Off grid Island in Alaska, How we brought our Jeep and a 2500 gal water tank to our remote cabin
HTML-код

- Living on an off grid island in Alaska comes with a lot of challenges. Hiring a landing craft to bring over large items like our Jeep and a 2500 gallon water tank is one of the ways we get things done here. This was our son's old Jeep and we thought we could get more value out of it here on the island rather than selling it in town. It's always nice to have a back up vehicle, incase our ATV breaks down. We want to expand our garden next year and this year we noticed that we go through a lot more water than we originally expected. Brining this 2500 gallon water tank over should solve that problem for us next year.

Good to see your neighbors and to see how you all help each other
That’s what I love about our community, everyone is willing to help each other out.
No matter how hard you all are working, you have lots of laughter and make it fun🤣
Laughter is what gets us through the day.
Nothing like friends that stand and laugh as you push an enormous water tank up hill!
Good times!! Thanks for posting...
Ha they helped when it was needed the most.😂
Great group of neighbours you have. I know the feeling, small rural living is the best.
It really is.
The Jeep looked like a toy on the huge boat. Amazing
Ha it did. I wish I new the specs of that landing craft. It’s a good size.
Rolling the water tank is intimidating! The visual gives one the impression that "It will Skwish you!" The reality is it isn't that hard to roll, but don't let it get momentum against you!!!Woe be to he that does!!!!
Ha I’m sure having rolled on top of you wouldn’t feel good but I’d say you’d live to tell about it😂
Wonderfull to see newborns helping each other.😃😃
It fit.. Have a fantastic week you two..!!
It sure did. You have a great week too Ron.
I'm looking at houses in Kenai, I'm old so I need to be close to a dr. Just in case. I knew things were harder in Alaska but thank god for good neighbors! Much love from So.Cal.💖
Good luck on finding a place in Kenai. Beautiful area.
Now that looks like fun!
Great friends, great video once again, you are becoming more and more self sufficient all the time, well-done guys
Thank you Wendy. Having a landing craft come to the island gets everyone’s attention. We had a nice turn out.
Your little island sure is growing and getting populated with some great friends.
They all come out in the summer and it’s great having them around.
Thanks for sharing - you inspire my Alaskan dream ! Soon !
Thanks Richard.
All I can say is sweeet lol, that Jeep is gonna be useful over there for sure, digging the water tank too!! Y'all have a good week up there and stay safe!! Dan
Thanks Dan I sure hope so. We appreciate the support.
this is so cool!
What an exciting day on the iceland, thanks for this funny video!
Thanks Liv. It wasn’t dull that’s for sure.
Whow, that went well, although with some issues to overcome. As usual hahaha. Great to see all the help that’s given. What a great community you have there! That tank is ENORMOUS!
Everyone here is always willing to lend a helping hand. I’m in the planning stage of getting that tank hooked up in the near future.
Water storage is always a good thing.👊
True. We found out that we used a lot more water in the garden than we thought.
Hey guys, it starting to look like you have all the creature comforts out there. I know your trying to grow your RUclips business. I would watch all your videos Brian. Is it just too much work to do more than one per week? You guys always have great content. I think you have the greatest life. Jealousy wee bit.
Yeah I’ve thought about doing more than one a week. I don’t want to bore people and I don’t want to get burned out at the same time. Thanks for the input though, I appreciate it.
That guy pushing the water tank reminds me of Sisyphus and his boulder!
😂
Hey folks great job. Adler farms sent me over. ❤💫✌
That’s awesome😂
Love that first thing first the dogs have to get on and check it out, same here if there is trouble they are the first to find it.
Ha that’s the truth.Raven is still a little skeptical about things. When the dogs start baring she runs back to us. 😂
Nice life guys
You have the best life. Hands down.
I’m enjoying it, that’s for sure.
A great adventure, these folks are making a wonderful homestead in a beautiful part of the world ,LIKE SUBSCRIBE AND COMMENT, TO KEEP THIS AWESOME PROGRAM COMING.Thankyou Brian and Diana for sharing your thoughts and experiences.Awesomeness!
Thank you Robert. Hoped you liked it. A landing craft always draws a big crowd on the island.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead Be safe kids ,looking forward to the new adventures

