  • Dr. Devdutt Pattanaik is a mythologist, leadership coach and the Chief Belief Officer of the Future Group. Trained in medicine, he worked for 14 years in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry and had brief stint with Ernst and Young as Business Advisor before turning his hobby into a vocation. He has written and lectures extensively on the relevance of myth and mythology and the cultural differences in notions of business and governance. His column Management Mythos in Corporate Dossier of Economic Times has been a reader's favorite for the past 4 years. His expertise lies in Myth Theory based on Mythology, especially Indian Mythology. He calls this Business Sutra. His best seller books include "Jaya: an illustrated retelling of the Mahabharata", and "7 Secrets of Hindu Calendar Art". To know more visit devdutt.com
    Description of the talk:
How the discourse of transforming traditions looks at human beings very cosmetically.....we change superficially but not systemically .....how the 'global' template is actually a 'linear' template that is being imposed on other 'linear cultures' and the Indian cyclical culture....how this is cultural imperialism is institutionalized and so faceless....we do not even realize we are the imperialist....to demonstrate this the talk will show how the internet Avatar and the James Cameroon Avatar have nothing to do with the Hindu concept of Avatar...Vishnu is not Batman!....and yet that is the global assumption where the Indian view, which is the source, is gagged and mocked and comes across as aberration.
    About TEDx:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This is deep & is so true. I've told my daughter before... Every single person is capable of evil if put into certain circumstances; and that people aren't ever just good or just bad. (Although to me I make exception for some people. ex. Hitler, etc.). There were so many things he said in this video and in another one I watched with the same speaker, that I've never considered before. It shed some light on human behavior & how it's effected by cultural/religious beliefs. Thanks for sharing the video's. I enjoy hearing your point of view!!

Really amazing! Patience is the answer to everything and the real journey starts with a question! an answer comes only after a question is raised.. it is really difficult to understand what is right and what is wrong! that's why in almost all the cultures they have asked 'not to judge- anything or anyone' might be because simply we are not knowledgeable enough to understand the truth.. or that you can never define a person as a good guy or a bad guy, as in this journey we are playing different roles, we are sometimes the hero, and we might sometimes become the villains depending on the situation.. so a certain situation defines our status.. and the status is ever-changing.. thats why shiva must have outgrown his hunger, asking others to follow his way of life and stay in peace.. stay still.. and thats why vishnu must be giving priority to other's hunger without asking any returns and outgrown his own hunger and showing the world a new way of living..

the last line "arise with grace and go against gravity" says it all. we need to understand ourselves first, before we can even attempt to understand others. I hard once that 'is accepting responsibility' and I think that all religions and philosophies only talk about being true to oneself and thus getting peace. Once there is peace and a 'samajoyana' there can be no villian to want to fight. As a mediator trainer, I am definitely going to quote Dr. Patnaik just as I quote his sabari story in my training programmes.
I read a story about Gautum Buddha- after his speech every evening, Gautum Buddha used to say that before you go to sleep, you do the usual thing you do. the thief, the prostitute and so on took him at his word and did the last thing they usually did. I think that Dr. Patnaik's story should not fall into the same slot but we have to be courages enough to move from finding the villain outside to finding it within ourselves. uma ramanathan

jivera swarup hoy krishnera nitya das. Sri Krishna is Avatary, the Source of all Avataras. God is omnipresent; as the moon appears differently according to time & place, so Krishna has unlimited Vishnu expansions, known by so many names. All are the Supreme Personality of Godhead. We are godly sparks. Our quality is the same; but, the quantity is different. We are small & God is great. Krishna/Vishnu is everything, personally or energetically. By Hari Nama Sankirtan, the Yuga Dharma, executed as Bhakti yoga we again enter into loving devotional exchanges for the pleasure of Radha Krishna. We reawaken our godly, eternal, knowing blissful self purified of all the conditioning, & illusion of the material world, that bewilders one into a false ego based on our body. Every 7 years our body is replaced by a different body, made of all new cells. We are not the mind or intelligence; but we are spirit-souls of the Spiritual Sky. Ever youthful beings, in natural ecstatic love with all, we enjoy serving the laughter filled pastimes of Krishna & associates always drowning in deeper pools of bliss. This material world is a perverted shadow where we may lord over inferior energies of God that never satisfy. So Krishna or Avatars or pure devotees come to attract us to go back home to Godhead. Hare Krishna

