Bret "Hitman" Hart and the 1-2-3 Kid had one of the greatest matches in WWF / WWE Raw history when they met in the ring in 1994. Bret was feuding with brother Owen Hart at the time and the 1-2-3 Kid felt his stock was lowering as a pro wrestler ever since SummerSlam the previous year. Sean Waltman would earn himself a title shot against Bret and their match would take place on the 11.07.1994 episode of WWF Monday Night Raw, and their match would turn out to be an all-time classic.

I can honestly say that Bret wasn't a guy I appreciated massively as a kid but the older I get, the more I realise just how good he really was. His book is amazing too, for anyone who hasn't read it.

Bret and HBK were my favorites. I'll never forget how torn I felt as a kid watching the Iron Man match. I agree though, I loved Bret but understanding wrestling as an adult, I never realized just how technical he was.

I love how both Macho and JR treated this match like it was a big deal for both men before, during and after. Really helped put the match over.
Macho was pretty damn good on color commentary.
Macho knew exactly how to talk a man lower or higher despite not being a commentator JR is a redneck version of Regis Philbin
@@emperortrevornorton3119 😆Definitely agree about Macho. I thought he added a lot to those commentary teams in the early 90s, whether it was a trio with Heenan and JR or just a two-man team.
It really made it seem very special.
It's still my favorite match of all time, in large part because of the storytelling by JR and Mach, and then the story The Kid and Hart told in the ring, just amazing.
Bret Hart always knew how to make his opponents look good, even in defeat
He always knew it wasn't about if he won or not but if the match was up to his standard that matters. He truly was in a league of his own
I can believe it. The matches he had with Diesel were a good example. Say what you will about the kliq, but it seems Hall, Nash and Waltman had some of their best work against the Hitman. Good stuff

HHH breathed wrestling, Scott had a good mind for it when he was sober, Shawn knew his way in and out of the ring, Nash showed his charisma, and Waltman knew his high-flying style and got his mannerisms to a science in the nWo and DX. They had egos, but they had brains.

Whenever a friend discovers my guilty pleasure in wrestling and pulls the "What the hell?" face. This, this is the match that I show them. Undead graveyard wizards, taxmen and evil barbers can be explained later, but this is the one that explains everything I love about wrestling.

Bret Hart is the master of proving that going over and getting over are not the same thing. Truly the master of in ring psychology and storytelling. This is why he still is and always will be the Excellence of Execution.
He helped Waltman get over for sure. A lot of the old timers of the New Generation really wanted Sean to fulfill his potential, which with how good he was so young you could definitely say didn’t happen. Imagine he got clean when he left WWE and then went on to TNA and worked with a young AJ Styles?

Rumour has it, that this match only came to be, because Vince McMahon was dealing with his trial and not really booking.
Bret is obviously one of the greatest in ring artists of his era.
And Waltman was a great young talent who 'got' the psychology of wrestling. Though he credits Bret greatly for being a teacher.
I believe this because 93 and 95 are so much different from 94 wwf
1994 was a hidden gem year. The year wasn't fantastic but it had some BANGERS for matches
Was Jerry Jarrett booking while Vince was tied up with his trial? I know there’s that rumor that he was to take over booking if Vince went to the slammer. If it wasn’t him then I’d guess it was probably Pat Patterson booking during this time if Vince was preoccupied. I think this would partially explain some of the “high work rate” matches during this timeframe.
@@homedeezyfasheezy5662 Jerry Jarrett may have been involved along with Pat Patterson, Bruce Prichard and Jim Ross. Now if you ask Bruce, he totally buries Jarrett, but the truth is probably less harsh than he is.

After the survivor series issue wwe kinda distanced any association with bret hart they rarely would bring him up

Brets reign was earned he didn't get an instant push outta wrestling school and became a 10 time champion in 4 years his 5 time reign as wwf champion pisses on cenas 16 title reigns

Brets approach to wrestling he made it seem real he made it seem like he's looking to fight you foreal and he spoke on the mic with so much conviction and passion you felt every word

I remember seeing this when it aired. Bret Hart has always been my favorite but I 100% remember feeling that Bret was absolutely heeling it up during this match. Found myself cheering for 1-2-3 and booing Bret, just like the crowd. Bret letting the match continue after the first three count is a legendary move though. This match is a case study in in-ring storytelling.
I watched this as a 10 year old kid on a whim and I got so invested in wrestling during that era I convinced my mom to order survivor series and I think in your house that year.
I was 8 years old, and I got permission this night to stay up and watch the match (usually I had to be in bed much earlier than to see the main event of Raw). My mom even watched it with me and said it was a "good match." Great wrestling memory.

