As some of you know, I left UF's pharmacy program at the end of my first year. I felt that it was important to address it, share my experience and include it on my channel so that I can fully close that chapter of my life. I am so grateful for the experiences I had there, the friends that I made and everything that I learned. Unfortunately in the end it didn't bring me the happiness that I needed in my career. I hope you enjoy it, and please comment if you have any questions for me about my experience!

I’ve been practicing for 8 years as a pharmacist- 6 years of pharmacy school and 1 year of residency. This video is so true- what I learn in school is wasted because I definitely rarely use it in my day to day. I’m more or less a robot. What’s sad is that I’m not even retail- I’m in a specialty hospital program. Good thing you got out early enough- many of my colleagues feel the same way but way too in debt and spent too much time to make a change

I haven't yet seen the video, I am only 30 seconds in, but I had to pause it after reading this comment.
Its sad that you think 'work is work'. We spend over half our life at work after graduation, your job should be something you AT LEAST partially enjoy.
3 years ago I quit my pharmacy profession post-grad, as I found the career extremely dull with very little progression, at least that' how it is here in UK (London, England). 3 years later and its the best decision I made, my Masters MPharm degree secured me a good role in something I actually like which has great pay and a sturdy progression ladder to follow.
I think schools and universities should do a better job of being 'real' with students about the truth of what being a Pharmacist is like, and they should also give a heads up for the future of pharmacy..
edit: if you're a pharmacy student reading this, please dont think your life is over as I am not trying to be negative. Your degree is still extremely powerful and along with a keen attitude this is enough to get you into multiple different Science/Math based professions which pay much more! (basically what im saying is dont drop out of university, finish the degree and then use it to do something better).

Fun should be in and after work...but yes i do understand that money is important so probably 5-10 years ago if you graduated pharm school then potentially it’s still worth it but today and the future, pharmacy is only going downhill and the pharmD degree is no longer worth it mentally or financially if you decide to attend school nowadays 🤷‍♂️

    Hi Olivia!
I’m so sad to hear this was the experience you had- both at the Orlando campus and pharmacy in general. I am a graduating 4th year student at UF Jacksonville Campus that matched for residency at one of my top choices. Patient interactions were also my favorite part and essential for job satisfaction. On 4th year rotations, I really got to see the amazing things pharmacists can do and the amount of patient interactions they can have! I worked at UF Health Jacksonville throughout school, and my position was a patient counseling position so that was the entirety of my job! I wish you would have had a more positive experience like I did! But regardless, I wish you the best in the future and hope you find the fulfillment you are looking for!

Hopefully everything happens for a reason, and I also wish you the best!! Congrats again!

I love your honesty here. I chose my current pharmacy because I needed so much more social interaction and collaboration (it’s a learner based school with lots of activities) and I loved how they were a block program. Follow your heart with what you want to do, no judgement! ❤️❤️❤️ also, the compounding pharmacy I work at used a lot more of their doctorate degree and my friend is an ER pharmacist who gets to collaborate greatly with many doctors. I start pharmacy school at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in 18 days. I've been contemplating about going or not. I'm a pharmacy tech and I have talked to many pharmacists about the outlook on the pharmacy market. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth is projected to be 0% for the next 10 years. I admit the six figure income played a major factor in my decision for pharmacy school, but my pharmacist told me to not expect a six figure income the way the pharmacy market is now. I am leaning towards leaving pharmacy school. My family thinks I'm crazy and stupid to think about leaving because they think that all a pharmacist does is count pills and talk to patients. Financially I personally don't think it is a good decision because I'm estimating I'll coming out with about maybe 150k to 200k of debt maybe after interest. By the way I think your video was awesome, though I haven't made a decision yet, I feel that I am not alone.

Pharmacists are no longer making 6 figures. I'm a new grad and thankfully I have a job, but I'm making less than 95k. And I'm working at one of the major retailers with one of the highest pay at the current moment. All of the new hires received the same offer but we'll probably make less than 90K, sadly. You mention how pharmacies are very understaffed, but that it’s also very hard to find a job. Are they just not hiring more pharmacists when they’re needed? I’m currently a Medical Laboratory Scientist. I am board certified and I have my masters in Immunohematology & biotechnology. The job is very similar to what you describe, except we don’t get paid nearly as much. And we’re not respected by nurses even though we’ve gone through just as much school. The problem with the lab is that most techs are about to retire and there’s not enough new techs coming into the field. Most people don’t even know about the field even though hospitals can’t survive without us. I’ve been considering pharmacy because I would be doing very similar work for a higher pay, I am interested in learning more, and there is not much room for growth in the lab. I can’t decide what I should do.