Thank you. Have a great week👍
I just subscribed!! I came over from Adler farm. I love Alaska and although I've never been able to visit,I'm excited to watch your adventures.
Thank you. That was so kind of them to share our video. Maybe one day you can take a vacation up here. It’s a beautiful place.
Great teamwork getting that water tank up to the house!! That's the same size I'll be using in Alaska! But what the heck are you going to do with a Jeep on an island??? lol!!
Well used ATVs are going for $2500 and up here. I could have sold the Jeep for $1500 max. It still runs good but has some leaking issues. I decided to just bring it over as a backup. Plus we can use it to pull the boat out of the water instead of the tractor.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead Cool deal Brian!! sounds like a good plan!
I would have dinner or lunch in it like date night! Get a couple of those old school A&W window trays
Sucks he got caught up in the line. Otherwise it was a perfect unloading. Great job getting the tank home! Cheers B & DD!
Yeah everything was going good until he started to leave. Then it went south real quick. Hope you have a great week.
Craig is a tone of laughs lol
😂
Adler sent me over. I subscribed. Best wishes
Thank you Linda, glad to have you.
The lead-in music and pictures at the start of your videos now are excellent....I'm now subscribed. I am a partially disabled man in Nebraska that gets to watch your lives in Alaska, so you better have some good acting Mr. Army. ;)
Ha why thank you. I’ll try not to disappoint😂
Hope you have a great day.
That 2 day delivery from Amazon is amazing😆
😂yes it is
Another TJ? Hell yes!
Yeah buddy. It’s Phoenix’ old Jeep.
Well now that was an adventure! Where is the gas powered pole saw when you need it. Awesome jeep ya got. Water tank survived ! Stay safe my friends.
It wasn’t a dull day to say the least. Everything was going great until the two boats got tangled up. Made an exciting video though.😂 No boats were harmed making this video. “My disclaimer “😂
Hope you are feeling ok. We are keeping you in our prayers.
Yeah I had some remarks on the boat mess but thought it was better to just shut up. Like ya said it could have been a lot worse.
@@CBsGreenhouseandGarden ha I hear ya
Mission accomplished! Hopefully the boat was damaged by that ramming. How cool is that, a jeep on the island. That water tank is a beast. We are buying a bigger one soon and it was good to see the 2500 gallon tank to get a better idea of the size. Great community you guys have there. 😁👍
Ha you may have seen the picture of it in the back of my pickup. It was bigger than I thought 😂 We should have any water issues after this gets buried in the ground.
Find the Motor Trend Dirt Everyday video for how to drive it off the island lol. You'll know when you found the right episode.
I Love your videos Bro

Just heard about you guys from Adler farms ...great video
Glad to have you here. What a great guy he is for sharing our video.
As a VET- I always would clean the street bevore transporting the cons.
Also a better way: direct on the beach/waterline is the beach not so aslant- its simple to lift the con on the Anhänger. As schräger the beach as harder it ist to heben das Ding an!
The little landing craft....
I hope you reported the boat collision to the Coast Guard so the government can properly conduct a thorough investigation😄
😂 that’s a negative
Very interesting.. Alaskan drem..not American dream..life free and no competition with others
That’s a good point.
Great! just be careful to protect the tank from the pressure the dirt will put on its walls! Al of Lumnah acres had his share of trouble when getting off grid water tank installed.
Thanks for the heads up. We only want to burry it down about four feet. That will keep the pipes from freezing.
Wow, guess people don't realize how difficult and expensive bringing big items over to the island and taking to the house. Man when he hit that boat, bang. Great friends to help out. Nice Jeep. By the way, how's the garden doing? 😊🇱🇷
That’s why it’s nice to share the cost of the landing craft with others who may need something brought over. Yeah them two boats smacked pretty good.
Garden is good. We’ll have to do an update.
I have never, ever, seen anyone strong enough to MOVE 2,500 gallons of water like that!
Trees must be easy? That’s better Brian....LOL!
Something got lost in text? 🤷♂️
No shortage of water now - time to build the jacuzzi!
No that’s for sure. Gardening takes a lot of water. Especially when someone near by is doing the Sundance 🌞 😂 I think we will be set now.