This match happened on my 7th birthday. You wanna talk about in ring psychology watch this match. I still watch this match to this day. Waltman has talked in many interviews thanking Bret for putting him over. Such an awesome match. JR and Macho Man on commentary made you believe kid was gonna pull it off for the WWF title.
I love how you titled this video describing Bret and Sean's match as art. In Bret's A&E Biography, someone said that Bret's approach was like an artist painting a canvas I remember watching this match and I was glued to the set. Despite the commercial interruptions, I didn't want to miss a move. Yes, I remember when Sean arm-dragged Bret. Then Bret had a bit of a surprised look and "OK, back to business." Thanks very much for this presentation.

One of the best matches ever. No silly gimmicks, run ins or shenanigans, just pure wrestling, technical brilliance and respect between the 2. I remember watching it on Raw, live on television and when Randy Savage and Jim Ross gave the 2 of them a standing ovation at the end of the match, it wasn't a surprise.
He was made for 5 star matches wcw lost there way with run ins and non finishes too much nwo.......bishoff didn't no how to evolve
This was some excellent analysis. I loved this match and how professional both guys were from start to finish. This is more of what I wish wrestling could be.
Watching Sean's matches when he was 123 kid reminds me of how good of a wrestler he was and how sad that he stopped evolving during later attitude era, that led to him being a trope namer of X-Pac Heat.
I'm glad he kicked his demons and got out of that rut. He can still pull out the 123 kid of old and fans are starting to remember his career more fondly, which I'm happy for. The 123 chant he got in the Manhattan center during Raw 25 was well deserved.

In a time before more Lucha wrestlers and high flyers from Japan (Besides Jushin Liger, an all time great) got more exposure in the United States, guys like Waltman and Brian Pillman were some of the great high flying wrestlers of that era. And of course, credit due to Hart and his technical ability. One of the few who could make it look like a shoot (Benoit, Malenko, and Kurt Angle on his day are also on that short list). Every technical wrestler afterwards owe themselves to the Hitman.
Waltman is a classic case of "If only he'd stayed a bit more sober", during New Generation he was the legit locker room barometer of whether a newcomer had what it took in the ring to stick around.

There were all classic.
Between this and WM13 you have two of the best matches of their respective shows and they both involve Bret winning the match and still making his opponent look like a million bucks.
I remember watching this match when I was like 6 years old and couldn't believe my two favorite wrestlers were having a match
I remember being 10 and watching this air. Even then I was blown away and realized that this was a real special treat I was seeing for free. Sean Waltman doesn’t get enough credit for how good he was and I know some of that is maybe his own fault but it must be said that the dude could have in-ring chemistry with a broom stick.
Spot on, I was 9 and it was something behold. It's aged beautifully like the rest of Brets work

Wow they have this on Peacock under old raw matches. Cannot believe I’ve never seen this. Me and my 14 year old son just watched it, we were hooked. My son was like, they don’t do stuff like this in the ring anymore.
Some of my favorite matches happened on TV and not PPV. I remember a Raw years ago where Bischoff was fired as GM, and the show had no direction, so it was basically filled with matches. HBK and Jericho had a very long match that was incredible, and it was just some mid-card, TV match. When you have the right performers, the beauty of wrestling really shines. Good performers tell a story in the ring, and this match here is one of those moments. I don't recall having ever seen it before this, so thanks for sharing it.
Bret vs Roddy Piper (WM 8) is another all-time classic nobody talks about.

BRET “THE HITMAN” HART
This match was and still is one of the best recorded events in my memory. It had such a flow and was pure entertainment that had zero animosity or buildup to it. Such a great memorable match.
Bret Hart is such an artist that he doesn't rely on promos to tell a story.
I remember watching this when it happened and being absolutely glued. I thought Bret was going to lose at one point.
Say what you will, no one had the ability to make both guys get over like Bret did. The amount of "I had my best match with Bret" guys there are is actually crazy.

As a kid in '94 123 Kid and Bret Hart, were two of my favorite wrestlers.
I ended rewatching this match about a year ago and I have to agree it's one of the best matches ever.

@@jimbo_1312 Exactly, booking and creative basically just had him betray Kane, steal his first girlfriend like a punk, and then gave him absolutely NOTHING to do except get booed as a lackey who couldn’t win without cheating or help. …And absolutely nothing otherwise creatively besides crotch chopping… Then gave him a weird faction with 2 guys who weren’t over at all, and the weirdest theme music imaginable… It was insane to watch, and it’s nice to see people are finally going back and showing some appreciation for this guy whose contributions and work were huge to the business!!

