YouTube Policies Are Changing My Content Moving Forward

- Because RUclips likes to strike content that is years old, some of my content will be moving to Patreon. Other content that I want to create, but don't feel comfortable putting on RUclips will go on Patreon.
I am not going to stop creating content on RUclips, but I'll be creating some content that will only live on Patreon so I don't have to worry about RUclips changing their minds and destroying my channel.

We really need a proper alternative to RUclips...
The problem about that is, that isnt really possible, its to expensiv :/
Peertube
Rumble is not bad the ui is horrible and search non existent
Peertube I run one and its clean
There are a million alternatives. None of them are "the one" though.
I have found your content extremely valuable over the years and can attribute large parts of my homelab to your expertise, especially when I was getting started in docker. This video prompted me to open a Patreon account just to support your work. Keep it up!
Wow, thank you!
It's becoming apprant that RUclips isn't the all-in-one platform it used to be and creators really should embrace multiple services like Patreon and Odysee.
Patreon censors and bans content creators as well. Odysee is the best current alternative. It's blockchain based and content cannot be removed.
Thank you for all of your work and best wishes for whichever steps you need to take.
Dude, I've watched almost every video since early covid. I really truly appreciate everything you've done. Times are tough but when things turn around I'll be subscribing to your Patreon!
"Our mission is to give everyone a voice and show them the world.
We believe that everyone deserves to have a voice, and that the world is a better place when we listen, share and build community through our stories." This is the actual RUclips About section
"I don't trust RUclips" This is just so heartbreaking to hear from a content creator.
All your steps are understandable and I hope everything will go as positive as it can.
YT donw let you download your lives in 1080p even.. only 720p.. WTF.. and now pushing ads.. going down hill fast.. in this world we have choices.. and sometimes its best to abandon ship
Just hopped over to Odysee and started following, I'll check patreon too. Love you're content and it's frustrating the way RUclips is policing this way. Especially after all the crazy content they allow from the big dogs as well as the various conflicts of interest they allow. It's like a "Do as I say, not as others do..."
Been watching your videos for years and they've been the motivation behind most of my homelab setup. Unfortunately, I can't afford Patreon but I've created an account just now and followed you there anyway. Thanks again for the knowledge you've shared with us over the years.
Thanks a ton for the support! Really appreciate you following on Patreon. Your kind words mean a lot. 🙌
I personally have benefited a lot from the content that you publish, and you have been for me a very important reference that I always use in the technical field. I hope that you will not be upset and continue posting your content. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you for your comment. I'm going to continue posting content here just as I always have. But I'm going to be focusing extra attention over on Patreon for the foreseeable future.
RUclips hit the firearms focused channels hard with this strategy a year or two ago. a Bunch of creators got hit with strikes claiming that they were "showing unlicensed gunsmithing" and stuff like that.
Amen. I battle with this every day and it's extremely stressful. Thank you for making this video DB Tech. Just subd.
Your content is valuable and I'm glad I can also find you on Odysee. You should promote this platform so more users can join - we really need a YT alternative, and Odysee seems to be next best thing. Too bad that on Odysee there are not so many content creators yet :( maybe if more people spread the word...
When I find content on youtube that is useful to me, I download it. This kind of thing is why.
biggest issue is when they apply new policies and then retroactively apply them to old content that was fine under the old rules. so any content that has educational content is not allowed, because someone can use it illegally...
Thanks for letting us know about how youtube's policies affect content on the platform.
This is terrible, I really hope an alternative to RUclips appears soon...they've really gone downhill!
You've made some really good points and it's frustrating they've just not listened to you!
You don't fit the box that they have designed for you that they won't tell you dimensions for. A badge of honor 😂
This is INSANE! It's crazy how they make people think that these platforms NEED to be a part of your life: (Facebook, IG, Tik Tok, Twitter, etc).
Sadly, RUclips is not a democracy. It's a private platform run by a private business, largely in secret. There are fewer and fewer individual creators who have now been replaced by large organizations running a network of channels. RUclips doesn't have anything to gain by supporting individual content uploaders. They support the big businesses that keep the ad revenue flowing in. The general public does not see a need for an alternative at this time, nor does the site feel threatened by us discussing it.
