Don’t know how you sleep at night with anticipation. Hope you can video the cows going into the barn for the first time. They will probably get a little rowdy in all those shavings. Best wishes on your new venture!
@@geraldsieber7266 We are eagerly looking forward to it and sleep is precious for preparation. I intend to video them going in and hope I don't mess it up. Important stuff coming up!
Will the saw dust just be a base and then you will use straw or corn stalks etc from now on? I think the concept of loose housing is a great cow comfort idea. Every video gets us closer to that day. 🤩🤩
@@mikeklehr7105 Composting works best with fine dry wood shavings. We can add 1/3 rained on, chopped, barley straw or canolla straw if we have it. We have to make sure we cultivate the pack twice per day as well. There is a trick to managing the pack well. Hopefully we get it right!
Great Video today....... The Milk line looks almost completed now and such a nice job too. How many loads of the wood shavings do you need to get started?, and how often will you have to change them?..... trying to picture the flow in the new barn compared to what you have now....... Getting Closer by the day...... excitement building I'm sure.... As Always THANK YOU for sharing your journeys with all of us ........
@@allendavidson6608 Thank you! We originally thought we would need 4 loads but 2 is looking pretty good. We will see once the cows get in there and pack it down. Otherwise we are told we will add shavings every 5 days and go through a truck load every month.
If they get any lung issues it is usually caused by damp stale air. Not by dust which will not be a problem. The fan system will keep the air fresh and healthy.
@@Ron-rs2zlInteresting, no one else presented that as an idea. I don't think it would work. Essentially they will be getting used to it in the new barn one cow at a time.
Ooo, exciting! Can I ask if the wood shavings going out to the fields with the manure affect the nitrogen at all? Do you rake the areas daily to clean up the soiled shavings or will it be like your sheep barn where you clean it out once a year? Where do the shavings come from? We have a furniture factory across the street from us and it seems like a tractor trailer load of shavings goes out twice a week or so! Always wondered where all the shavings go to.
@HollcanaFarm yes I heard the same thing, they also have non motorized brushes, that you put around a pole, not trying to tell you guys what to do, I just think cows really benefit from them. Anyway have a great day. Real nice setup, the new barn, looking good.
@@paulmorak8184 When we did our research this was considered the best consistency for composting. Once the cows get in there the dust will settle down.
@@danielrandolph9170 I haven't seen too many issues of lung problems in cows and I hope we can keep the air quality really good for them. I hope this is the worst the dust will be from now on. I guess we will see.

getting real close

You'll have to start milking 1 cow at a time so the cows get used to the new schedule!😊

Why didn't you get shavings instead of dust that stuff is just like powder is it going to get everything Dusty in your barn
Good for the lungs
