse to understand it as artistic license today. There is only one solution! Someone must write a prequel where Lief Erikkson time-travels and provides K'nut with a large supply of chocolate.