Thanks for sharing.
Hopefully this turns out to be even better for you in the future. This whole thing is super frustrating
At 8:30 "You can look through the video and see what may be wrong..." That only works if they communicate what exactly their rules are. The biggest problem with RUclips violations is that RUclips does not make their rules clear. Then, when you violate a "rule," they point at the ENTIRE video rather than giving a time-stamp that may help you narrow down the issue. This is all on top of the problem of retroactively applying the rule to old videos. Its like... "Oh, hey, we changed the speed-limit on the highway to 55mph. Here's a video from 3 years ago, when the speed limit was 65mph, of you driving 63mph which is clearly faster than 55mph, so we're going to fine you for that violation." Finally, there's the issue that RUclips does NOT apply their rules in anything even close to a uniform manner. The MSM news can run a story, for example, on RUclips and be monitized, but if a smaller content creator wants to discuss that news, well, suddenly they're violating whatever the rule of the day is.
IMHO if RUclips wants to maintain section 230 immunity, they need to implement a set of content creation rules that are clearly defined that are then fairly and consistently applied across the platform. The way RUclips is doing it now is completely arbitrary and appears to specifically target smaller content creators. To this day there is a particular name of a particular person that if I put it or a derivative in a comment, my comment will completely disappear as if it never existed. There is nowhere on RUclips in which they point out that the name is forbidden -- but there are monitized videos posted by MSM sources that discussed this name quite a bit back in the day.
As many of the comments here say, I will agree with and add my solidarity for you. I will support you on patreon soon, as I want the date of payment to be specific (ocd????) I love your content, delivery and transparency. It sucks to be treated as you have, but I encourage you to not beat yourself up, and continue to trudge this road of happy destiny with us all!
I remember that series. A series like that sent me down a rabbit hole of knowledge and learning. I dove deep into Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, etc. I was just a guy with a broken laptop converted into a home server, with OMV and some containers. Now it's a home data center, and I look forward to entering the Petabyte club early next year. Is Ko-fi as friendly towards you as Patreon? I would like to send a one time donation, but can't use Paypal anymore because I forgot to turn my VPN off and they permabanned me.
a friend of mine, a creator as well, retroactively got a content strike. sucks man. same as yourself, they just took it down. they didnt even tell him what the video was in the email. i had to help him find it, so he can contest it. which we all know it will not work in his favor
Ah, man. I can't afford Patreon. You've taught me a lot about docker. Hopefully once I get a proper job I can go back into time
dang sorry to hear this, youtube has been pretty disappointing these day
Have you thought about uploading to odyssey or float plane?
sounds like the rules shouldn't be retroactive. another options would be put your vids on your own website. and vids on here would be to direct users there? Glad you were able to get around it tho
I wouldn't mind hosting my own content, but I don't have the infrastructure, money, or know-how to do it correctly. For now, I'm going to utilize Patreon for other bits of content and use this platform to encourage people to go over to Patreon to help support me as well as get access to other content that isn't on RUclips.
How can I help you?
So the first strike was about YTDL, and the second about Sonarr, Radarr and Jackett. Hmmm. All of these potentially allow the downloading of RUclips-Videos. So.. Yeah, my bet is that this is an ad-revenue topic for Google and that's why they are blocking that content. Which is pretty shitty, but I never thought much of Google anyway..
I support your move towards Patreon, and as many, I will follow you there. Stupid from Google/youtube ... probably a toxic top management decision as usual ... flexing their muscle/authority on small content creators.
I'd love to see a video about setting up PeerTube! Can it be done on a Pi?
So I did a bit of research. Landed on the Peertube Docker docs:
docs.joinpeertube.org/install/docker
From there, I found a link to the docker-compose used in the installation:
github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/blob/master/support/docker/production/docker-compose.yml
I grabbed the user and project name from the URL, searched for that on hub.docker.com, and found this:
hub.docker.com/r/chocobozzz/peertube/tags
From there, I jumped over to the tags page to find out what releases are available and what CPU architectures are supported.
I was actually surprised that both linux/amd64 (desktop/server CPUs) and linux/arm64 (which is supported on a Pi 4).