I would take this as a possible blessing and really look into what it is that you want! For me, four years of school, $250k in debt and the lack of jobs due to over saturation wasn’t worth it... you could switch to PA, that’s two years of school with such a wide scope of possibilities. Dental hygiene pays $45 an hour and is also only two years of school. For me, the possibility of staying In the medical field, having low debt and making almost six figures and NOT go to pharmacy school was 100% the move. Explore what you like, what you can see yourself doing forever and what will make you happiest! You also may want to follow pharmacy pages on Facebook bc there’s a ton of feedback on those that reaffirm my decision to leave daily... Thank you for posting this video and shedding some truth about the current state of the pharmacy world. As someone who went through it all and started out working as a retail pharmacist, your points are spot on. I wish this was discussed more, so that some real change could be made. What a strange degree--such an incredibly rigorous and long journey through school basically learning to become an actual medical doctor and diagnosing like you said--only for most pharmacists to work in retail, where you don't even apply a fraction of what you learn. And what you do need to know can be learned from working as a tech--but not actually taught in school. So backwards. I have never been so miserable as when I worked as a retail pharmacist. No cares about you or if you live or die, you're just a replaceable cog in the machine until the next sucker comes along. I know this sounds morbid but it is just the truth. When death feels like a better option to your current career...get out.

Just a question. Seriously I went to med school but this isolation is what I felt INTENSELY at my Ivy league school for undergrad as well as med school. Med school was actually less intense than my undergrad, if you can actually believe that. Yes financially it's crazy. I did receive so many grants and scholarships that did help, but today my total debt is north of 200k. Yes not 20, but 200. And I can't be a family doc after as the pay is too low that I'd JUST barely get by after graduation to pay off the loans, mind you the loan payback amount is tiered and increases significantly over the years. Here's the worst part, that I am doing an Oncology residency and we get paid about 45k per year and it's grueling hours at the hospital. Any field in medicine, I think you should only get into these fields ONLY if your passion is seriously seriously about self sacrifice and want to help others, and to find a work setting after all is said and done is a challenge in itself as you need to do your homework and carefully research what hospital / setting / area will put more emphasis on medical care , not tipping the balance towards more business focused. I get pushed by drug reps asking me to write for their new releases and I don't think these companies understand but sometimes it really really adds to our daily practice. My opinions. Don't sue me.

Hi there, so I didn't physically experience it, but they talk to us about it pretty early on. From what I heard, no one gets a hospital job without 1-2 years of residency after school, so if you are interested and wanting to do that then yes it's an option! It is just very competitive, so work towards that from day one if that's your plan. Look into your school's placement rates for sure!
I don't mean to depress you with this video, if you are excited and you've worked in pharmacy before and still love it, then you may have a completely different experience than me. Plus I do agree, the horror stories are coming out of retail! Best of luck to you

@@nickjohnson5189 Agreed. A residency is not guaranteed even if you do well in school and have the perfect CV. And even then you may go through another 1-2 years of post-grad residency at minimal pay...only to find yourself unemployed. If anything I'd say that retail is much less saturated than other fields such as clinical and industry etc.

Assalamualaikum sister. I was going to start pharmacy school this fall but I realized that the future looks bleak for the profession. I actually debated with the dean of the school about whether or not the degree is worth it anymore. In the end I decided against it and alhumdullilah I'm happy I did. Im a man so I have to be the bread winner. So I am now pursuing a career will be just as rewarding inshaAllah. My advice to you is if it's your dream then by all means do it. Bit if it is a financial decision then think it over very carefully. Walaikumusalam.

Thanks so much Olivia for sharing your story! I think more personal accounts like these are needed to help students (current or prospective) make decisions about if pharmacy is the best path from them. I am a licensed pharmacist and graduated in 2017 so can resonate with much of what you are saying especially regarding not using much of what you learn in school in actual practice. I will say though, that my outlook on pharmacy differs in that I now work in pharmaceutical industry so no stress from patients/ retail grind. I have great work/life balance and have flexibility to work from home normally and now full time with cover 19. If anyone is looking to get into pharmacy I highly suggest looking into industry while still a student. This branch of pharmacy is booming and the company I work for paid for my relocation fees/ sign on bonus. I think one of the issues is that unfortunately many schools don't really teach their students about non-traditional pharmacy path, pretty much just retail and hospital. Hope this info is helpful to folks, and again thanks for sharing!!

