Wow I went to Wavell High School with Delvene & so glad to see she is keeping bees & learning as well. I am currently learning from a fabulous Beekeeper who has about 40 hives here in Geebung Qld. Learning is the most important part before getting a Nuc or Hive. Cheers Denise
Ah.... Ms Delvene. Australia's china doll. Absolutely brilliant video!! What to do with high moisture honey? Mead!!! Or eat it quick, 😄 Thank you for sharing this with us. 🇦🇺 🐝🐝 🍺
OMG. It was so good to see Delvene. She is so stunning. What a beautiful set up. I dream one day of having my own hive. My father had a bee allergy which prevented me from entertaining the thought of keeping bees but since losing him, it is all I think about. I just have to work on the hubby now. What an incredible invention and such peaceful harvesting.
I love that Delvene has so many hives....can you tell me if she bought them all at the same time, or over a period of time? I am referring to the fact that some hives seem to have more honey in them than others.
Usually, an apiary expands over time, with the opportunity to split an existing colony and transfer bees over. Colonies will work at different productive rates bringing in honey, and with a Flow Hive there is the ability to harvest as soon as the honey is ready. There is a good chance Delvene has already harvested before our visit. Heres a video of a split in action, ruclips.net/video/H5JKW01h9UQ/видео.html -Kieran
@@FlowHive Thank you so much for your wonderful explanation..excited about the Flow Hives. Is about 40 years since my hubby and I had bees. Now have 3 excited grown sons wanting a hive each.
I noticed there is a couple of extra holes in the lid at the back that is not normal with the FlowHive. I have the original cedar flowhive and have thought to do the same but on the front side. Reason for this is I thought it would allow easier access to the worker bees and save them some hardship in tackling the queen excluder and navigating the brood box, thoughts? Also, we didn't get any shots of the front of the hives in this video, is there additional holes in the front of the lid? Im guessing the rear holes are for ventilation and the front holes would be for access? I know Fredrick below does similar.... I have only had my swarm caught bees for approx 5 weeks and the brood box if filled with good brood and some waxed honey. The outer frames on each side are still developing from the wax sheet but I thought Id add the flow frames on top to get them underway to start sealing it and using it for Honey Stores for winter. To date no activity in the upper super as yet, just some condensation on the window. Is this normal or will they make their way up when they are ready? Will the holes talked about above assist? Thanks in Advance.... :)
Also, would it hurt to have the hives turned straighter when harvesting (to make room for the jar) and then turn them back again after? as I see she seems to have most of them facing in another direction from the first! Is Delvene following the seasons by pointing the hive towards a particular direction, i.e. North, South etc?
You wont want to move a hive in this way, unless fully suited up. Bees are sensitive to movement and can feel threatened. You can always bring in a bench or use our harvesting shelf brackets that turn the arched caver into a shelf for jars. -Kieran
We are from Cambodia, I would love to have this set at our waterfall nature reserve Flowhive set up..We love that this set up do not interrupt the home of the bees and they look healthy and happy to produce a happy healthy energy honey! What is your email?
No. They need to be closed Cells (cavity is like a cup on its side.) And they fill it with Nectar (Honey.) And when the moisture level is low enough, they Cap it, with Wax ! (Close the end up. ) If it's got to much water content, the Bees fan their Wings to dehydrate it down to below 20% .... Clever or what !Hope this helps. 🤗 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
You turn the Key (Upper Slot) the Wire tension mechanism 'Closes' those Faux Cells up again, (Bees still need to Wax up and Seal those tiny lines between each Channel of stacked Cells.) Until they crank that Key, and the flood gates open again. Open via Lower Slot, Crank,. Take Honey. Add Key to Upper Slot, Crank, Closes it... Repeat, Repeat.... Hope this helps. 😏 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
It stays liquid, with the Heat of the Hive (Bees moving about, the level of Moisture in there.... For a short while. # Here in UK we have Oil Seed Rape # (Canola Oil) that also sets hard. It's lovely, but granulates in a few weeks, (when other Honey types takes Months, sometimes Years ! 😱) Just a case of knowing when it's in Flower, give the Bees a few weeks to collect the Nectar from it ... And Harvesting it quite quickly, doing a moisture test maybe a little higher than normal, allowing for more 'set' later. Hope this helps. 😏 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