@@DBTechYT A series of videos for self-hosting YT alternatives seems like a good way to give YT the virtual finger... just saying.. :)
I think a peertube video will be coming soon. I've got a piece of hardware coming that I think will be great for it
i feel you pain bro.
RUclips us going even more mainstream and corporate. They are trying to make it like Tv and like many others have said, we need something else. Nothing available right now has the pull and appeal to make a difference and that's not great for consumers and creators.
I am being concerned with any google product nowadays. I don't feel safe using their product. I will follow you in Patreon.
I just opened youtube on this account and have a notice "This account has been terminated for multiple copyright claims" I have NEVER uploaded a single video on this account so Im super confused. I never even changed my username it was just a generic account. wth?! Not like I care I don't use this channel for videos but still very strange.
Give us ads here about what's on patreon
I think this is a great idea!!
RUclips has placed you in an impossible position over arbitrary and subjective hypothetical stretches of the imagination. Curious as to what tripped the flag for the strike in the first place.
I'm kind of surprised RUclips creators haven't filed a class action against RUclips for this behaviour. Only way to get them to fix their behaviour is to hit their pocket.
Anywho, any chance your going to start uploading content to PeerTube?
I've apparently tried using peertube in the past, but only uploaded 3 videos. Problem is that the video quality on there seems to be pretty low quality and, if you want to read the text on the screen, low quality makes it really difficult.
Patreon also has a ToS to take into account. I'd simply advice you to spread your net wide(r).
Yeah getting patreon to support and access your historical content
If you use a private platform then it's completely out of your control it's their content once you upload it. You are just working for them they do what they want. People should not expect RUclips to look after them or depend on them for money because it can all disappear at any point you have no control at all.
If Patreon access gives me access to any of your vids that may me useful for future projects I've in mind, then I may consider that route when the time comes.
Your responses to these RUclips actions are entirely justified...cheers.
I've noticed some people recommend content hosts that are haven for extremists; what is your take on that?
Honestly... Mixed feelings on it. I've got an Odysee accound and have had for a while, but it's synched with my RUclips channel, so I don't have to actually do anything to post my content there. I created a Rumble account just to test the waters. I could sync my YT there, too, but I'm not sure I'm going to put that much effort into a site like Rumble just yet.
@@DBTechYT And there is always the possibility Rumble could get taken down by its host Amazon, or Odysee run into trouble with export control laws for homemade guns.
That said, I suspect the reason RUclips didn't give you a warning prior is because the type of takedown could be seen as them wanting to remove content that involves potentially illegal activity. The particular rule is pretty much designed to prevent advertising of software cracks, illegal streaming services, etc.
RUclips community guidelines have to be the best marketing for Patreon
What about exclusive content on Odysee?
I've got my entire library on Odysee. I get around 10 views per video and almost exactly zero engagement there.
I can see how this is frustrating but if it’s in a potential grey area or could be perceived a grey area. Then they bound to play it safe. But I fully agree that we should be consulted before strikes for retrospective videos.
Sorry this happened, please, let us know here in RUclips what are you publishing in Patreon so some of us would jump to see that content. Cheer up!
feels like an abusive relationship
Floatplane?
I've applied twice and haven't heard back yet
@@DBTechYT Aww 😞
Well… someone must have reported the video ! RUclips doesn’t monitor everything on their own, you’re not the first that gets a strike years after . Making videos about content that might be considered illegal for apps like sonnnar, jackcket etc… that promotes possible piracy is always a risk! Same when you uploaded a sponsored video on how to get cheap windows licenses. It’s a grey area, MIGHT as well be careful. Your content is great no doubt just don’t risk it …
We all need.a better platform that RUclips. I don't care for Google policies. Sorry they are messing with you
Punishing for content that were between the past rules due new rules is illegal in the majority of the countries in the world. If it was legal at the time, you can not backtrack. This does not exist in the Rule of Law. This is quite basic. USA does not look like a full democracy, not from their government and not from their own companies. I don't understand why they do that. It's very annoying.
Wow, RUclips is heavily censoring my posts. Peer11Tube & Grey111Jay will (remove the 111s) somewhat help.