Is the landing craft a Svendsen boat??? Next, water tanks, I have a couple of 5000 gallon tanks, and on their side I could roll them,(Walter Mitty Superman) They have been a good value, and are not all that difficult to handle and or move. Next: My compliments as to the on the water filming, the glassy water footage is some of the prettiest I have seen in my life.
Thanks Jay. The small landing craft we were fishing on is a Munson.
just a note. all videos of this season are showing up at the top of your "all videos from the beginning" playlist, when they should (according to all the other seasons) go at the bottom :). I got confused with the order so I'm just letting you know in case you haven't noticed :)
Thanks
I’ll take a look. I thought I had it sorted from oldest to newest.
What's the rates like to move a car or supplies on a landing craft in Alaska? Is there a need for more of them? How you gonna fill that tank up?
Depends on how far they have to travel.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead I just reread my comment and corrected the spelling. I don't know what happened but it was all messed up, stupid phone, lol
I was asking is there a need for more landing craft and what do they charge to move things there, because I'm thinking about moving to Alaska and getting one.
I know the rate is based on distance, but how does it work? How much per mile?
Make that neighbors 🤫
I remember two 1100 gal tanks and now a 2500 gal added to that. It only took three “Like a Glove”s and one “Shot of the Century” to get near its burial spot. Does your neighbors who helped you know they’ll be buying very expensive water from you as in the near future?😂
😂I’m keeping it on the downlow. I have 2 - 550 tanks, and the garden used a lot of water this year. Since the landing craft was coming we figured go big or go home and for the 2500 tank. We shouldn’t ever have water shortages now.
Curious as to the use of the Jeep. Is it big enough to launch and recover the boat.?
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. That’s the thought at least. The main reason we owned the Jeep already, my sons car. We can get more use out of it here than what we could sell it for in town.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead Makes sense. So next video is mounting the winch to the Jeep? Then a video on pulling the plugs and ripping the interior out then turning the hose on it👍 Then a video on shoveling the snow out once the canvas cover is gone. And in 10 to 15 years 🤞 a true Alaskan lawn ornament!
I love Jeeps!
@@outsideinalaskahawaii5987 😂exactly
Is there more land avsilable on or near yer island? I want to.move far away from where I'm.at
None at the moment.

Glad to see you Granny. It was awful nice of home to share my video.
Did your neighbors boat get damaged ? It looked like a little tinker toy getting hit by the titantic. The crash was pretty loud as well. I guess we know what your next project is. While you were pushing that tank up the beach i realised you never said how your mri turned out. I hope everything was fine. God Bless you all and keep you safe.
That’s one tuff boat and it’s been through a lot. Like a Timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
The MRI was what we expected. A few herniated disc with some bone spurs and arthritis. It’s what happens when great adventuress life crosses paths with old age 😂
@@AnAlaskaHomestead Whatever you do, don't let them do a fusion on those disks. I made that mistake twenty years ago and have regretted it ever since.
Sorry about your skiff
What about some type of four wheel drive electric vehicle for certain tasks . If you have a substantial solar system you could recharge it for free and not have to worry about obtaining fuel . of course you will need fuel for some applications like generators and heavy equipment etc.
The Jeep will be driven 1/2 Mike ever two weeks of so. The new electric Jeep is 50k and a good solar set up is 14k. If someone was going to give this stuff to us I wouldn’t turn it down but it’s not cost effective to do electric.
Waiting for a video where you build a floating dock.
When we were talking with the neighbors we were sitting on a floating dock.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead ahh could not tell thought it was just tree stumps. Do you have to still pay insurance and registration with jeep on island?
@@omieyouknowme no, this island doesn’t belong to any town or borough. No roads or utilities it’s just us and Mother Nature. 😂
Lots of Devil's Club there!
There is indeed
That looks like a productive day. I’m sure the jeep will be handy. Probably better for the money than a side-by-side. Are you going to bury the water tank?
It was a productive day. We never landed any halibut though. Can’t say we didn’t try. We will partially burry the tank Probably won’t be until next year though.
How much did he charge you to bring that stuff out? And did you get a discount since he hit the other boat?
I told Mike he should ask for a $100 back. Mike has another outhaul but he need to replace the line on that one and it’s not cheap.
How do you get fuel to your island ?
How do you make a living ? I flew from San Diego to ketckan every summer for a 11 years building 2 cabins on prince of whales island and saw Bigfoot
That’s awesome. We live off of my army retirement and the little we make here on RUclips.
I haven't been to the Island for a while but I would think that a Motor vehicle is rare. I'm Curious why with no roads?
A Jeep Wrangler is just an oversized ATV. It’s going to work out great here. 👍
@@AnAlaskaHomestead Cool! I think there are some roads on the small Island. Undercoat it and rinse it off well after you drive it in the salt water or on the Salty beach.
Keep livin the dream.
@@g.winston will do👍
Great vlog, is the jeep the first vehicle on the island?
I heard there is an old car here from years ago. Never seen it though. So it’s the only running vehicle on the island other than the four wheelers.
How much did the landing craft cost for the day?
It was $1200, we split the cost.
That looks like Shelter Island out of Juneau?
Close 👍
You can cut the lid off that tank and make a public swimming pool out of it...