Hi Olivia, I came across your video in a timely manner. Here in my country, The Philippines, schools are offering ladderized program leading to Doctor of Pharmacy, meaning you can receive your BS degree under 4 yrs and you have the decision to work as a Pharmacist if you have passed the licensure exam so you can earn first to support your additional 2 yrs of schooling. I graduated in 2014 (BS Degree) and I am in a situation whether should I pursue the 2 yr program to earn the Dr. title or should I travel more once the pandemic is lifted. Sometimes it's a good feeling to be a drug expert (because there are doctors who truly appreciate our grasp about pharmacology) etc, but on the other side, your mind tells you to save mental energy and rest because the payscale of RPh here isn't that attractive (starting salary of 400USD/month with international pharmacy brands like Watsons).

Video content starts around 3:00 to be honest presentation is pretty scattered.... Did you ever plan to get accepted into pharmacy school to major in drama? The problem is people underestimate the level of sacrifice they will need to make to succeed in pharmacy school. It is a long term investment. You don't make a dollar until you invest 6 figures and 4 years in Pharmacy college.....BTW pharmacy students do earn a Pharm D but consider med students don't become attending physicians until minimum 3 years post grad medical school.....anyways I hope you find a career where you can perfect your skills and develop your.passion...I actually left 2nd year of pharm school on medical leave of absence for foot surgery....I did not go back as I had planned....I'm still evaluating which career to pursue, I like to work for myself or at least have the option but I am also practical so considering becoming a CPA, real estate agent/investor...etc.....watching videos of my class of 2021 graduating brings mixed feelings....every job or career will require sacrifice....it sounds as though your business goals and entrepreneurial spirit would make you more well suited to a career where you could start working for someone else and eventually have the option to work for yourself....as a hygienist you will earn good money but you will never have autonomy....did you ever meet a hygienist in independent practice? I haven't.....they all work under a dentist so please keep this in mind before diving in to being a hygeinist....I honestly think you are not really going to be long term happy in any career where the highest you can rise is being a really well payed employee... you have an entrepreneurial spirit and I believe you would find career happiness in a position where you can eventually be your own boss or at least have equal ownership in a shared venture....🙏✝️🕊

Pharmacy is a great career, there is decline in some areas but huge increase in others. pharmacy is changing and in 20 years there will be so many more jobs and it will be easier on the pharmacist due to automation and AI. There isn’t going to be a professional job, who’s schooling isn’t going to be insanely stressful, and depressing. I know many MDs who hate their job or wish they could’ve done something different, same goes for PA and Law. No Job paying over 100k is going to be sunshine and flowers. If you are looking for something like that, go do something easy, shut up & stop complaining.

Don't take this the wrong way but I think you were right to leave pharmacy but for all of the wrong reasons. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience your P1 year. I can't blame you for not wanting to do a pharmacy fraternity, it's primarily geared towards people who didn't do greek life in undergrad. I hated the undergrad fraternities but absolutely loved my time in Phi Delta Chi. I think you're dead wrong about the money and debt aspect. I was able to save and invest all throughout my years working after graduation and I got up to 500k by the time I was 31. Paid off my debt, no slave to any company, it was great. The right reason to leave pharmacy is the direction this country is heading where pharmacy is treated like a damn mcdonalds. It's tough to be a pharmacist and you need a thick skin. I think you're on the right path right now and I wish you all the best.

    • @LivvInspired

I just don’t agree but that’s okay and we’re all allowed to have our own opinions! Every pharmacist I know is in debt :/ and maybe it didn’t come through enough in the video, but I was very turned off by how retail Pharm is run, the way everyone’s miserable, tired and uncared for by the big corporations- not just fraternities. I’ve said this a few other times- but I read the face book pharmacy pages almost every day as I’m scrolling and I’m just beyond thankful I’m not doing it anymore based on everything everyone says. I think you’re very lucky and did all the right things to prevent debt and being a slave to a company, but for most others, that’s just not the case unfortunately! I wish you the best and I’m glad you found a happy life in pharmacy!

I’m 27 and we’re the same generation for starters 👍🏼 but If you knew me (which you don’t) you would never even consider using the word “hypersensitive” to describe my professional character. Do not come on my channel to attack my work ethic or my opinions on a career in pharmacy before you do some research. New grads are making in the low 60s and hour. That is IF they can find a job. Many cannot. They have $250,000+ of debt. This is before interest. Every senior pharmacist you ask will say that the profession is nothing like it used to be and to run in the other direction. I am reminded DAILY (because I still follow tons of pharmacy news and pages) how thankful I am to have gotten away from this career. This decision has nothing to do with my generation.