Glories to your seva. God is not a psycho sadist. Radical psychos do not represent Krishna or any other Name of God. Sane theists need to speak up for true relations with the Higher Power & respect the divinity of all life. In ancient Vedic world power, it was a crime to sell food, which was prasadam. Animal slaughter does more harm to the ecology than all petrol fueled modes of transportation combined.

Devdutt is an amazing person and he is a greater thinker and he is rekindling Indian to look backward to our roots and civilization that have medicine and cure for day to day simple life as well as complex corporate life! We been brain washed by British/Westerner for centuries with their understood ideas (just like how brahmins used to do to keep the low caste people down with false interpretations of Vedas and Ithigas so that they can flourish) - so our mind thinking in westerner way! Once up on a time India exported her's Ideas all over the world and still you can see them in the eastern world. If you interpret & understand the vedas/ithigas like Devdutt it will be useful for whole society! At least he is stirring up India's young mind to do more study and research about our own history and philosophies! Most people comments against him here are brahmins or they don't know anything about India and her culture! Also please understand that Vedas and Mahabharath compiled and written by Veda Vyas and Ramayan was written by Valmiki both are Non-brahmins! Both the heros of the epics are also non-brahmins, villain in Ramayan is a brahmin! I think Devdutt is bringing better understanding and glories to our native ideas and want to implements all walks of life including business etc. His doctor education also help him to think differently. I wish him all the best to do for India and her age old culture!

Excellent. But the talk sparks a thought in mind - we recall Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa; who revered as an Avatar, or The Avataravarishthaya; as we regard Him; never fought a war, never showed any magic, never performed any wonder ritual or anything supernatural in the physical world; yet, He is regarded as an Avatar - who showed the path !!

He just meant that the world isn't so simple that it can be divided into just "good" and "evil". The story of the fish meant that sometimes even good intentions can have bad consequences. He also said that we should not assume that our opinion is "right" and the other's is "wrong"

Beautiful discussion by Sir Devdutt, but many people(rigid Hindus) will get offended because of their close mind. We must have open mind. We must see both the parts(good-bad) inside a person and learn from both....

Before you even label it as vacuous please try to understand the context of this lecture and if you REALLY want to understand what he's saying, try reading about the various avatars of Vishnu, the Ramayan and the Mahabharat. From what I have seen on RUclips seems like hating or disliking a video without any logic for the opinion you carry is becoming fashionable these days by some people who love to get themselves noticed.Whether you like or dislike something please care to state a reason for it.

Here Devdutt is missing this point...he is saying that there wasn't the avatar.
Devdutt is a great guy...May god bless him.

The world is not black and white. Its all shades of grey. Learn from the Avatars. Pandavas fought for whats right but then had to pay for their sins of killing people. Rama was the good guy who fought for his kidnapped Ravana was the bad guy who kidnapped someone's wife but then we found out he was actually a good guy who wanted to conquer god. Everytime you think you are right, have a think about the other guy too. The middle way of Buddha!

James Cameron's Film contains within its symbolic Mirror Story references reflective spoken and non spoken examples that touch upon the essence of our ancestral root memory's held internally within the heart roots of the cultural identity's of many of the peoples around our world,, the work it took to do this is no trivial task , when we run the films symbolic elements through the "lens" of our cultural viewpoint filters and memory "relationship" filters "there is something there most can relate in part to" But there is also are shared universal roots as well. least we dive into religious tribalism and pick things apart.