I would like to start a b&b in Prince Rupert in about 10 years. How much money ya all think i will need?
I think it’s a great idea. I thought about it and would offer fishing and whale watching. To be honest though, although I put out videos, I like my privacy. I’m not sure how much all that would run you.
It’s a TJ...😊
Yeah buddy🤘 97 first year.
SNAFU
How much did the landing-craft-ride cost? And what port did his trip originate from?
$1k
@@AnAlaskaHomestead that is reasonable.
@@jamesbohlman4297 more than I wanted to pay but the only other landing craft was too small it could fit the tractor but without the backhoe. That was $500. So to get the backhoe would have cost another $500. I just went big and brought over a 550 water tank.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead the tender i was on could tie-up to the dock and off-load for cheaper but to put something across the beach is a specialty. So, I suppose planning a freight delivery with neighbors and cramming the landing craft with what it can safely carry every couple of weeks is the answer. If you have a source for information on the homestead program, I would certainly like to look at it.
@@jamesbohlman4297 there is no program. Everyone hauls the majority of their own supplies, food , lumber and fuel. Only larger items that won’t fit into the boat is when we reach out for a landing craft. We have a Facebook page and a island email list. When someone is getting a landing craft they will post about it to see if anyone want to share the cost and have some stuff hauled out.
Wasnit just me that saw that coming? I guess so.
Just hang in with your videos and channel

Where do you get the fuel for the jeep?
same place they get fuel for the chainsaws

What island is this
Near Admiralty
JEEEEEEEP! Yes ! Me Likey JEEEEEEP! More Water? All right ! Now you can really stock up. Now mount the chainsaws to the front bumper and take off into the woods. Just shows you can take the Man out of the ARMY but you cant take the ARMY out of the Man. HOOAH!
Yeah that’s my sons old Jeep we bought in Colorado. He’s been gone 5 years. I thought this would be the best use for it.
How many children do you have ? Your a young man only 58 . Also what do you do for a living? Are you a native of Alaska? Do you have any Daughters? Just want to know if I it is feasible to live this LIFE?
We only have one child and he is grown and married. I’m 51 and retired army. We live off my retirement and trying to make a go at you tube. There is another family here that has two teenage girls. He does whale watching tours in the summer and has other sources of income. My wife is from Juneau and after I retired from the army we moved here to be closer to her family. With Starlink coming to Alaska soon I don’t see why having a remote online job would not be possible. I worked as a miner for a few years two weeks on and two off. Not a great life for a family man but it did pay the bills. Hope that helped

You should NEVER "throw" your anchor.
You MUST always lower your anchor into the water.
Look at the bow of that boat, how are you going to lower that down?
How much did he charge you to bring that stuff out?
It was $650 each.
Should always have a chainsaw strapped to the ATV and Jeep. Downed trees, low hangers, always a reason for the saw’s presence…
I’ll need a holster for that thing. Walk around strapped at all times.😂
You think you’ll be coming up next summer?
@@AnAlaskaHomestead
Still a good chance I’ll be up in September. National guard had told us we could have September off(because of Congress not giving NGB promised funds), lots of us jumped at it and were approved, then they said never mind…. Glad I hadn’t already bought plane tickets….
A holster would be easy to make, either out of HDPE, acrylic sheet, or wood reinforced with resin… and a great winter project for when you’re inside hiding from the weather…. think I saw someone on RUclips make one by heating PVC pipe and sticking it in a hydrolic press with a board stuck in it to make sure it didn’t get too “flat.” I’d probably go with 5mm ply and resin, then covered with leather purely for looks. I may have to do this some day as my second property (on Kosciusko Island) is larger at 4.5 acres and the island has a road system….