Disney have been found out using pirate software for movies like beauty and the beast. RUclips are not striking those trailer though
Rumble
Держись, из России с любовью;-)
hey i get it lol
There needs to be a YT alternative.
So many out there but we're not using them
So true. Pretty much how the Lemmy community is attempting to win over disgruntled Reddit users @@realmadera
Odysee and Rumble... RUclips only exists by using the talents of others without nearly the compensation they'd see other places. All decent creators should just leave and let this dinosaur rot. Staying is just saying "sir, may I have another", they'll never change until the money well dries up. Soon they'll force you into non-compete contracts just to post. Think it won't happen? Give them 10 minutes to get skeevier, it's all they need.
Why don't RUclipsrs just Unionize? I mean, create an Union, demand RUclips (and any other social platform) that asks that union if the new rules they attempt to impose are okay with you and not only the mega companies holding the copyright, or simply ask for new rules that give you the right to demand those big companies that back off. I've not seen one youtuber not complain about youtube's borderline fascist one-sided rules and how they bend to the needs of copyright holders. I mean, those companies hold the money, but you guys are what make youtube what it is by creating non-ending content. Unions work for writers, actors, and any other common workers. Just saying, I'll be glad to see musicians analyze music for more than 5 seconds without complaining about playback time restrictions. The same with movies and series; you have the power to change that. What are you waiting for? I know making videos complaining about youtube is appealing and maybe profitable for now, but how many can you make?
They got a new ai that only now is catching stuff. They should just request you remove the unacceptable content.
You are wearing a cap, that's against RUclips guidelines, plz remove that 😅😢
Shame on RUclips to have retro active rules
I'm becoming more and more disillusioned with youtube. there is a reason creators began moving to Patreon and Twitch years ago. MAKE SURE YOUR MAIN EMAIL IS NOT LINKED TO YOUR CHANNEL, If you lose your channel you lose that email. The trust that youtube loses only gives other platforms a chance to overtake them. If a video violates a new rule it should be taken down without strikes. If you choose to take that same video and re-upload it as a new video then you should get a strike.
I've got multiple email addresses that I keep my assets spread across with multi-factor authentication on all of them for just exactly this reason :)
Why not consider moving to PeerTube?
I've apparently tried using peertube in the past, but only uploaded 3 videos. Problem is that the video quality on there seems to be pretty low quality and, if you want to read the text on the screen, low quality makes it really difficult.
As authoritarian as it is, at least he's getting some compensation from Google for his videos. How much does PeerTube pay again??
@@DBTechYT Mhh that usually depends on instance. On my instance I upload files up to 4K and they works fine. Could be that instance you used had setup transcode to low res to save space.
@@littlepeon the goal of PeerTube is not being platform rather it's open source alternative to host own RUclips like platform. Reduce risk of content being deleted cause company X decide is not ok. I think most of creators moved from sub money to using stuff like Patreon.
I guess I get where you're going with this, @Madiator1022GamingPro, but I would then spend an entire day uploading a copy of my video to even more platforms for, potentially, very little return for the effort. If there was a way to at least semi-automate the process, I might consider it, but to upload it to multiple platforms is pretty time consuming, especially when each platform has a different process.
It is time to move on. Leave it with all of scam, pato channels and ads. Let it burn. Yt have no respect to valuable content, and dont deserve respect from them. This platform has no content by itself, maybe its time to recall those greedy delulus their place.
New ways to stop paying on old videos... Nice
Don't worry maybe it was my mistake for your channel to delete.... I will try to help you and give your money for you
You should only use youtube to drive views to your patreon
Expecting a video teach people how to steal content to not eventually get a violation is a bit absurd. I doubt it is a new rule or policy change "created on a whim" to stick it to DB Tech, but an existing rule that finally made its way around to you. You speak about all these things RUclips can do, but accept no personal responsibility. Would you feel better if you paid RUclips a monthly fee to cover bandwidth and storage? Do I agree with RUclips's decisions? No, but you are cutting off your nose to spite your face.
I am tired of RUclips changing the way content creators post their videos. I am tired of having to pay $17 a month on not having any ads. I agree with @sensemediapictures about finding an alternative.