I watched this live and I remember being pumped as hell!!!you guys remember the classic Raw segments where they would hype the next week's matches? I can still picture them and Vince McMahon's talking. I rooted for the 1-2-3 kid the whole time. Even though I was a huge Bret Hart fan! Classic memories !got to love It!!

It was scripted but probably Bret’s idea 💡 like the ladder match in WWE was Bret’s idea. Like going through at table against Diesel was Bret’s idea (Bret was the first in WWE to go through a table on PPV). It was Bret’s idea for Austin at WM to be busted open and lie there in the Sharpshooter for that iconic finish. Bret is the GOAT of professional wrestling. He has the best combination of character/ look (Sun glasses and black leather jackets), in ring ability (proper technician with the hard hitting Calgary style), in ring psychology, and selling. His weakest point was promos, but he did well at this as a heel. Still over all he is the 🐐
There aren't many matches that deserve their own video, but this was definitely one of them.
The storytelling... the selling... the high-flying stuff... the false finishes... this match had it all. It could have been a Wrestlemania match.
Obviously Bret was going to win, but this match had a "big match feel". It was hyped all night on Raw. And there were moments where you could genuinely think that maybe the upset was going to happen.
It never looked like Bret had to carry the match. Waltman pulled his weight.

That is the best match I’ve ever seen. Saw it on the Hart family dvd wwe put out like 10/15 years ago or whatever and can’t find it anywhere now. Owen and Bulldog put on a clinic in technical wrestling that night.

Age-wise I'm definitely more the kid that grew up during the Attitude Era. But thanks to my dad I mostly watched the New Generation era on VHS, so Bret Hart became my favorite wrestler of all time and he still is.

The genesis of the Attitude Era was done at the hands of Bret vs. Austin in 1997, and sustained by Bret, Shawn, Austin and Taker until it grew into its own thing in 1998.
I am 36 now living in India, grew up watching Bret Hart.. WWF was Bret Hart and WWE is nothing without its roots
truly a classic. 1 of the first raw bouts I was able to watch in 1994... in germany, at the age of 12 (the 1st ppv I was allowed from my parents to watch was wm 10). kotr was also a highlight (with the vs owen-match)
This is one of my favorite matches ever! I remember watching this live with one of my best friends and we were on the edge of our seats watching this one. Amazing, incredible performances from both legends.
Seen a lot of good wrestling in my time, but this one is the holy grail.
Believe it or not, my introduction to Bret Hart and how he became my top 3 favorite ever was.. the first Smackdown vs Raw game. Which is kind of sad & messed how Vince treated him like he never existed, depriving younger fans of a great legend to cherish. When i got to play as him in the game he was awesome to me, loved his theme song, his vibrant retro look, his move set, he screamed old school wrestling to me and I was only like 11, i knew nothing of em before that yet he was all i could talk about to my friends & cousins when I started to look into him, he embodied everything i love about wrestling.

Randy Savage was a mediocre color commentator all told, but his enthusiasm when he's watching a great match is infectious. It actually helps elevate the match. It's the same way for Bret vs. Mr. Perfect at King of the Ring 1993. It makes me think that if Savage just covered Bret Hart matches he might have been the greatest color commentator of all time.

The in-ring work, the crowd being hot the entire time, Jim Ross & Randy Savage being on commentary. Literally one of the best matches in Raw history & one of my favorite matches from the 90s.

One of the greatest examples of Bret Hart being a master of his craft. Bret was an amazing technician, but what made him great was he understood more than how to do some fancy move or sequence. He really knew how to make his opponents look good, even ones that were normally horrible in the ring like Nash. He could make any bum look like a million bucks and he didn't have to say a word to do it.

I've tried to write my feelings, many times, to describe this match, who haven't seen it and I can't. All I can say is watch and learn. When Randy Savage gives this a standing ovation, it's special.
I remember this one as a kid, I know it's just a Monday Night Raw, but back then it was still a new show and every show kinda felt like a main event. Maybe because I was younger and wrestling mad, but it was a great time to watch wrestling. Wrestling wasn't as big as it was in the attitude era, so many people often overlook some classic early-mid 90s matches

I was a huge Hitman fan in ‘94, but actually found myself rooting for The Kid 3/4 of the way through this match because it was that good of a match.
An unexpectedly phenomenal match and I remember it like it were last week’s Raw.
